An Interview with Mary Kay Andrews & a Giveaway!

November 8, 2013 3 Comments

With great pleasure, I’m thrilled to have interviewed one of my favorite authors. She’s funny, inspiring, and her books are a true joy to read. Without further ado, here’s New York Times Bestselling Author, Mary Kay Andrews!BlackMKAAuthor, Mary Kay Andrews

INTERVIEW

Have you always loved to write? Yes! On the first day of first grade our teacher asked us to draw a picture of what we wanted to be when we grew up. While the other kids drew firemen and nurses and teachers and cowboys, I drew a picture of a lady sitting at a tall table in front of a wall of books—my six-year-old image of what a writer looked like.

How did you celebrate when you first book was published? With a party! My friends threw me a party at the house that inspired the setting for my first book, EVERY CROOKED NANNY.

Where is your ideal place to write? I like to write with the sunshine streaming in on me—at our vacation house on Tybee Island, or in the sun room of our restored Craftsman bungalow in Atlanta.

How has social media changed your career? Social media has connected me with so many fans and given me instant feedback on what my readers like and dislike. They enjoy being part of a community, and I enjoy hearing from them. That said, I spend a tremendous amount of time and energy staying connected with them.

What is the best advice you can give to a new author? Don’t fixate on writing that first “perfect chapter.” Just get on with the story—and finish it. You can go back and revise and hone and polish after you get the story down in black and white.

Who or what inspires you to write? Envy—when I read a great novel or chapter, I want to try to create something just as moving.

What is your favorite word? Vintage!

Every writer must have a…: Fine-point black felt tip pen.

What time of day do you seem to work best? Mornings when I wake up with an idea bubbling up from my self-consciousness, I reach for my laptop, prop myself up in bed and write like a woman possessed.

If you’re not writing, you’re probably: junking

What are you reading right now? Lee Smith’s Guests on Earth.

Are you a panster or planner? Mostly a pantser, although I’m always trying to plot and plan.

Do you have a motto? You can’t fix what you ain’t wrote.

Where is your favorite vacation place? Tuscany. Would love to go back someday soon.

Do you and your family have any Christmas traditions? If so, what are they? Children’s mass Christmas Eve, baking cookies together, Christmas stockings opened first thing Christmas morning, burning all the dried-out greenery in the fireplace Christmas night.

AlissaBaxterPic

About author, Alissa Baxter: Alissa Baxter was born in South Africa, and grew up with her nose in a book on a poultry and cattle farm. After school and university, where she majored in Political Science and French, she published her first novel, The Dashing Debutante. Alissa travelled to London, England, and did an odd assortment of jobs while researching her second novel, Lord Fenmore’s Wager, which she wrote after she moved back to South Africa and settled in Durban. Alissa then relocated to Cape Town where she wrote her third novel, Send and Receive, before moving to Johannesburg, where she currently lives with her husband and son.

INTERVIEW

Describe your writing style in five sentences: I write sweet romance with a chick lit flavour, primarily from the heroine’s point of view – although I usually manage to sneak in the hero’s point of view with either emails or blog posts. I enjoy writing witty, humorous dialogue and the tone of my books is usually light-hearted. However, I like to explore particular themes in my books on a deeper level. I write in the third person, although I usually manage to incorporate this heroine’s first person point of view in some way or another. My books are generally quite fast paced.

Have you always wanted to be a writer? I’ve wanted to be a writer since the age of seven when I learned to read.

What was your writing/editing/publishing process like? I wrote the first draft of the manuscript in ten weeks, which was pretty exhausting! I have a wonderful editor at Decadent Publishing and her helpful suggestions were just what I needed to polish the manuscript. Decadent is a wonderful publisher in that they are very professional, but they treat you as an individual as well.

Who or what inspires your writing? Real life people and events inspire my writing. I enjoy analysing relationships and trying to understand what makes people tick.

What time of day do you seem to work the best? I work best in the morning – although at the moment I tend to work at night, as I have an 18 month old toddler who keeps me very busy during the day!

How did you celebrate when your first book was published? I celebrated the publication of my first novel (a Regency romance) with my parents. They’ve always been so supportive of my writing journey and I wouldn’t be where I am now without them.

If you could meet any author, who would it be? I’d love to meet Cathy Kelly – I really enjoy her novels.

