“Royal Secrets” by Kathleen Irene Paterka

Book Description:

ROYAL SECRETS is the story of the Royal Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, and of Lily Lavender, whose family is distantly descended from the British royal family. Immersed in the regal world of weddings and romance, Lily grew up believing in brides, grooms and happily-ever-afters. It seemed her destiny and royal birthright to someday assume a position as wedding coordinator in their family-owned wedding chapel business. But when her mother Mimi’s third marriage eventually fails, Lily’s dreams of her own happily-ever-after quickly fade. She’s no longer interested in a life of assisting brides walk down the aisle into a life of disillusionment and possible divorce. Lily turns her back on The Royal Wedding Chapel and leaves Las Vegas to fashion a life of her own. Years later, Lily—now a single mom—discovers her teenage daughter has run off to Las Vegas, lured by Mimi to help run the chapel. Determined to save her daughter from the broken dreams of Sin City and the nonsensical world of which family fairy tales are made, Lily returns to Las Vegas. But nothing prepares Lily for the royal drama which awaits her… or the sins and secrets she stumbles across that threaten to close the chapel and ruin her family forever.

My Review:

I have been a huge fan of Kathleen ever since I read “Fatty Patty” (such a great book), so I was eager to start “Royal Secrets”. Being a huge fan of the Royal Family, I really enjoyed this book, and even the references to Kate. There were a lot of twists and turns, which made for a page-turner. While the beginning seemed a little slow and there were parts that seemed to drag on a bit, it definitely picked up in the middle. I was constantly wondering what would happen next.

I thought the characters were written really well, but my favorite was Tori. She was mature and smart, and I liked how she challenged her mother. My main issue with this book was Lilly’s character. From the beginning, she seemed really upset with her mother for having a stroke. It like she was put out for having to take care of her. I also thought Lilly needed to step in take over for Tori, who seemed to take better care of Mimi.

Kathleen’s writing was witty and fun! Like I mentioned above, this wasn’t my first book by her, and I know it won’t be my last!

I give “Royal Secrets” 4 stars!

INTERVIEW

Describe yourself in five sentences: I’m a published author, with five women’s fiction novels and one non-fiction work available both digitally and in print. I’m wife to Steve (33 years and counting), a mother to our daughter Abby (31 yrs.), and grandmother of 3 yr. old twin boys. I have a day job I love as resident staff writer at a fairy tale castle in Northern Michigan. I’m in love with my husband, devoted to my family, loyal to my friends, and happy in what I do. Most of all, I love my life and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

When did you begin writing? I started scribbling stories down as soon as I could hold a pencil and string words together. Growing up, I thought everyone was like me ~ living with a stream of stories and ideas, and people chattering away in their heads. Little did I know that ‘normal people’ weren’t necessarily like that. But I’ve always loved making up things. Nowadays, I get paid to put that imagination to good use.

How do you come up with the titles of your books? My first novel, FATTY PATTY, is about an elementary school teacher named Patty who’s struggling to lose weight. I was a fat teenager (I weighed 300 lbs. when I graduated from high school) and they called me ‘Baby Huey’ on the playground. That got me thinking, “What would Patty’s nickname be?” Thus, the name (and title) FATTY PATTY was born. My latest novel, ROYAL SECRETS, is about a Las Vegas wedding chapel (the Royal Wedding Chapel) owned by a family of women who are distantly related to the British royal family. The novel contains plenty of intrigue and drama, plus plenty of secrets! Seemed like a no-brainer. Royalty + Secrets = ROYAL SECRETS.

Walk us through your writing/editing/publishing process: I love writing the rough draft. It’s my favorite part of the entire process. By the time I begin, I’ve been dreaming about the characters for a good six months. I know where the story begins and where it will end. For me, the fun part is discovering the story magic in the middle. I’m a very slow writer. My current work in progress is due to my editor next March. By the time it arrives in her In-Box, I’ll already have a cover design back from my graphic artist, plus a formatting time-slot booked. From start to finish, the entire process takes about eighteen months.

