One of the many reasons I created Chick Lit Goddess is because I’m truly in love with the Chick Lit genre. From Emily Giffin’s first book, Something Borrowed, I was hooked and didn’t bother looking back. I loved it then because the characters seemed relatable, even if I was ten years younger than the characters, and it helped me realize that at no matter what age a person is, there will always be relationship issues with our Prince. Today’s no different, I still love it for the same reason.
Last year I read 30 books and 27 of them were Chick Lit, so right now I’m wanting to spice things up a notch — okay, maybe a little more than just a notch. I’m talking about reading erotica. When I read my first erotica novel by Megan Hart, I was very young (much younger than the average woman who reads them), I fell in lust. Not only did Megan’s book, “Dirty,” make me blush and wonder if I’d ever have that kind of life, it was the writing that I was fascinated by. How did this author write like this? Was it from memory of only minutes/hours/days ago, or did all this creativity come strictly by way of imagination? Could I write like that? I was a “good girl” (click HERE to see what I mean) at this time and had only kissed a few boys, so from Megan’s very detailed descriptions, I let my imagination run wild. It was also a good thing that I was also addicted to soap operas, so I made sure to pay close attention to the intimate scenes. I began to write. Yes, I’m saying that I wrote erotica way before I learned about Chick Lit.
Anyway, moving on…
I want to be a published author more than anything, and I understand that doing so takes time. Fine, I get that, but for some reason, erotica is killing me. (Though I’m sure that since I’m reading “Midnight Secrets” by Wendy Ely has sparked some of my imagination). I’m busy right now with edits of books one and two, reading books for blog tours, writing book three, jotting down notes for book four, so is there time to write a/an (short) erotica? No. Will I attempt to start this erotica book idea I have had with me for a very long time? Yes, beginning this weekend! Erotica! Just the word itself is sexy. While out to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant, I told my husband that I was considering writing erotica. Of course, he was very supportive.
For some reason, I find it easier to write an erotic sex scenes than dialogue or conflict. I’m not saying that by any means it has everything that a published author might have, but I’d like to, at the very least, think that I’m not too far off. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but since I’m very devoted and faithful to the Chick Lit genre, I don’t want to confuse my readers or followers of Chick Lit Goddess. This is why when I write erotica, I will use a pseudonym.
**Just a note, I do not want my erotica books to be like “50 Shades of Grey.” I didn’t think it was as nearly as erotic as anything Megan writes. (To see my review of “50 Shades of Grey,” and how it compares to anything by Ms. Hart, click HERE).
You go get’ em Isabella! I think it’s great you want to explore that side of writing. XOXO
Thanks so much, Jen! 🙂
Go you! I love Megan Hart’s stories and writing. I didn’t realize she wrote erotic at first (she writes other stuff too), so imagine my surprise!
I would definately use another name. Have fun with it and good luck!
I know! I didn’t realize it either until today! Thanks for commenting!
Writing sex scenes is just too much fun! I love doing it, but for me, the relationship still has to trump the sex. It’s a fine line, I know, and it’s a line that many think I have crossed. I guess we’ll see what the reviewers of Streetwalker think.
You go, girl! I think we have to write what calls to us, and I must admit I haven’t read a lot of erotica, but I think I’m going to start. 🙂

I write erotica… and it’s not as easy as it sounds. I’d recommend “The Joy of Writing Sex” by Elizabeth Benedict as a ‘primer’ of how to make A, B, C, and D all fit together sensually and erotically!
Hey! It’s funny you mention that book because I just refound it in my library! I’ve pulled it out and can’t wait to look through it. Thanks for the recommendation! 🙂
Isabella, I’m glad you’re giving erotica a try. I agree with kdaddy23, The Joy of Writing Sex is a great resource. Keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks for stopping my, Mimi! Like I said in the above comment, I just refound “The Joy of Writing Sex” and I’m eager to look through it. Thanks for stopping by, pretty lady! 🙂
Writing erotica is pretty easy but it doesn’t pay well at all (unless you wrote Fifty Shades of Grey). I have written erotica but I think I prefer books more where the sexual tension builds and does not explode until the end. Lots of bonking doesn’t really do it for me!
The best paying erotic publisher was Black Lace but they are no longer in business. I guess when they started they were very unique ‘erotica written for women by women’ but then the market got flooded. I wrote Lured by Lust by Tania Picarda for them about a nympho in an art gallery!
It’s cool that you want to write erotica. I’ve only read two books in the genre so far, but I like it. Will you use a pen name? Some authors are scared their families, neighbors, co-workers will find out. If I wrote erotica, I’d shout it from the roof tops 🙂
My first erotica book review was Rea Thomas’s “Stolen Nights.”
Keep smiling,
Yawatta
Thanks! I’m really looking forward to it and the story is coming along nicely. I will be using a pen name, but only because Isabella is already my Chick Lit pen name. I have no plans ever to write under my real name.
I’ve been meaning to comment on this post, but I kept putting it off. I’ve dabbled in the erotic fiction, mostly short stories that I’ve posted to a site that I have a nom de plume. Clearly. It’s a lot of fun to step out of a comfort zone and write something deliciously naughty. The only downside to it has been that when I try to write a basic, non explicit love scene, I start mixing up the two genres and wanting to add way more. There is a fine line between too much and just right.
But have at it. There is a great sight online to post anything erotic. email me if you want me to send you the link. And I’ll have to check out that A, B, C book. Sounds good.
Okay, there’s my 2 cents worth. 🙂