What are you reading right now? The Magic of Christmas by Trisha Ashley.

In five years, where do you see yourself? Hopefully having published a few more books.

Hard/paperbacks or eBooks? I love reading hard/paperbacks, but I’ve just bought a Kindle so I’m sure I’ll be reading more eBooks soon.

Do you have a motto for writing? “When you’re feeling scared about something you’re about to write, press through that fear. It’s that which takes you to a new level in your writing.”

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects? I tend to become intrigued with the lives of the secondary characters in my books, and I’m writing a story at the moment about a character who appeared in The Blog Affair.

Blurb of “The Blog Affair”:

Twenty-something, white, South African Emma Bradshaw has a pattern of falling for unsuitable men and starts a blog about these so-called “serial datists”. Her search for new beginnings takes her to Cape Town, where she gets a job working for sexy author, Nick Reynolds. Romance with her boss is a no-no, but slowly, Nick works his way around her defenses. Trust him, or not, especially with her awful track record with men?

When an anonymous male reader of the blog challenges her on her ideas about the male species, Emma realises she must confront her past and find her true self before she can move forward…and love can blossom again in her future.

Chapter 1 tease of “The Blog Affair”

Durban, South Africa

Emma Bradshaw stared out into the inky darkness of the garden. The cool night air whispered in a soft, faint breeze against her skin and she shifted in her chair. She was sitting on the veranda of the house she shared with four other people, and though the sun had set a full hour ago, she hadn’t switched the outside light on. Instead, she welcomed the darkness and solitude of the winter evening, wrapping it around her like a well-worn coat.

Solitude, like the darkness, was her old friend.

Everyone else, as far as she could tell, had gone to the movies tonight, but she had elected to stay at home. Hearing a sound behind her, Emma turned her head and blinked a few times as light flooded the outside area.

Angie, one of her digsmates, opened the door and stepped out onto the veranda. “Hey, Em. Why you’re sitting alone in the dark?” She came across to the ancient sofa where Emma was curled up.

Emma summoned a smile. Out of all her housemates, Angie was the one she was most able to deal with at the moment. Short, pretty, with dark, curly hair, Angie always reminded her of a porcelain doll for some reason. One of those delicately made figurines with big, blinking blue eyes and real eyelashes that gazed out on the world with innocent candour.

“I’ve been out here for a while. Didn’t have the energy to turn the light on.”

Angie sat down. “You okay?”

“I’m fine, just a bit tired. You?”

Angie had an abstracted look on her face. “I’ve just got the most unexpected email.”

Emma straightened her legs and sat up. “Oh?”

“You remember that guy I told you about, the one I had an email relationship with? Well, he’s just written to apologise. I can’t believe it.” Angie frowned as she glanced down at the page in her hand. “I’m not sure what to make of it. What do you think?”

Emma took the piece of paper and scanned it.

“Dear Angie,

I’m sure you never expected to hear from me again. I certainly had no intention of ever writing to you again. But, somewhere at the back of my mind, the thought of you kept nagging, and my rather inactive conscience decided, much to my surprise, to kick into gear.

Dear, sweet Angie, who probably never sees anything except in terms of black or white. Most of us, though, are shades of grey. I know I am, although I’m probably on the darker side of grey….

An explanation, I suppose, is due you, but what in all honesty can I say? And honesty is the key word in all this. You will see me as a scoundrel, no doubt. A lying cheat. I have no acceptable explanation or defence, acceptable to you, that is, my idealistic Angie, but what I will say is that I saw in you, for a brief time, my lost innocence, and it appealed to me. It appealed to me damnably, and I ended up hurting you in the process. I’m sorry about that.

I’m also sorry that I’ve lost a potentially brilliant PA, and that I’ll have to advertise for one, after all. It would have been interesting to work with you, but our roads, of necessity, must remain parted. I hope I haven’t knocked too many stars out of your eyes, but I have a feeling that you have your own inner spiritual resources to draw on, and that you’ll bounce back in time.

Take care of yourself,

Nick.”

“Ha! The darker side of grey. You can say that again.” She handed the letter back to Angie.

Her friend seemed troubled. “What do you make of it?”

“His guilty conscience is playing up, so he thought he’d contact you, because he knows you’re a sucker, and you’ll write back to him, forgiving all.”