Do you get writer’s block? If so, how do you overcome it? I’ve never had writer’s block, and it’s something I prefer not to think about, thank you very much! Perhaps I’m afraid I’ll jinx myself? However, I did quit writing once, for several years. My younger sister (my only sibling ~ a 37 yr. old single mom with five young children) had just been diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. I was four chapters into a new novel, but I just couldn’t concentrate. After a few weeks, I made the decision to quit writing and concentrate solely on my family. My sister died nine months after being diagnosed. Looking back, I’m so glad I made the decision to put my writing aside for that time in my life. I have no regrets. I believe that being there for her when she needed me, helping out with my nieces and nephews, making memories that will last forever, strengthened me as a person, as a woman, and as a writer. It took a good three years following her death before I finally picked my writing up again. But when I did, it was with a renewed determination, and I vowed to never quit again. Life is too short not to follow your dreams.

Are any of your characters based on someone you know? Each of my heroes contains certain core elements of my husband Steve’s personality. He’s such a wonderful man and the most positive person I’ve ever met in my life. How could I not help being influenced by him when it comes to creating the perfect guy? The only male character Steve complained about (and disliked) was Sam Curtis, the overweight hero in FATTY PATTY. At the time I wrote the novel, Steve had been struggling to lose a few pounds. He didn’t like being compared to Sam. (Interesting side note: women readers adored Sam! But I say, “Too bad, ladies… he’s taken!”)

Where is your favorite writing location? I have a home office. The walls are red, my desk is a beautiful antique rubbed walnut, and my computer monitor is the largest I could find that would fit on my desk. My eyes aren’t the greatest and I need that visibility on the screen!

If you’re not working, then you’re probably…Watching episodes of HBO’s THE NEWSROOM (with Jeff Daniels). It’s my favorite show on television ~ the new season begins this month! I’m psyched! I also love going to the movies with Steve, or losing myself in a good book. TV, movies, books… can you tell I love escaping reality?

What is your favorite word? Perseverance.

What would you be if you weren’t a writer? A talk show hostess! (not that I believe for one minute that any network would hire me- LOL). But I love interviewing people, finding out about their lives and discovering why they do the things they do. People are so interesting. The situations some of them find themselves in make for wonderful stories!

What is the best advice you’ve been given? Never give up. That applies to everything in life, whether it’s writing, marriage, children, or anything. Work at it long enough and you will succeed (or, at least, things will improve). A person cannot survive without hope. Hope is the thing that keeps us going. I try every day to fill my life with hope.

Can you tell us about any of your upcoming projects? I’m three chapters into a new work of women’s fiction. The story evolved from a horrible event I experienced in my life a few years ago. My husband had been hospitalized for a heart condition. Early one morning I was sitting by his bed and woke with a start to the oddest noise. Little did I know that it was the infamous ‘death rattle’. My Steve had just taken his last breath. Thank God he was in the cardiac unit. A skilled team of doctors and nurses rushed to his side with a crash cart and zapped him back to life. But that experience got me to thinking. What if Steve hadn’t been in the hospital? What if we’d been home and asleep in bed? He would have died. One thought led to another, resulting in my current work in progress, a women’s fiction story I callELEANOR (for want of a better title). It’s the story of a woman who wakes from a sound sleep by a curious sound coming from her husband of 38 years next to her in bed. Then she goes back to sleep… only to waken the next morning to find him dead beside her. A shocking secret he’s been keeping is exposed upon his death, destroying the idyllic life they’d built together, leaving a stunned Eleanor alone to figure out how in the world to begin putting her life back together.

My novel ROYAL SECRETS was released on July 1, 2013. It’s the story of the Royal Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, and of Lily Lavender, whose family is distantly descended from the British royal family.

Book review of “Between Friends”

BetweenFriends

“Between Friends” by Amanda Cowen

Book Description:

The only way to have a friend is to be one…especially between the sheets…

When neurotically challenged and unlucky in love Megan Daniels is propositioned by her life-long friend Ben Romano with a coin toss (heads, they sleep together, tails, they don’t) the night before they are about to attend a destination wedding, she drunkenly accepts his challenge. But when Megan wakes up the next morning with a bad hang-over and Ben in her bed, she is more than mortified. It isn’t until the tropical heat begins to ignite emotions Megan never believed or thought she could possibly have, when she starts to question if risking their friendship is the answer to finding true love.

