“Turning Up the Heat” by Laura Westbrook

Blurb:

One woman.
One restaurant to save.
One review can make or break her dreams.

Eliza is fighting tooth and nail to keep her father’s dream alive: running a successful restaurant in the heart of Houston. Bleeding money every month and out of options, her last hope is a positive review from a popular food magazine.

Traveling all over the world, Bryan has been focusing on furthering his career as a prestigious food critic. Staying in one place too long isn’t exactly his thing. Once he visits this small restaurant in Texas and writes his last review of the trip, he can head back to Chicago to rest before the next round of globe-trotting.

Neither of them are looking for love, yet they’re immediately drawn together. It’s too bad a kitchen fire interrupts their plans, forcing them both to make a tough decision.

Between their growing attraction, separate lives, and competing dreams, the kitchen might not be the only thing going up in flames.

If you enjoy steamy romance stories with alpha men, guilty pleasures, happily ever afters, no cliffhangers, no cheating, and a touch over-the-top, then you’ll love Turning Up the Heat. Get your fix with a story that hits the spot and doesn’t take all year to read.

BOOK REVIEW: “In With the New”

September 7, 2017 Leave a Comment

“In With the New” by Tracy Krimmer

Blurb: Eli no longer believes in love, and Meg has no time for it. Can the spirit of Christmas and hope of a new year change their perspectives?

My Review: I’m a huge fan of Tracy Krimmer, so I was excited to read this novella. While I’m not really a dog person, I am an animal lover and found that I could relate to Meg in wanting to train her dog, along with trying to keep her busy job schedule. I liked Eli and how he didn’t promote his business, but rather try to help Meg. Right from the start, it was obvious that there was chemistry between them, and I liked that they took their time and didn’t rush things.

My only issue I had with this book were the ages of the characters, especially when it comes to the drama in Eli’s family–they seemed a little old to hang onto the past a bit too much, though that didn’t stop me from enjoying this read.

If you’re looking for a short, cute holiday read, I recommend this read, which would be great to cuddle up with on a chilly night.

I give “In With the New” 4.5 stars!

BOOK REVIEW: “Taking a Chance”

February 25, 2017 3 Comments

“Taking a Chance” by Becky Monson

Blurb: Liza Parker has a fear of heights, crowds and small spaces. So what’s a girl like her doing on a crowded elevator going to the top of the Empire State Building? Freaking out, that’s what she’s doing. Enter Jay Sanders, a tourist who thinks he might be able to help Liza face her fears, but she has to be willing to spend the day with a complete stranger. Maybe taking a chance on Jay is just what Liza needs.

My Review: I’ve been a huge fan of Becky Monson ever since reading “Speak Now: or Forever Hold Your Peace,” so I was excited to start “Taking a Chance.” Having it been a late and lazy Friday night, I figured why not start what turned out to be an adorable novella.

Though they began as strangers, I could feel instant chemistry grow between them–even through Liza’s fears. I loved how Jay took charge of their day together and helped her overcome several obstacles. While it was emotional for her to achieve her goals (not only for herself but mainly for her sister), I liked that it didn’t take away from the storyline between these two.

My only complaint was that I wish it could’ve been a full novel, and am curious if things continue between Liza and Jay after their day together.

If you’re looking for a uber-sweet novella you can curl up with on a lazy weekend, I definitely recommend “Taking a Chance!”

I give this book 5 stars!

monsons77better**About the author: By day, Becky Monson is a mother to three young children, and a wife. By night, she escapes with reading books and writing. In her debut novel, Becky uses humor and true-life experiences to bring her characters to life. She loves all things chick-lit (movies, books, etc.), and wishes she had a British accent. She has recently given up Diet Coke for the fiftieth time and is hopeful this time will last… but it probably won’t.