“So you don’t think he’s being sincere?”

“When are men ever sincere?”

“You can’t generalise like that!”

“Okay. Correction. When are men ever sincere in their relationships with women? They’re all liars. You know that.”

Angie studied her in silence. “You still haven’t got over him, have you?”

“Over who?”

“Phil.”

“I got over him a long time ago. In fact, I’m not just over him; I’m over the moon he’s overseas at the moment.”

“You sound really over him.”

Emma said nothing and returned to her study of the garden. After a while, she said, “I wish I could just get away from it all. Move away…start a new life, in a new place, without any memories holding me back. I can’t escape my mind, and that’s the worst thing of all. He’s always with me and everywhere I go, I see him.”

“Why don’t you move, then?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I suppose I’m scared. It’s one thing changing jobs, but moving away from Durbs? I’ve been in my job for three years now. You don’t just throw away a job like that.”

“You could find another job as a PA.”

Emma gave a short laugh. “With your friend Nick, no doubt.”

“I hadn’t thought of that! But ja, why not? You could move to Cape Town, and I could have someone to stay with when I go on holiday there!”

“I’ve always wanted to move to Cape Town so people could use me as a cheap holiday destination.”

“Seriously, Em! It’s a great job. It’s not only PA work. I imagine you’d help Nick research his books, as well.”

“You really want to toss me into the lion’s den with that seducer of innocents?”

“He didn’t seduce me!”

“He sure as hell tried to. No, Ange. It’s a silly idea.”

“Think about it, at least.”

She frowned. “But wouldn’t it be kind of weird? Me working with your email lover?”

“My ex-email lover. Besides, I’m over it all now. Since I’ve been going out with Guy, I’ve barely thought about Nick. It wouldn’t bother me in the least if you worked for him.”

“It might bother him, though,” Emma pointed out.

Angie smiled in triumph. “So you are considering it!”

She shrugged again and said nothing.

“Think about it, Em. It could be just what you need.”

“You’re so keen to see the back of me?”

“Of course not! I’d miss you if you went. But you said you need to get away. And Cape Town’s beautiful.”

Angie went back inside five minutes later, and after a while, Emma followed suit. She walked into her bedroom and went directly to her desk in the corner. Opening her laptop, she logged onto the Internet. Her mind wandered back to her conversation with Angie, and she sighed. Maybe a change of scene would do her good; help her move on with her life and put the past behind her.

For the past few weeks, she had been thinking a lot about changing her life, and had been toying with the idea of creating her own blog so that she could clarify her thought processes. She’d always kept a diary, and a blog, in a lot of ways, was an online diary—with the added benefit that she could interact with people online. The idea of venting her emotions in cyberspace was appealing, and in some way, symbolic of letting go…. And she certainly needed to let go.

She went through the blog registration process, and then frowned at the blank screen as she contemplated what she should write for her first post.

After a few moments, she started typing.

PENELOPE’S PANTRY

…A PLACE FOR YOU TO POINT OUT YOUR VIEW

Serial Datism

The first time I ever met a serial datist, I was nineteen years old. At that age, I wasn’t capable of recognising the warning signs of this particular species of the human male. Needless to say, I got burned. Badly.

Serial datism is a concept I’ve been pondering recently. And it’s something I hope to examine in this blog. Any comments from readers are welcome, therefore, as I attempt to shed light on a variety of the dating male that has me completely bemused.

The best way to do this, I’ve decided, is to debate in an open forum—where I, and any other participants in the discussion, can flick on the switch, in a manner of speaking, and illuminate the matter.

I attract serial datists, and so it is perfectly fitting that I should introduce this topic into cyber space. But this doesn’t mean I’m an expert at identifying them. You see, the tricky thing about serial datists is that they aren’t easily defined.

They come in many shapes and sizes and forms, and they may even mutate! They can start off in one form and end up in quite another shape and size within a small space of time. And therein lies their danger.

Okay—to introduce myself. I’m Penelope (well, that’s one of my names) and this blog is called Penelope’s Pantry, because like Penelope from ancient Greek mythology, I’ve had loads of suitors in my life.

And the pantry part? Well, a pantry is a dark storeroom, and this is where I hope to stockpile my thoughts and feelings and emotions. On neatly stacked shelves, of course. I’m a fanatically neat person, and like things to be tidy.