A cute and contemporary debut novel, BETWEEN FRIENDS faces one girl’s struggle between the fine lines of friendship and love and the risk of opening up her heart to the possibility of forever.

My Review:

When I picked this book up, it reminded me of one of my favorite movies, “When Harry Met Sally,” where we all wonder if men and women can truly be friends. The subject highly interests me, because I did marry a guy who I, for years, considered to be a friend, so I was eager to read this book.

I found Megan and Ben’s story in “Between Friends” to be a cute, likable one. Would I ever participated in the coin toss, probably not, but that’s what I liked about their friendship — they were willing take a chance (even after having a few drinks), even Megan who tended to over think and worry.

During the weekend of friendly wedding festivities, I thought their alone time was special, and it seemed like they really cared for each other, especially when nobody was looking. I liked how Ben seemed to take charge, even though he had a temper at times, and punched a guy, it was understandable to see where he was coming from. However, I thought Megan’s girlfriends were very immature, and weren’t supportive, especially when a secret is found out a secret about one of the them girls and Ben…(no, I’m not going to spoil it for you).

Overall, “Between Friends” was a fun, and enjoyable, weekend read. While, at times, somewhat predictable, I loved the happy ending!

I give this book 4 stars!

GUEST POST

Writing New Adult Contemporary with Mature Content

Sex, sex and more sex? Isn’t that what’s it all about? Not really, but it sure does keep things spicy.

Although writing New Adult Contemporary Novels with Mature Content gives the author the ability to heighten their story between the sheets, trust me, it is so much more than that. Having a protagonist in the 18 -25 age bracket opens up a whole new world for a writer, and allows their characters to tackle all those coming of age issues such as, breaking out into the job market, starting college, weddings and engagements, and living away from home for the first time etc. And along with those many things that plague us in early adulthood, it is also our sexuality and figuring out who we are, when it is at its peak.

As an author who writes in this genre, New Adult Contemporary Fiction is able to capture life and it’s not so pretty moments when it comes to love, sex and relationships. I love the whole “coming of age” bit and being able to incorporate mature content into my writing. For me, it is just a perk to share my characters intimate moments through sexual encounters to help develop their chemistry.

Finding Lucas

Book review of “Finding Lucas”

FindingLucasCover

“Finding Lucas” by Samantha Stroh Bailey

Book Description:

Can you ever really go back to the past?

After five long years of living with Derek, her former bad-boy-turned-metrosexual boyfriend, Jamie Ross finally reaches her breaking point. She’s had enough of his sneering disdain for her second hand wardrobe, unusual family and low-paying job as the associate producer of Chicago’s sleaziest daytime talk show. When her new boss plans a segment on reuniting lost loves, Jamie remembers Lucas, her first love and the boy she’d lost ten years earlier. Spurred on by her gang of quirky friends, Jamie goes on a hilarious, disastrous and life changing hunt to track Lucas down. But are some loves best left behind?

My Review:

“Finding Lucas” has been on my TBR list for quite a while, so between reading reviews for Chick Lit Plus Blog Tours, I decided to start the book I’ve heard so much about.

I love how the book started out where we get a clear image of Jamie and Derek’s relationship. (Wow, what a jerk, and his mother…what a witch!) Once Jamie ended it (thank goodness), a sigh of relief rushed over me, thankful that she was finally free from both of them. It seemed that Jamie was already on her way out before the reader met them, which explained why she didn’t really miss him, especially since she was with him for so long.

