50 Shades of Grey

Would I Write Erotica?

January 23, 2013 16 Comments

SnoopySexyOne of the many reasons I created Chick Lit Goddess is because I’m truly in love with the Chick Lit genre.  From Emily Giffin’s first book, Something Borrowed, I was hooked and didn’t bother looking back.  I loved it then because the characters seemed relatable, even if I was ten years younger than the characters, and it helped me realize that at no matter what age a person is, there will always be relationship issues with our Prince.  Today’s no different, I still love it for the same reason.

Last year I read 30 books and 27 of them were Chick Lit, so right now I’m wanting to spice things up a notch — okay, maybe a little more than just a notch.  I’m talking about reading erotica.  When I read my first erotica novel by Megan Hart, I was very young (much younger than the average woman who reads them), I fell in lust.  Not only did Megan’s book, “Dirty,” make me blush and wonder if I’d ever have that kind of life, it was the writing that I was fascinated by.  How did this author write like this?  Was it from memory of only minutes/hours/days ago, or did all this creativity come strictly by way of imagination?  Could I write like that?  I was a “good  girl” (click HERE to see what I mean) at this time and had only kissed a few boys, so from Megan’s very detailed descriptions, I let my imagination run wild.  It was also a good thing that I was also addicted to soap operas, so I made sure to pay close attention to the intimate scenes.  I began to write.  Yes, I’m saying that I wrote erotica way before I learned about Chick Lit.

Anyway, moving on…

I want to be a published author more than anything, and I understand that doing so takes time.  Fine, I get that, but for some reason, erotica is killing me.  (Though I’m sure that since I’m reading “Midnight Secrets” by Wendy Ely has sparked some of my imagination).  I’m busy right now with edits of books one and two, reading books for blog tours, writing book three, jotting down notes for book four, so is there time to write a/an (short) erotica?  No.  Will I attempt to start this erotica book idea I have had with me for a very long time?  Yes, beginning this weekend!  Erotica!  Just the word itself is sexy.  While out to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant, I told my husband that I was considering writing erotica.  Of course, he was very supportive.

For some reason, I find it easier to write an erotic sex scenes than dialogue or conflict.  I’m not saying that by any means it has everything that a published author might have, but I’d like to, at the very least, think that I’m not too far off.  I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but since I’m very devoted and faithful to the Chick Lit  genre, I don’t want to confuse my readers or followers of Chick Lit Goddess.  This is why when I write erotica, I will use a pseudonym.

**Just a note, I do not want my erotica books to be like “50 Shades of Grey.”  I didn’t think it was as nearly as erotic as anything Megan writes.  (To see my review of “50 Shades of Grey,” and how it compares to anything by Ms. Hart, click HERE).

50 Shades of Grey

June 13, 2012 5 Comments

As promised, here is my review of “50 Shades of Grey,” by E. L. James.

Out of curiosity and wanting to see what all the hype was about, I began this book in April.  Just this past Saturday, I finally finished it — WHEW!

Getting through the first 150 pages was so hard, which was one reason why it took so long to finish.  E.L. James has admitted that she’s not a good writer and I agree with her!  While not only is she not a good writer, neither did she have a good editor.  The editor could have done a better job, making the writing stronger, especially for such a popular book.  Isn’t that an editor’s job?

While the storyline was good, with very enjoyable characters, dominate Christian Grey and submissive, Anastasia Steele, I expected more from the so-called “mommy porn.”  In Megan Hart’s books, the sex scenes had me blushing, but as I was reading “50 Shades,” I kept rolling my eyes.  I’ve even written stuff more sexual!  The sex scenes were laughable, but I see why so many are rushing out to buy this book.  James has stated in multiple interviews that this book is written on her fantasies and I can see why; she’s a married mom of two.  This book is for moms who have traded whips and handcuffs for bottles and bibs.  As a married woman without children, I was more swept away with Christian’s dominance than with the sex.  It was Christian who had my toes curling, along with his mysterious ways…Damn, he’s a sexy Hero!

There is talk about “50 Shades” being a movie which I would be interested in, especially if they get my imagination of Christian right.  (Who do you recommend playing him?)

While I do plan on reading the other books, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, I’m really in no hurry to start them.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars, based on the characters and plot, not the writing or the sex scenes.

How Important Is the Writing?

April 29, 2012 8 Comments

You’ve been recommended a “great,” “sexy,” “fun,” “alluring” book! Awesome, you think!  You buy the book, you find a comfy place in your home, and then open the book.

Well, when you’re not even 50 pages into it and you’re enjoying the story, but you’ve noticed or even questioned a few things — this means that it’s not written correctly, not did they have a good editor!

I started the book “Fifty Shades of Grey,” (don’t forget about its trilogy: HERE), a few days ago on my iPad, and then I bought a copy for my hubby, (which I’ll be writing about his outlook on it once he’s finished with it).  Before he stated I saw a few mistakes, and while I’m not an expert, but I think that a lot of people who are reading the book and giving great reviews don’t care about the writing.  One my husband read the first chapter, he said that he wanted to “take a red pen to it!”  I don’t blame him.  This leads me to today’s blog post!

HOW IMPORTANT TO YOU IS GOOD WRITING VS. A GOOD BOOK WITHOUT GOOD WRITING?

Since I’m now working with editors, I’ve started to think like them — Why think this, Why say this, and Does this make sense?  When I was younger, I didn’t pay much attention to grammar or thoughts, but since I’ve grown, it’s all that I pay attention to when I read!  For fun, I’m reading “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the book that everyone is talking about (yes, I might be wanting a thrill).  I’m sixty-five pages into it, and I’ve been wanting to take a red pen to it myself, like my hubby!  Oh, my gosh!  If I didn’t have to have read six (yes, 6) chapters before anything happens, then I wouldn’t care so much, because action would be happening.  I’ve even considered not finishing this book!  With exceptional reviews, is it just about the book?  Probably so!  If the writing was graded, I bet it’d get a 1 out of 5 stars, (read my review for “Fifty Shades of Grey” that will be coming soon)!

My question to you is do you prefer books written with bad writing and the story is good, or do you get through it and read a book because of its storyline?
