Kristin Mayer is a wife and proud mother. Since an early age, she has always enjoyed reading and writing. While visiting her father one weekend, he suggested that she should take up writing again. With family and a career, she didn’t give it a lot of thought, until a story entered her mind and wouldn’t leave.

At the beginning of 2013, she decided to sit down and write it all down, but she kept it to herself. One sentence developed into two, and before she knew it, she had the makings of a novel.

Kristin tries to live life to the fullest during every moment. She loves to travel, meet new people, and mark items off of her bucket list.

BOOK FEATURE: “The Best Worst First Date Ever”

January 6, 2018 1 Comment

“The Best Worst First Date Ever” by Holly Kerr

Blurb: The adventures of Charlotte Dodd continue with The Best Worst First Date Ever.

Tenley Scott is a single mother and owner of Soup du Jour. She’s full of nervous excitement for her date with Colin, the handsome Brit who’s been hanging around the café.

She’s expecting casual conversation over drinks. Maybe dinner. Possibly a second date.

Not crazed ex-girlfriends, armed thugs, car crashes and a kidnapping. Worst date ever.

And then Tenley finds out about NIAA, the Canadian secret spy organization. Hello, Charlotte Dodd.

In a move out of a sci-fi movie, Charlotte’s missing memories are implanted into Tenley’s mind, giving Tenley top secret information about the Agency, dangerous spy missions and Charlotte’s love, Hamilton Short. Now it’s a race to keep Tenley out of the hands of those who want the information and to find a way to get Charlotte out of her head.

It’s been a while since Tenley’s been on a date, but this date turns out worse – and better- than she ever expected!

Excerpt:

“Incoming – hottie with the glasses,” Casey had announced under her breath. She gave me a push towards the register. “You take him – you look adorable with your hair up like that today.” I stumbled to the counter, already flustered.

“Hello,” he said politely, with the most adorable Hugh Grant-like accent.

“Can I help -?” A jerk of my hand knocks against the napkins left at cash and the package falls to the floor. I bend to retrieve them and smack my head on the counter when I stand. “Ow. Sorry. Hi.”

“Are you all right?” He looked at me with concern and the faintest tinge of amusement, which sends the blood rushing to my face.

“Fine. What can I get you?”

“Did you know…your name tag…ah, I can’t help but notice, but it appears to be upside down.” I glanced down. My Soup Du Jour name tag, which I insist all my employees wear, was indeed upside down. Colin was staring pointedly at it, his head cocked at a funny angle.

“Oh. Uh…” I was at a loss because I couldn’t turn it right side up without reaching inside my T-shirt. “It’s Tenley. My name.”

“Yes, I know,” he says with his shy smile. “Tenley.”

I like the way my name sounds with his accent. ‘Ten-ley’, with a slight upswing on the second syllable.

“Oh. Um, well, I know you’re Mr. Tea-with-vanilla-and-two-sugars.” He consistently orders a medium Earl Gray with two sugars and a shot of vanilla, the low-fat version of a London Fog, every time he comes in.

“Otherwise known as Colin.” His wide mouth quirked up at the corners when he smiled. “Colin Darcy.”

“Really?” I asked with disbelief. “That’s really your name?”

“Yes…” His eyebrow cocked up and I flushed with embarrassment.

“It’s just…it sounds like a very British name,” I say, fervently hoping he is indeed British, and not Scottish or Australian.  “You know like Colin Firth played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. And Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’ Diary. Very British.”

Can it be any more obvious that I’m seriously out of practice talking to men? Have I ever been in practice?

January 3, 2018 Leave a Comment

Blurb: At the end of her third year at Harvard Law, all Skylar Crosby wants is to figure out her next steps: a job, an apartment, and enough money to get her father out of trouble. She simply has no room for romance, especially the kind that might break your heart. But on a dark, snowy night, when she’s stranded in the living room of Brandon Sterling, the notorious CEO of Sterling Ventures and one of the best attorneys in Boston, all of those boundaries are about to be knocked down.

Brandon Sterling never believed in fate. A man of his own making, he firmly credits his successes to hard work. Now he’s living in the lap of luxury, and it’s never mattered to him that increasing success meant increased isolation in his big house on Beacon Street. Then he comes home to a feisty redhead sitting on his windowsill. Suddenly, the idea of love at first sight seems like the most plausible thing in the world…if only the one person he wants to give his heart to would actually take it.

BOOK REVIEW: “Forever My Girl”

November 28, 2017 Leave a Comment

“Forever My Girl” by Heidi McLaughlin

Blurb: I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.

I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.

And now I’m going back.

After ten years.

I hope I can explain that after all this time.

I still want her to be my forever girl.

My Review: After watching the trailer for “Forever My Girl,” I knew I had to see the movie, so when I found out that it’s based on a book, I instantly downloaded it and started reading it the following day.

This was my first time reading anything by Heidi McLaughlin, and it will not be my last. As one who loves reading country romances mixed with first loves, I knew it would be an enjoyable read. However, what I didn’t know was exactly how much I would love it. Right from the beginning, I was hooked.

Alluring, sweet, sexy, and tempting at the same time, Liam Westbury turned Liam Page is my new book boyfriend. While he did leave town, with his first love, Josie, behind, and went to follow his dreams, I believed he knew he messed up, which was why I understood the constant need to make Josie know the truth about why he left.

While to some, Josie might seem dull and weak, I found her to be not only compassionate but someone I could relate to, especially if I were put in her position.

I don’t give spoilers, but if you read the book, you will know why Liam Page has two sides to him. As for which one I loved the most, I can’t say.

Heidi McLaughlin’s writing was exquisite, and I was left wanting more (it’s a good thing this is a series, right?). The only thing about this book was that there were some editing mistakes, but being so intrigued by the characters and their storylines, it wasn’t too much of a bother.