When Jamie begins to be friends with her new boss, Andrew, while working together on the show of finding lost loves, I liked their friendly and, sometimes, flirty banter. I was focused more on her journey of finding Lucas, and wondered why she didn’t tell him about being on the show herself, but at the end, I’m so glad she didn’t. (No, I’m not going to spoil it for you). One thing I really liked, and appreciated, was the friendship Jamie has with her family. I was laughing when Andrew met her mother and her partner, and her sister. That was hysterical. I could only imagine being a fly on the wall when her mother’s partner gives him a back massage. While the loving family is filled with quite a gene pool, it was obvious how much they all care for each other.

Jamie’s journey of finding Lucas is quite a funny one and I couldn’t put it down, even though I was reading two other books along with this one. I laughed and cried, but the best part was the ending. I was surprised how it ended, but that’s what I liked the most of “Finding Lucas.” It is interesting to wonder what happened to our long-lost loves, and when we see them, hoping to get another chance, we all wonder what we’ll do and say in that moment. Why I won’t say if Jamie found Lucas, I do think she ended up with the right man. 🙂

I would recommend this book to anyone who wonders what happened to or wonders where their long-lost love is, and it would make for a wonderful book for a day at the beach. This was my first book by Samantha Stroh Bailey, and I know it won’t be my last!

I give “Finding Lucas” 5 stars!

Tales from the Laundry Pile

Book review of “Tales from the Laundry Pile”

TalesFromTheLaundryPileCoverPic

“Tales from the Laundry Pile” by Kathleen Kole

Book Description:

Claire Jamieson has moved back home to Boxwood Hills… And, she’s not alone. Trailing behind her overworked laundry basket is her husband and their energetic twin boys.

Claire had always thought that once she’d left the nest, she’d never return. Now that she has, she’s wondering what type of bird that makes her… Cuckoo?

When she has a moment to pause and catch her breath, she’ll let you know.

Tales from the Laundry Pile, an engaging, thoughtful story of motherhood, family tangles, new friendships and self-discovery.

The Boxwood Hills novels take place in the same picturesque mountain town, they have been written to stand alone; each story one in a set of many. That being said, don’t be surprised to see characters you recognize from other books within each other’s tale. They love to make cameos. Welcome to Boxwood Hills!

My Review:

Ever since I read “Favorable Conditions” (click HERE to read my review), I’ve been a huge fan of Kathleen Kole, so I was eager to read “Tales from the Laundry Pile”.

This book was easy to get into, as action started right away, thanks to Claire’s four-year-old twin boys who find trouble.  It made me get a glimpse of what was to come, giving us a peek into her the overworked and tired mother’s life.  At the beginning, Claire seemed like a good mother, I thought she was a little too lenient (I wouldn’t let my kids go outside in a new town without watching them), but as the book goes on, I wanted to tell her to chill and relax, and let her know that if one of her boys falls down, it’s going to be okay.  I liked the scene near the end when she overhears her sons telling a friend how they consider her a “scared mommy.”  That really hit home for her and I think she took it to heart.  However, I found it a little unbelievable when she decided to change, a talk with a friend and a stop at the salon was going to change anything.  While she might have loved her boys, she kept apologizing for them when they weren’t doing anything wrong, but I really think she was apologizing for her insecurities about being a perfect mother.  One thing I wished we could’ve seen was Clair putting them to bed, showing us her maternal side.

I liked Claire’s husband, Jake, and thought he made for a good husband and father.  I would’ve liked to have seen more into their marriage because it seems like they were roommates, not lovers.

As for Jessica, Claire’s friend, I really couldn’t read her.  I was a little curious as to why she kept questioning Claire about Jake before meeting him.  It kind of made me wonder if she and Jake were having an affair or had been lovers.

Overall, “Tales from the Laundry Pile” was a good and quick weekend read.  I’m not a mother, so I can’t relate, but I would recommend this book for any mom who is stressed, overworked, and is constantly doing laundry.  Though this book wasn’t my favorite from her, Kathleen Kole is a wonderful writer and gifted writer, and I look forward to reading more from her.

I give this book 3 stars.

**GUEST POST**

Writing… the back and forth, the to-and-fro, the roundabouts.  My journey.

Writing isn’t a straight forward journey.  Any writer will agree with that, I’m sure, and I can attest to the fact that my own experiences have been on a path that has meandered.

