Tiffany Romigh

November 29, 2012 2 Comments

Author bio of Tiffany Romigh:  A writer in Austin, Texas, ELASTICITY is the first novel by Tiffany Romigh.  Previously a Vice President of Edelman Public Relations, the co-owner of fashion and beauty pr agency Mirror Mirror PR, and an award-winning advertising copywriter at agencies including Deutsch, TBWA Chiat/Day, Ogilvy & Mather and J. Walter Thompson, she is currently at work on her second novel and several screenplays.

Interview with Tiffany Romigh

Have you always wanted to be a writer?  I think in one way or another, it’s always been inevitable. People communicate different ways and, for me, it’s the easiest and most effective way for me to get the inside thoughts out. Then, once I realized that it felt like the right thing to do, and no one was throwing sticks and rocks at me after reading what I’d written, I looked for ways to make a living at it.

Tea or coffee?  Here’s my caffeine method: Diet Coke, but usually half a can that I leave in my cup holder on the way to the coffee shop. Then I have an iced coffee while I do the first two hours of writing that morning. Then I get back in the car for a writing location change and drink the second half of the Diet Coke, but I cut myself off after that. Since I write at least five hours a day every single day, the world would be blurry if I didn’t.

How did you come up with the idea for your book, Elasticity?  I became obsessed with the idea of the expansion and contraction of modern life, especially for women. So many of us, especially these days, have trouble finding moderation. We bounce back and forth between extremes trying to find the middle, we push and pull, expand and contract, all the while trying to find the things, the life, the story we can tell that will make us happy. We buy the car, then we lose our jobs and have to sell the car. We eat the things we love and gain weight, then we feel terrible about ourselves and do whatever we can to lose the weight – each of us has our own version. But ultimately, with too many of these expansions and contractions, if we don’t settle down and find our center, we’ll never be happy.

The title directly relates to this and to a passage in the book about the character WHITNEY, a compulsive eater, and her love/hate relationship with her black sweatpants. And, after losing everything important to her she goes on a terrible binge and reaches for those sweatpants, but the waistband has had enough. It has no more elasticity and snaps.

What must a writer have at all times?  An ability to dig deep and write from the inside and not the position of looking at yourself from the ceiling and judging. At least one person in your life to keep you sane. A song to make you smile and one to make you cry. And, the perfect pair of black stilettos, even if they cost a fortune.

Describe what a typical day is like for you:  With small variations, it usually looks like this: get up and write for a few hours to make sure I get started off on the right track, do some family things as a break, switch gears and work on a different project for a few hours, have phone calls with producers to hammer out story points of some of the films we’re working on, try to get one more hour of writing in, and then make dinner. Since I “came up” in the world as an advertising copywriter, I’m used to writing on an 8 to 5 schedule and not just “whenever it hits me.” I’ve found that if I sit down and make myself do it, the words will come. As much as I love it and as much as it’s a personal effort, it’s still a job, too.

Also, at some point, I usually go to Sephora and go bananas and redo my makeup (ahem, try tiny samples in order to make a purchase.) I love my life and feel so incredibly fortunate to have it.

Which other author(s) do you admire?  I admire lots of different writers for lots of different things. Jonathan Franzen for sentences that blow my mind. Melissa Bank for stories that mean something. John Irving for Garp and his use of semi-colons. Gigi Levangie Grazer for reminding me how fun it is to be young and live in Los Angeles. Jenn Garbee for her taste level. Beverly Cleary for getting to it early. And Heather McElhatton for making me laugh out loud.

Hard/paperbacks or eBooks?  Both, but I started running out of room and now buy books on my iPad. I have to say, I do love reading them electronically, and I didn’t think that I would.

What is the writing/editing/publishing process like for you, and which is your favorite?  Hands down, the writing part is my favorite. The other parts are fine, and part of the process, but writing is rad.