So let’s start at the very beginning (my ordered mind demands this) with a definition of a serial datist: He is a male who, like a bee, goes from one woman to the next, landing on each female blossom for a short period of time. When he leaves, he stings them.

But unfortunately, unlike a bee, a serial datist doesn’t die after he stings. He goes on to sting again and again, and the only way to kill him is to swat him, or stomp on him with your heel. Or leave out a bowl of sugared water in which he can drown. But, on second thoughts, I think the latter technique is for ants….

Be that as it may, before anyone starts wondering whether I’m a convicted killer, I hasten to assure you I am not. I’ve certainly felt a strong desire to stomp on the various bees that have entered my life, but fortunately for these creatures, the thought of killing causes me to break out in hives. Therefore, it is only a fantasy I have indulged in from time to time.

Now that we’ve cleared up the fact that I’m not a murderer, I would like to point out that the bee who delivers his nasty stings is the real killer in the scenario. Why? Well, it’s obvious. He kills your feelings, and leaves your emotions bleeding to death. Some more pedantic readers out there might point out that bee stings don’t cause you to bleed. So what—I’m using it in a figurative sense.

But, and here I’m not being figurative at all, bees can make you swell up. Besides the fact that their stings can cause you to comfort-eat, it is possible to develop a life-threatening allergy to them. And I’m afraid that’s what’s happened to me. I am allergic to serial datists AKA bees AKA Emotionally Unavailable Men.

But I’m jumping ahead of myself. That is simply one of the categories of serial datists. According to my calculations, there are at least four others.

Allow me to list them:

1) The afore-mentioned Emotionally Unavailable Male

2) The Wannabe Player

3) The Commitment-Phobe

4) The Bad Boy

5) The Misogynist (before he finds a woman to control)

I will be examining each category in more detail later. But in the meantime—any comments from readers on what I’ve already expounded are most welcome.

Writing a Novel Really is Like Winning the World Series or Super Bowl

October 23, 2013 3 Comments

I know you’re probably thinking, “Two blog posts from Isabella in six days?” Well, you’re right!

If you follow sports, then you probably know that tonight is the first game of the World Series. For the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals will be playing the American League Champions, the Boston Red Sox. (For those of you that know me, you know how hard it was to write the words, American League Champions and Red Sox, right?)

Non-sports fans, I will stop boring you now…

Practice: If you’re a writer, you know that it’s best to write every single day. Whether it’s 100 or 1,000 words, it’s important to just get something down. This is especially important if you’re on a deadline. Practice, practice, practice = write, write, write! (Blogger note: After “The Right Design” is published in January, I need to learn to take my own advice to write each day!)

The Game: Yay! You’ve written a book! Sit back and relax! Take a week off (at the most, two), but be prepared to come back to your novel, knowing the hard part is just beginning! “The hard part?” you ask me. “YES!” Playing the game, is the hard part! If this weren’t true, being a writer would be easy, but it’s not. It’s the part where you look back over your MS, and even dabble in the thought of sending it out to beta-readers (I loved mine) and to anyone else who you think would like to read it over. The most important part of this process is picking people who will give you honest and helpful feedback.

Championship Games: If you’ve revised your book and are happy with it, now it’s time to play the game. Since you have coaches (um, I mean, editors), then you should feel in safe hands with them as they guide you down the field (or, in this case, page by page). Every whistle they blow (comment they make), time out they call (email they send you to cheer you on or answer a question you had), they’re there for you. If you have talented people to help you along the way, then you’re bound to learn to play the game the right way, and I’m sure you’ll learn a few things in the process.

World Series or Super Bowl: Congratulations! You’ve made it to the World Series or Super Bowl! How do you feel to have your manuscript completed? Now that it’s gone live for the world to see (meaning you’ve pressed “PUBLISH”), it’s time to be welcomed out onto the field. Whether you’re the starting pitcher or quarterback (a well-known author) or you’ll be playing in the outfield or wide receiver (a debut author, who’s being welcomed into the world of publishing), it’s time to start gathering your fanbase. While it’s nice to have your friends and family support you, it’s also important for others to do so, too. Using social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter are the two places I highly recommend. Create Facebook and Twitter pages and enjoy receiving “Likes” and “Follows” along the way. **Blogger tip: When using Facebook, do not create a page using your book’s name, use your author name. This will be easier for when you playing in the World Series or Super Bowl again and your fans know what you’re up to.