I began my journey in my early twenties commissioned straight out of College to, believe it or not, write a book!  I was hired to write a book that would be a part of a larger series and the irony was, at that point, I wasn’t aspiring to be a novelist of any sort.  Funny how life works.

Once I’d completed that job I moved on into the world of freelance writing; at that point, much more my speed.  I wrote for numerous newspapers, chasing down stories, interviewing all sorts of people and generally have a grand old time developing my writing chops.  Nothing will train you to meet a deadline like knowing a paper is going to print and you MUST have your story ready; nor teach you to write within the confines of a certain number of words because that’s the space you must fill.  Never a dull moment, I loved every minute of it.

So, why didn’t I stay in that freelancing world?  One word: Family.  I met and married my amazing husband and a year and a half after that, our beautiful son was born.  When he arrived in our lives, I felt I had a choice to make: Juggle writing and motherhood, or set my keyboard aside and give my focus to my growing family.  I chose the latter.  I allowed myself the time to fully embrace my young family without guilt or feeling pulled into too many directions and I am so thankful I did.  I knew the time would fly by (it did, that “new baby” will turn sixteen years old this summer) and I didn’t want to miss it.

And that brings us speedily to the past two years!  In that time, I have written and published four novels.  Each one of my books has had the good fortune to be revealed to the reading public by going on tour with Samantha at Chick Lit Plus.  (Shameless plug I know, but it truly warms my heart to have been working with Samantha during my entire publishing journey.  She’s a fabulous person to have in your corner.)

This year has seen my books embraced by readers in the UK and my very first novel, Breaking Even, even went bestseller on UK Amazon for two months!  Admittedly, I was gobsmacked and again I feel I must say, funny how life works.  You never know what’s around the next corner.

And, finally, in the “around the next corner” mode, I am working speedily on my fifth novel (yes, new characters to meet in Boxwood Hills…) to be published in the fall.  Story details and cover reveal to come.  I just keep on rolling.

Alright, that’s enough about me!

I’d like to shift gears and extend a huge thank you to you, Isabella, for inviting me to share a piece of my history with you and your followers.  And an extra thank you for being willing to be a part of the tour for Tales from the Laundry Pile.

Gotta go fold some sheets….

Hugs.

“Meltdown” by Tara Thompson

Book Description:

NYSSA, internationally renown supermodel, is accustomed to turning heads. As a young girl, her flawless face attracted the wrong kind of attention. She escaped an abusive father and successfully navigated life’s seedy underbelly to become a runway renegade, although not without leaving her share of enemies behind. Lately she’s caught the eye of….

Will he be able to turn things around, or is he too embroiled in his political sex scandal? His good friend and business partner….

DEMETRI, sexy hedge fund manager, is at the top of his professional game and tries to save his friend from near financial ruin. Yet he’s distracted by Steve’s new girlfriend, who just happens to be Demetri’s old flame. Years ago, Nyssa ran from him and he’s never forgotten her. But why is he still interested? Demetri’s dating….

Although she bets big on Wall Street, the largest casino in the world, nothing is more risky than giving her heart away.

In this fun, juicy, glamorous novel, no one is exactly who they appear to be…

And all of them are heading for a MELTDOWN.

My Review:

I really enjoyed “Meltdown” by Tara Thompson.  The story picked up immediately and I thought it was really well written, and appreciated how I got a clear view into each of the characters’ lives.  I liked all the characters in different ways, but Aislinn was by far my favorite female from the beginning.  As for my favorite male character, I loved Demetri.  His mysteriousness and forcefulness reminded me of a softer Christian Grey and I didn’t mind it.

While there were a bit more characters than I typically like on one read, I liked how the book few by without me getting them too confused.

If you’re looking for a quick summer read, with a little mystery, I highly recommend “Meltdown!”

I give this book 4 stars!