What are you reading right now?  I tend to read a LOT, not only because I love it but also because I’m kind of a square and don’t really get out and go wild and crazy. Just finished, in no particular order, In One Person by John Irving, The First Husband by Laura Dave, Domestic Violets by Matthew Norman, and Jennifer Johnson is Sick of Being Single, by Heather McElhatton (see above.) But my favorite-est, wish-I-could-buy-it-again-just-so-I-could-read-it-again-for-the-first-time-est book that I just read based on a recommendation was The Chocolate Money by Ashley Prentice Norton. It is amaaaaaaaazing.

How did you celebrate when Elasticity was published?  Since getting a book published is a total marathon and not a sprint, I celebrated in small ways every time we cleared another hurdle. If the celebrations were all thrown into a bag, and you and I reached in and grabbed a bunch, we would come up with these things among others: many glasses of Prosecco, Chubby Sticks from Clinique, perfect white t-shirts from James Perse, and many, many pedicures.

Do you have any advice for new writers?  Tons of it, but like any advice, take it with a grain of salt (or if you’re like me, far too much salt. I love salt.) Don’t wait to write until you have “something”, just write as you go along because you never know when a few “nothings” link up together and become “somethings.” Think like an agent and imagine selling your own book to a publisher; read the descriptions of shows on the TV guide on your TV because they have to distill what the show is about into one sentence. I’m serious. It helps.  Try not to worry too much about the mythology of writing or being a writer, just sit down and do it – you’ll have plenty of time to wax poetic when you’re on Conan.

Also: call your family, try not to text and drive, don’t be smart aleck-y, finish what you start, and when in doubt say yes.

Can you tell us about any of your upcoming projects?  I’m doing a bunch of scripts for films that I’m really excited about, and get to work with some incredible people on those. In addition, I’ve started putting some things together for my next book, but they’re still pieces of “nothings” in search of a “something” (also see above.) Plus, there’s a film version of Elasticity in the works, so that’ll be fun. I’ll keep you posted!

Book Cover Reveal – FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ

November 27, 2012 9 Comments

I’m very excited to reveal Elke Feuer’s book cover of FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ!

Restoration architect Josie Fagan takes on a project with lawyer and senator’s son, Patrick Pullman. It’s the perfect match. She needs his endorsement to save her business and he wants to restore his ancestral Chicago home. Love wasn’t part of her plan. Neither was being asked to stay at his home, haunted by ghosts, or discovering she has a claim to his home – which she adores. When she finds out his family may be responsible for her aunt’s disappearance fifty years ago, it’s a race to unearth the truth before she loses not only her business and her heart, but her life.

Patrick can’t deny his attraction to Josie and is willing to take a chance on love since his broken engagement a year earlier. Things become complicated when he learns of their family connection and her claim to the home he loves. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, or that his family is involved in her aunt’s disappearance, so insists they work together. But, when he starts seeing his uncle’s ghost, and threats are made on her life, he’s forced to confront the possibility his family could be responsible.

The ghosts of their aunt and uncle forge a connection through them, but is what they feel love or just the ghosts living out their unfinished lives?

**About the author, Elke Feuer:

Elke was born and raised on Grand Cayman where she lives with her husband and two wonderful kids. To her surprise, she enjoys writing romantic suspense, and even more surprising, writing about serial killers. She also writes historical, time travel and contemporary stories to even out her dark side.

Elke’s joy is reading, spending time with my family, traveling, and meeting people. Writing is her passion. She doesn’t have pets, but adores puppies and fluffy kittens, but doesn’t everyone?

Jennifer Brown-Thomas

November 26, 2012 Leave a Comment

About Jennifer:  Smart, ambitious, and never willing to accept no for an answer. It’s what defines rising writer-director star Jennifer Brown-Thomas, and her drive is definitely paying off.

At just 25 years old, the book author and movie director phenom has her first novel, Blissful Lies, published, topping charts and on sale nationwide on e-books and at Barnes & Noble stores.

Certain to see her star shine all the way to Hollywood, Brown-Thomas’ talents were on display at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where she presented Blissful Lies the movie to arousing ovations. YTINIFNI Pictures, the widely acclaimed movie distribution company, noticed the artistic value in her work, and is now working on deals to bring the film to the big screen and television sets around the globe.