If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh and cry (sometimes at the same time), then I highly recommend this quick and touching read.

I give “Forever My Girl” 5 stars!

BOOK REVIEW: “The Boyfriend Swap”

November 26, 2017 4 Comments

“The Boyfriend Swap” by Meredith Schorr

Blurb: If you love Christmas movies, as in you check the Hallmark Channel guide starting in July, then hang on to your stockings, because here comes the merriest of indulgences in print. It’s “The Proposal” meets “The Holiday”.

First meet Robyn Lane. She’s always dated struggling creative types, including her current squeeze (Perry, an actor). For this year’s Chrismukkah celebration, her parents would love her to bring someone stable, reliable, steadily employed. You know, with health insurance and a 401(k).

Now let’s meet Sidney Bellows. Her parents already plan her professional life (she’s an attorney at her father’s law firm). If she brings her current boyfriend (Will, an attorney) to the family Christmas extravaganza, her parents will have their wedding planned by New Year’s Eve.

Leave it to a mutual friend (and copious amounts of wine) to find a playful solution: Swap those boyfriends, fool the parents, and enjoy the holidays. It’s perfect! Robyn can show off a successful attorney boyfriend, and Sidney’s high-society family won’t ring those wedding bells when they meet a flaky actor beau.

The fun isn’t in the theory, it’s in the practice.

Will turns out to be the boy-next-door Robyn crushed on hard throughout her teenage years. Sidney’s family fawns all over Perry like he’s an Oscar-winner rather than a D-list wannabe.

Fool the parents? Enjoy the holidays? Swapping boyfriends never sounded so good or went so bad. Take time to read this one. It’s like Christmas in July.

My Review: From the first sentence to the last, this book had me hooked, and I was disappointed when it ended.

Robyn and Sidney are quite the opposite women, yet I found it funny how they picked men who belonged to the other.

As far as Robyn, she seemed to be a dedicated music teacher who just wanted someone to love and who would love her. I liked her with Perry but didn’t ever sense any real chemistry. However, there were definite sparks between her and Will. Robyn and Will made a beautiful couple.

Sidney is a straightforward woman who knows exactly what she wants, allowing herself for little fun. While I did like her and Will, who seemed like a power-couple, when Perry is brought into her world, I loved the sexual tension and could see them together. They made for a few laugh-out-loud moments.

I do not like to give spoilers in my review, so you’ll just have to read the book and find out how it ends. Though, I must say…W.O.W.!

I’ve been a big fan of Meredith Schorr’s for years, and have often referred to her as my go-to author for when I’m looking for something to read. Whichever book she’s released, I guarantee you will love it! I’m not one who usually reads holiday books, but this one is by far an exception.

“The Boyfriend Swap” will stay with me for a long time, and I’m already wishing for a sequel! If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh and cry, and will fill your heart with joy, then I recommend this romantic read.

I give “The Boyfriend Swap” 5 stars!

When Landon shows up at the mall and Juliette prevents a disaster, he can’t stop thinking about that sweet elf. Juliette doesn’t believe in the spirit of Christmas, but she can’t help but wonder why Landon was in her line that day. Could Landon deserve one of those second chances she’s so unwilling to give?

Excerpt Something Just Like This by Tracy Krimmer

“Don’t be a Grinch!”
“Huh?” I lift my gaze and my best friend and co-worker Carly stands in the doorway, the smile so bright on her face it almost blinds me. “What do you mean don’t be a Grinch?”
“Oh, you know,” she says as she makes her way into the room, planting herself in my chair. “Like you are every holiday season.”
“I’m not a Grinch.” Maybe I am. I try my best not to show it. It’s possible I don’t have a convincing poker face. Poker was never my game, anyway.
“You most certainly are. Every Christmas party you sulk at the table drinking gin and tonic and refuse to join in on anything. This year, you are in. You’ll be the life of the party.”
“Over my dead body.”
“Shit, Jules, your stiff body would be a better time than you are alive at these functions.”
She’s right, and I know it. Why is she always right? I want to take offense but it’s no secret I’m not Christmas’s biggest fan. I may be the only elf working at the mall that despises it. The elf job isn’t for me, though. I do it for others. That’s festive, isn’t it? Isn’t Christmas about giving? I do plenty of that.
“Leave me alone. And why are you so bubbly? Did you drink a bottle of bubble bath or something?” I grab the container of pens, staples, and paperclips out of the box and place them on the desk. This is much easier to deal with than the picture of my family with our fake smiles.
“Oh, I don’t know.”
She dots her face with her fingertips, moving them around from one side to the other. Why is she acting so weird? “Wait.” I stop when I see it. “Are you wearing an engagement ring?”
She squeals and pops out of the chair, rushing over to show me. Her hand misses smacking me in the face as she shows off her princess cut ring, sparkles and all. “Pretty.”
“Pretty? Are you kidding me right now, Jules? This ring is gorgeous and fit for the fairest princess in the land.”
“Which is you, I assume.”
“What crawled into your pants this morning? Or should I ask who didn’t? Another bad date, huh?”
I shrug, not in the mood to discuss my date with Romeo. No joke. My cousin Dana claimed she found the perfect guy for me, and I said yes to a blind date. His name was Romy, like Mira Sorvino in that movie Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. I’d only ever heard the name Romy from that movie. It turned out he used Romy as a nickname for Romeo. Yeah. Dana set me up with a Romeo because of course we’d be Romeo and Juliette. Barf. I don’t even spell my name like the Shakespearean character, and the last thing I would ever do is poison myself over a man. Dana had her fun. I did not. She’s never setting me up again.
“Let’s say I got home very early, watched an entire movie, and was asleep by ten.”
“Ouch. That is a bad date.”