**About author, Tara Thompson:  I am a married thirty-something with three awesome kids and a sweet, workaholic husband.  We had two dogs but about the time I was feeling completely overwhelmed, they abandoned my chaotic house for doggie heaven (for their sakes, I hope no children are chasing them anymore).  In my former life I attended Washington University in St. Louis and Columbia Business School in New York, and worked on Wall Street and Main Street before giving up on both.  I thoroughly enjoyed my twenties and am quite content settling down to a much quieter life in Suburbia, USA.  For me, writing is a much welcome respite from the reality of running to the bus stop, pediatrician, food store, gym, soccer games, tennis lessons, etc. etc etc.  My family and I recently moved from Garden City, Long Island to Wilton, Connecticut and couldn’t be happier.

Meeting Miss Mollie

Book review of “Meeting Miss Mollie”

MeetingMissMollieBookCover

“Meeting Miss Mollie” by Di Jones

Book Description:

She’s the Agony Aunt who has it all. Except for one small problem – her life is a disaster.

Annabelle is a hard nosed writer with a good marriage, a nice flat, a thriving career at Adorn magazine and a busy social life. She has only one ambition – to be the best known Agony Aunt in the UK.

When her world is turned upside down by her husband’s infidelity she strikes out on her own and goes flatting with a jet setting businessman. But things in her new house aren’t quite what they seem and her problems mount.

Through her ups and downs, Annabelle forges a relationship with the strangest of friends and discovers the best things in life are those she always avoided.

Meeting Miss Mollie is a story about lies, loss, loyalty, love and laughter, and will appeal to anyone who loves chicklit or romantic comedy. You’ll laugh as you read this book, and perhaps even shed a tear.

This is the second novel by author Di Jones, whose first novel Transplanting Holly Oakwood has been in the Top Ten in romantic comedy. If you enjoy Jill Mansell or Sophie Kinsella, Di is a new author you must read.

My Review:

“Meeting Miss Mollie” started off quickly and I became am enjoyable read.  I liked the main character, Annabelle, and liked her even more when she stood up for herself to her cheating husband, James, who I didn’t like anyway.  When she has her first run in with a dog, there was something mysterious about it, and I liked how we find out who the dog really is — so cute!  Once Molly’s identity is revealed I noticed instant spark between her and her new flatmate, Christian.  As far as his girlfriend, Marlena, I thought she was a witch, and I loved how Annabelle’s living with Christian got to her.

One thing I didn’t like was how easy it was for James to slide his way back into Annabelle’s life.  I thought she was finished with him, then she winds up in bed with him…that kind of set me wrong and I wondered what she was thinking.

Overall, I was really pleased with “Meeting Miss Molly” and thought it was written well.  I even cried a bit.  While it didn’t have me turning pages as quickly as Di’s other book, Transplanting Holly Oakwood, this was still a book I’d recommend, especially if you’re a dog lover.

DiJonesPic**About Di Jones:  I was born in Liverpool, England to parents who had a strong sense of adventure and moved many times.  I’ve lived in Canada, the United States, England and New Zealand.  I’ve worked in a variety of jobs ranging from envelope stuffer to bakery assistant, librarian to trade development executive, but none of my jobs were as much fun as the one that allowed me to write and get paid for it.  That was a few years ago, and each year it’s become more and more apparent what I want to do is write full time, a dream that first occurred to me at seventeen.

I write chick lit – light hearted and humorous stories for and about women who value their families, their friendships, their careers, their independence, who have a sense of adventure, and who live and love with passion.

Like my characters, I love my family and friends, beautiful shoes, anything sparkly, the ‘occasional’ drink, parties, and a good belly laugh.  I’m addicted to shopping, chocolate, bubble bath and anything else that smells nice, and the sort of tv programmes you’d never publicly admit to watching.

I live in a lovingly renovated home overlooking Auckland’s beautiful Waitemata Harbour, with my trusted friends Bronson Boxer and Dolce Dane.  They keep me fit and exercised, scare the burglars away, sit loyally by my side throughout my late night writing sessions, and hang on my every word when I read final drafts aloud.  They truly are my biggest fans, and I theirs!

I love my life, but not so much that there’s not room to live a load of other lives, through the hearts and minds of my characters, all of whom I adore, and some of whom I’m fortunate enough to call friend.