However, Blissful Lies is merely the start of the Brown-Thomas empire. The hard-working writer-director is also in the process of writing her second manuscript, Vindictive Grounds, which will also become a published novel.

And, she doesn’t stop there. Brown-Thomas has also partnered with fashionista and Runway Ready owner, Fanitsa Limberis, to form Limberis Brown Thomas Enterprises (LBT). Together, LBT plans to create a fragrance line, clothing line, coffee shop and more.

Often referred to by her friends and family as “Super Woman,” Brown-Thomas can really do it all — and, with a humble attitude – a trait she learned from Teenia Brown, her mom and manager.

Growing up an only child, Brown-Thomas found it easy to dream big with the unyielding support of those near and dear to her. Always on a mission to exceed expectations, she graduated a year early from High School, participated in many sports, and volunteered for youth organizations in the area. Now an alumna of Texas Christian University, she is enjoying post-graduate life as an author and director, wife and mother.

“I always knew she was driven, but I see now that when Jennifer sets her mind on something there’s just no stopping her. From the minute she sat down with her laptop to write the screenplay, I knew it was the start of something huge,” said Teenia.

Chapter 1 tease of “Blissful Lies”

It was a typical star-studded Los Angeles night; the streets were consumed with the bright lights of aspiring talent, major celebrities and an overall abundance of indulgent taste amongst the people walking in and out of some of the most luxurious restaurants and shops in town. It was typical, however, for everyone except Addison Hamilton. Tonight was a celebration and the night she would publicly accept the great honor of being named the first woman Chancellor of the ivy-league educational institution, Brown-Thomas University, a goal she strived to achieve for most of her adult life.

At the age of forty-five Addison was not only successful and brilliant; she was stunningly beautiful, a pillar of her community, hardworking, talented and confidant. She was the kind of person every woman would fail to live up to, and every man would fail to conquer. She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Spencer Hamilton, just out of college. Together they shared one flawless son, Parker. As the limousine pulled up to the grand ballroom and the driver opened her door, she gracefully stepped out and paused for a moment before walking in. She couldn’t help but think that every dream she ever had for herself, at this moment, had officially been realized. She entered the ballroom to find herself surrounded by over five hundred people waiting to welcome her into her most recent accomplishment. As she walked in, every guest leapt to their feet and a thunderous applause imploded the four walls of the ballroom. This was it… the perfect night to accompany her picture perfect existence.

After a short meet and greet, everyone was asked to take their seats as Dr. Jim Crawford approached the podium. “It’s been a long journey for our University, to find the next person who will honor and cherish the value of our institution, as we all do, and hold its future in the highest regard. But we found her.” The crowd began applauding again with an astounding amount of support.

“With that said I would like to introduce the new Chancellor of Brown-Thomas University, Dr. Addison Hamilton.” Addison emerged from her table of family and friends and approached the stage.

“Thank you, Dr. Crawford, and thank each and every one of you for being here with me tonight. It is an overwhelmingly incredible honor to be named the next Chancellor of Brown-Thomas University and one I do not take lightly. From this point forward I will strive to instill in all of our prospective and current students, the true value of an education.” She paused for an instant as she noticed her husband eagerly excusing himself from the table to answer a phone call. She wondered, at that moment, what was more important than she was? With the crowd waiting, she continued, “I will dedicate myself entirely to the continued prosperity of Brown-Thomas University as well as its faculty, staff and students. So I’d like to thank all of you again for the opportunity to serve my community, my students and my Alma Mater, Brown-Thomas University. Thank you.” She eloquently waved to the crowd and excused herself from the stage, focusing solely on returning to her table to address her husband’s brief disappearance.

As she sat down to rejoin her group, Spencer kissed her on the cheek. It was obvious to her that something was amiss. After all, they had been married for close to twenty-five years and she thought she knew him better than anyone else.  “So? How was I?” She asked with a gleaming sense of attitude, knowing he had missed part of her speech while taking his phone call. “You were amazing honey, we are so proud of you.” He smiled charmingly.  “So then what the hell was so important it couldn’t wait Spencer?” She asked with that Addison Hamilton force and attitude that made grown men instantly long for their mothers.