The most important step in playing this game is to know that you won’t win each game. Sometimes, you’ll just come to play (publish a book and just having it just do okay). Don’t worry, there will be next games (books you’ll write), and you might even win the World Series or Super Bowl. When you do, it’s important for you to take time to enjoy being in the spotlight. Tell yourself, “I can do this! I’m an author!” (It might take even weeks for it to hit you that you’ve written an Amazon or B&N top ten list).

My question for you is, “Are you ready to go to Disneyland?” If so, start practicing! 🙂

Captivating the CEO

CaptivatingTheCEOCoverPic

Blurb of “Captivating the CEO”: When live-for-the-moment massage therapist Willow Jeffries bursts into Colin Vanderhayden’s office, she makes it her mission to loosen up the future-focused CEO, knowing each moment of the present is too precious to waste. Despite her immediate attraction, the only future she can offer is one full of heartache.

The last thing Colin needs is a flighty woman messing up his carefully-constructed plans, but her heavenly massages and addictive personality prove heard to resist. But he has no idea how sick she is.

No longer able to ignore her life-threatening medical condition, Willow slips away to spare Colin a miserable future with her. Is Colin willing to sacrifice his well-laid future plans to get Willow back?

Excerpt of “Captivating the CEO”

Cupping her face with his hands and angling his mouth, he poured the intensity she’d previously only seen him devote to his work into turning her body into a tingling, craving mass of need. She loved the way he cradled her-so gentle, yet firm.

Stars danced in front of her eyes, but she willed them away to press her tongue between his lips. No matter how light-headed she became, she refused to miss a moment of the kiss. Colin’s mouth made the opportunity to enjoy worth the risk of passing out.

But, too soon, he broke off, panting, his eyes dilated with desire. “I have to get that.”

“Get what?” His words made no sense, then her ears started ringing. No, not her ears. His damned phone.

“Of course you do.”

But he’d already turned his attention to a conversation he gave far more importance to than anything she offered.

Sinking onto the couch, she pressed her fingers to her still tingling lips. Dear God, she hoped she didn’t affect him as strongly as he affected her. If he became emotionally invested, she’d bring pain and misery into his life.

Jamie Farrell

JamieFarrellPic

About author, Jamie Farrell: Jamie Farrell writes humorous contemporary romance. She believes love and laughter are two of the most powerful forces in the universe. A native Midwesterner, Jamie has lived in the South the majority of her adult life. When she’s not writing, she and her military hero husband are busy raising three hilariously unpredictable children.

INTERVIEW

Describe yourself in five words: SuperMom in a broken SuperSuit

What is the writing/editing/publishing like for you? I write a dirty first draft, then spend a lot of time coaxing the story into layers that hopefully meld together. My two critique partners, Kelsey Browning and Maria Geraci, are fabulous at helping me smooth out the rough parts. Some books are easier than others. Southern Fried Blues was one of those stories that just flowed, and I loved every minute of writing it.

I love the publishing aspects of my writer life, too, because the publishing side of things lets me tap into my dormant geeky engineer personality, with tracking and formatting and analyzing opportunities. Overall, the whole writing-to-publishing process is a lot of fun.

Salty or sweet? Salted caramel.

How did you celebrate when your first book was published? The hubby took me out on a dinner date without the kids. He read Southern Fried Blues for the first time the day it was published, so we gossiped a lot about the book. It felt like he’d finally met my coworkers after listening to me tell stories about them forever.

What is your favorite word? Discombobulated. It’s so much fun to say!

How do you come up with the titles of your books? I think about the themes in the story, then play with the key words that stand out. If a title makes me giggle too hard, I know it’s probably not marketable (although I still hope to one day revisit an old manuscript that I call Stealing Gran’s Booty), but if it’s too generic for the story, I keep trying until I find something that fits. It usually comes to me either while I’m walking or while I’m in the shower. I love the tingly, oooh! feeling that comes when the right title clicks.

The best part about being a writer is…: Knowing that 95% of the characters in my head think I’m a goddess, and I can write the other 5% out of my stories if they misbehave.

Every writer must have a…: An anchor. Writing can be a lonely profession, so having someone who gets it and is supportive is so important.