“Where’s the Groom” by Sophie Meyer

Book Description:

Ashley, just turning thirty, is stuck with a string of bad dates that keep getting worse. The last of her group of friends to be single, she’s quickly becoming hopeless about finding The One.

When a friend convinces her to attend a new-age workshop on making your dreams come true, she gets onto a roller coaster she can’t get off of. The poignant and hilarious comedy of errors begins. The workshop sweeps through her life like a tornado and turns her reality upside down. She is told: visualize it, and he will come. But Ashley takes it seriously, and before she knows it, she’s planning a wedding. There’s only one problem: there’s no groom.

Things quickly spiral out of control as one misunderstanding after another occurs, and Ashley’s friends and family find out a wedding is happening, and want to know who the groom is. Backed into a corner, she finds herself having to lie, and to make her wedding planning more and more a reality. Things intensify as Ashley chooses her bridesmaids and is caught in a whirlwind of looking for dresses, choosing a venue, finding a band, and everything else. Soon a date is set, invitations are sent out, and there is no backing out!

In the meantime, Ashley is desperately dating, hoping for The One to show up in time! In a shocking ending with a twist, Ashley draws true love into her life in the most unexpected way.

My Review:

When I started this “Where’s the Groom” I found it hard to stop, mainly because of the main character, Ashley.  I was curious as to where her adventure of planning a wedding without having a groom would take her.

While I liked the idea of the story, I wasn’t really convinced that Ashley really wanted any of it, and thought Ray, her friend and yoga instructor, was pushing her to do it to avoid his own issues, so I didn’t understand why she began the process in the first place.  Part of me was hoping she’d stand up for herself before anything got too far out of hand and people questioned her, but that didn’t happen.  Another thing I didn’t get was why Ashley didn’t think to get a ring before it was brought up to her.  Isn’t one of the most important parts of a wedding, especially for a woman?

The author, Sophie Meyer, wrote a really cute and enjoyable read, and I really liked this book.  The writing was good, which made for a quick and fun read, but like I said, I just wasn’t convinced enough that Ashley wanted to find someone to marry.

I give this book 3 1/2 stars!

Book review of “Market Street”

“Market Street” by Anita Hughes

Book Description:

From Anita Hughes, author of Monarch Beach, comes Market Street, a delicious story of a department store heiress, her messy marriage, and her passion for food

Cassie Blake seems to lead a charmed life as the heiress to Fenton’s, San Francisco’s most exclusive department store. But when she discovers her husband, Aidan, a handsome UC Berkeley professor, has had an affair with a student, she flees to the comfort of her best friend Alexis’s Presidio Heights mansion, where she wonders if she should give their marriage one more chance.

Whether or not she can forgive Aidan is not the only choice Cassie has to make. Cassie’s mother is eager to have her oversee the opening of Fenton’s new Food Emporium, which Fenton’s hopes will become San Francisco’s hottest gourmet shopping destination. Cassie’s true passion has always been food, not fashion, and Cassie suspects her mother might be trying to lure her into the Fenton’s fold by entrusting her with such an exciting opportunity. And then there is James, the architect designing the Emporium, who is quietly falling in love with her…

**THIS FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS**

My Review:

Still reeling with joy after reading “Monarch Beach” by Anita Hughes, her debut novel, I was asked to read and review “Market Street.”  As a huge fan of the author I accepted the offer and was given an early NetGalley copy.

“Market Street” began as an easy read, with action starting right away.  I wanted to know if Cassie would take the job at the emporium, but found myself more curious if she would take her cheating husband.  The way he cheated, their relationship and the way he seemed to act as is he hadn’t done anything wrong, piqued my interest.  While there was a bit of name and brand dropping, I understood it because that’s what defined the characters were and what I expected from the book.  Up until the end of the first quarter, my attention was held.