“The office called, I have to be in Boston tonight.” He recited with absolutely no remorse for excluding himself from her important evening.

“Spencer!” she exclaimed with disgust.

“I’m sorry Addison, but this is business. It is not negotiable.” An awkward silence consumed the table as Kate stepped up to break the ice. “Hey, um, Kinsley and I are going to do some serious retail therapy tomorrow. Come with us.”

Addison set her napkin on the table as she responded, “Thanks girls, but I have a lot of work to do tomorrow.” She paused momentarily as she glared at Spencer, “If you’ll excuse me, this is a very significant night for me and I have guests to greet.” She angrily excused herself from the table leaving Parker, Kate and their best friends, Jackson, Kinsley and Leighton sitting to witness this monstrosity of what started out to be such a promising evening.

Parker sat in shock of hearing his dads’ holier-than-thou attitude, “Dad?”

“Parker, do not start with me. I can’t help it. I have business to attend to and I refuse to apologize for doing my job.”

Book Cover Reveal – PIE GIRLS

November 19, 2012 6 Comments

Today, I’m proud to reveal Lauren Clark’s book cover of PIE GIRLS!

Princess, Southern belle, and spoiled-rotten social climber Searcy Roberts swore on a stack of Bibles she’d never return to her hometown in Alabama. After eloping with her high school sweetheart and moving to Atlanta, Searcy embraces big city life Carrie Bradshaw-style. But now, Searcy has a teeny, tiny problem:  Her husband’s had a mid-life crisis. He’s quit his job, cancelled her platinum American Express, and run off with the “new” love of his life. Searcy finds herself back in Alabama with no job, no money, no husband, and no plan. After a frigid welcome home, she finds out that life in the small town Deep South is much harder at 36 than it ever was at sixteen. When she’s forced to take over her mother’s fledgling business, Searcy deals with sullen employees, strange ingredients, and the business owner next door who’s made it his mission to make her life miserable. Will ‘Pie Girls’ be an epic failure, or will Searcy find the courage to persevere?

**About the Author, Lauren Clark:

She has been a voracious reader since the age of four and would rather be stranded at the library than on a desert island. In her former life, she worked as an anchor and producer for CBS affiliates in Upstate New York and Alabama. Lauren adores her family, yoga, her new Electra bike, and flavored coffee. Random Sunday Ramblings

November 18, 2012 2 Comments

Happy Sunday, y’all!  I not supposed to be working on the weekends, but I wanted to share a few random thoughts with you.  In a way, I guess it’s just me venting because I’m a little stressed about the holidays coming up.  Speaking of holidays, why is everyone putting up their Christmas tree this weekend?  It’s not even Thanksgiving!

Anyway, back to my rambling…

I got up to write this post to avoid watching the Cowboy game.  I could no longer watch a train wreck, nor could I stand to listen to the announcers bash a team I grew up with.  I grew up and live in Dallas, so the Cowboys will always be my home team, but there comes a point where I just shake my head, wondering how much more of this we can take.  Cowboys Stadium (a.k.a Jerry’s World) is huge, so we should have a great team, right?  Oh, that’s right because we all live in Jerry’s World, which consists of being obsessed by the unreliable and unqualified quarterback, Tony Romo.  Speaking of Romo, why is it that everyone (even some announcers) think he’s so good and talented, and that the real problem is not having enough or good protection?  Well, Tony can’t throw good, and when he makes a great pass, it’s usually to another player — on a different team!  Just today, I heard that he’s thrown more interceptions than any other active QB in the NFL.  Not surprising!  But back to Jerry, the owner of the team…he needs to fire himself from being the GM of the team and bring someone in to help bring this organization back to what it was when Jimmy Johnson was coach!  And people wonder why I’m a Green Bay Packer fan…GO PACK, GO!  Oh, did I mention that I own that team?
Like I’ve mentioned before, and that I’m still so excited about, I have a new office!  Tomorrow will be my second full week to actually get up to go to work.  I’m loving it!  Another blog post will be up tomorrow about how it’s changed my productivity, but for now, here are a few positives and negatives about not working during the weekend:

Positives

  • More free time to spend with my family and friends
  • More time to spend on household duties, mainly laundry and dishes
  • Giving myself a well-deserved break
  • Finding new hobbies and TV shows, (like Dr. Who, for example!)  **Thank you to my awesome hubby for introducing me to this great show, and to Netflix who provides hours upon hours of great episodes!
  • The peace and quite
  • Not drinking as much the night before, so that I can be productive the following day!  (Okay, this might seem like a negative, but it’s not)

Negatives

  • Waking up early
  • Not being able to wear my pajamas all day
  • Deciding what to wear!  I’m not a clothes lover and HATE shopping!
  • I miss my writing companion — my cat
  • Not drinking as much the night before!  I guess I should start drinking more SmartWater!  Hmm, that might just be a New Year’s resolution!
  • The peace and quiet — sometimes quiet, is a little too quiet!

Okay, I guess that’s enough rambling for today!  Thanks for letting me vent…

Oh, and here are the final scores:  20-23, Cowboys won!  (Maybe Jason Garret, the head coach, is pleading to keep his job!)  Also, the Packers won, with a final score of 24-20!

Elke Feuer

November 12, 2012 9 Comments

Bio of the Author:  Elke lives in Grand Cayman with her husband and two kids. She loves to spend time with her family, travel, and write. She stumbled into writing suspense, and to her surprise found she enjoyed it, along with writing about serial killers. Elke’s fascinated by them, and what motivates them to kill.

Just recently, Elke Feuer was thrilled and honored to find out I’m the only published Caymanian romance author. It’s such a great opportunity to help other writers on island.

INTERVIEW

Welcome back, Elke! What have you been up to since your first appearance?  I had another baby, edited For the Love of Jazz and started another book, Deadly Bloodlines.

Your book, FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ, has been picked up by Crimson Romance (Congratulations!), how did you find out that you’d officially be an author?  An email in my inbox from Crimson saying they’d be happy to have my story.

How did you react, and who was the first person you told?  I went in the bedroom and jumped up and down. I couldn’t shout because my daughter was sleeping. My in-laws were visiting at the time. It was about two weeks after I had my daughter. My husband and mother/father in-law were the first to hear the news.

Did you celebrate?  If so, how?  My best friend, Katie, treated me to lunch. She was also the person who encouraged me to submit while I was pregnant. I planned to put off submitting for another year.

At this point in your career as an author, what do you think has helped you the most?  To keep believing in myself and don’t be deterred by rejection letters.

Now that you’re a mom of two, how has it changed your like?  I have a lot less time to write than I used to. Thankfully, my daughter is an amazing sleeper, so I do get some writing time.

Some authors find reviews important, do you?  From what I’ve seen and learned so far, yes. It appears most readers want to know that someone enjoyed the book before they buy it. On amazon it gets you in a higher ranking, so there are definitely perks to getting reviews.

In one word, how does it feel to say you’re an author?  Fantastic!

What has been your favorite part this far in the publishing process?  Meeting new people, especially the crimsonistas (other Crimson authors).

Do you have any plans on marketing your book, and if so, how?  Yes, but there’s not enough room on your blog. LOL. I didn’t realize how many options they are to marketing your book and I plan to take advantage of as many as possible. I’ve done guest interviews, like this one, and guest posts. I’m in the middle of a blog hop and plan to do a couple more before and after the book is released. I’m currently trying to schedule a virtual book tour, a release party and on and on…

Without giving us any spoilers, what is your favorite part in FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ?  Hmm, that a tough one. Since I have to choose I’d have to say when Josie, the heroine, meets Patrick, the hero, parents. Sparks fly.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects?  My next book is called Deadly Bloodlines. I’m excited because it set in Cayman where I live. Here’s a sample blurb:

Angel Mason is the daughter of a serial killer who tries to redeem the sins of her mother by becoming a forensic officer. She returns to Cayman, running from a love she can’t possess.

On the twentieth anniversary of her mother’s capture, someone is murdered in the same manner as her mother’s victims. She is forced to work with the man she ran from and face the terrifying truth she’s been hiding for twenty years.