I liked how Cassie’s friend, Alexis, allow her to stay with her, but it seemed like she overstayed her welcome, and not just because Alexis’s husband was away on business, (and I often wondered if he was cheating like Aidan).  Cassie is a thirty-two year old woman, but staying with her friend for as long as she did kind of threw me off.  I also didn’t understand their dialogue.  One would say something, then the other would say something completely random, but maybe that was the way the characters have always talked with each other.  In the end, I felt that Alexis took over the part of the main character.  I also found it odd that she’s the one who took it upon herself to shut the chapter on Cassie and Aidan’s marriage by sending him a box of lingerie.

I tried to like Cassie’s character — I really did, but there were times that I was so over her.  She seemed to run away from her issues, especially her husband’s infidelity and not face the issues.  I wanted her to make up her mind, was she in the marriage or was she out of it?  At times I felt sorry for Aidan (the cheater) because Cassie seemed to care too much about her emporium (which I’m glad she took a stand and did for herself) and what her mother thinks to work on and fight for her marriage.  Often, Cassie was daydreaming about wanting to be watching a movie or wrapped up in Aidan’s arms in their bed, which annoyed me because if she really wanted to, she could.  As for Aidan, I didn’t like him.  He was very arrogant, but maybe he was supposed to be that way.

At the end I though, I liked how Cassie appeared to be more grown-up and adjusts her priorities, making her relationship with James at the top of the list.  I just wonder why she didn’t do this with her marriage, and it would have been nice to for the reader to “see” some kind of closure between Cassie and Aidan.

While I anticipated “Market Street” to be another brilliant read by Anita Hughes, I thought it was only okay.  I found there to be a little too much name dropping of designers that I just didn’t care about, which seemed like page fillers.  And while I have stayed at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach (which is mentioned) and understand high-class society, I didn’t care about what Cassie, Alexis, Aidan or James wore.  What interested me more was the story, not what they were modeling.

I recommend “Market Street” to anyone who is into fashion or a fan of Anita Hughes because she’s a brilliant writer who creates memorable and delightful stories, but this book just wasn’t on that resonated with me.

I give this book 3 stars!

Book review of “Somewhere Between Black and White”

“Somewhere Between Black and White” by Shelly Hickman

Book Description:

Romance, humor, family drama, with a touch of Buddhism. Sound interesting?

When approaching life’s problems, Sophie sees in black and white. That is, when they’re someone else’s problems. So when it comes to her sister, Sophie is sure she has all the answers, and offers them without hesitation. If only her sister would listen.

Then, through a series of chance encounters, she meets Sam, who is witty, kind, and downright unflappable. Sophie has the overwhelming sense that she’s known him before, and as a relationship builds between them, odd visions invade her mind. Though she tries to dismiss them, their persistence will not allow it.

As someone who is quick to judge others, she is intrigued by Sam’s ability to accept people as they are. She begins to see him as a role model, but try as she may, his accepting nature is difficult to emulate.

Will Sophie ever be able to put her hasty judgments aside and realize not every problem has a simple solution?

My Review:

I was excited to start “Somewhere Between Black and White” because I wanted to read Sophie and Sam’s story.  Quickly, I began to really enjoy this book and like the characters, especially the relationship Sophie has with her sister, Evie.  When Evie’s situation seems black and white to Sophie, it’s not for her and wishes her sister would see that things aren’t always that way…

And then Sophie meets and gets to know Sam, someone she’s convinced that she’s known from a previous life.

I found Sam’s charm in this book to be adorable.  As a teacher coworker of Sophie’s, he has a way of expressing things, not only to his students, but to her as well.  Through intellectual conversations and passionate kisses, Sam opens her world, showing her that things don’t always have to be black and white, there can be a shade of grey, too.

I seemed confused by the flashbacks.  I didn’t think they were understandable enough for the reader.  But, I did like how Evie’s husband’s picture was what Sophie saw, as I think it brought them closer after what happened, (sorry, NO SPOILERS).  Also, while I loved the sweet ending, I think it came too fast.  I wanted to see them struggle more as a couple, and I want to know they can get through anything and stay together.

If you’re looking for a cute, fun, and fast read, I highly recommend “Somewhere Between Black and White!”

I give this book 4 stars!