How has the social media helped your career? Social media has introduced me to some of the smartest, savviest people in the writing business. It has also introduced me to some of the most generous people on earth. In fact, I wouldn’t be here today if not for social media. 🙂

Who or what inspires your writing? Life’s funny moments inspire me. I love the unusual and unexpected parts of every day life, and so having three kids under six provides me with plenty of opportunity to look at life sideways.

What’s the best advice for a new writer? No one else’s right way will be your right way. Don’t settle for someone else’s dream. Go after yours, and own it. Decide what you want from your writing, and then work hard to make it happen. Study your craft, seek feedback from people whose opinions you trust, but most of all, put your fingers to the keyboard and write, write, write.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects? I’m working on a new contemporary romance series set in a cute little place that calls itself the most married-est town on Earth. The first book, The Husband Games, is about a divorced single mother and a military widower and their unexpected roles in the town’s annual Knot Festival. I am super excited about this series—there’s something about quirky, small-town America that just makes me happy.

A Southern Gentleman Military Officer

Jackson Davis believes in family, football, and Uncle Sam. He treats ladies right, takes his uniform seriously, and he loves his dog, but he doesn’t reckon he’s built for true love. After all, if a man good as his daddy couldn’t do it right, what chance does Jackson have?

One Undeniable Attraction

These two vulnerable souls are as different as cornbread and ketchup, but they fit together like sweet butter on hot biscuits. Short-term, they’re exactly what the other needs. But when their hearts get involved, they’re both gonna end up with a big ol’ case of Southern Fried Blues.

CHAPTER 1 TEASE

Chapter One

She was lovable in her own way, which sometimes meant she was not loved at all.

—The Temptress of Pecan Lane, by Mae Daniels

THE ONLY THING better than watching a handsome man in uniform was taking him home at the end of the night to strip him out of it. With his fresh haircut and tailored Air Force mess dress, Anna Martin’s husband complemented the elegant southern grandiosity of The Harrington’s ballroom better than the faux marble floor and the towering magnolia arrangements.

This wedding reception couldn’t end soon enough.

Anna slid up beside Neil at the open bar and nudged him with her hip. “I always feel bad for the bride at these things.”

“Why?” Neil took two beers from the bartender. He tucked a few dollars into the tip jar.

“Because you’re already taken so they had to settle for second best.”

His face twisted into the same pained expression he’d worn the last half-dozen times she’d used that line, but she gave him a you-know-you-love-me grin anyway.

Because he’d still been happy to let her take him home and strip him out of his uniform after the last half-dozen weddings.

She shoved the gift she’d snuck from the pile at the bride’s request at him. “Oh, wait.” His National Defense Service Medal was crooked.

Before she could straighten it, he handed the gift back. “It’s fine, Anna. C’mon.”

He strode past tables of wedding guests finishing their chicken and cheese grits. Anna tagged along, enjoying the view from behind.

“Jules mention what’s in that?” Neil asked over his shoulder, his gaze shifting to the present.

“She said it’s from Rodney and they want to open it in private. So probably something with fur and spikes.”

SarahBellePic

About author, Sarah Belle: Sarah Belle started her professional life in the hospitality industry, working in some of the roughest hotels in Melbourne in the late Eighties, surrounded by drug dealers, prostitutes, pimps, and undercover police. Tiring of the inherent dangers of her working environment, Sarah completed a business degree and went on to work in the recruitment industry and the Department of Defense, where she met and married the man of her dreams: a dashing, Army Blackhawk pilot. They have four young sons and live on the beautiful Queensland coast, where Sarah’s days are spent being a frazzled mum, writer, Bikram Yoga devotee and the only woman in a house of five males.

INTERVIEW

Describe your writing style in five words: Humorous, heartwarming, romagic, chick lit. (Romagic is my new buzz word that is taking off – it’s romantic comedy with a dash of magic – spells, time travel, wishes, etc, but not enough to be classed as Paranormal or Fantasy)

If you weren’t a writer, you’d be a: deluded, insane mother of four boys!

Tell us about your book, “Hindsight”: Humour, wit, and just a touch of humility: the swinging 60s as you’ve never seen them before!

The universe has sent Juliette a sign. She wishes it had been an email instead…

Juliette’s career is on fire, her marriage and family are in melt-down, and a red-hot goddess wants her husband. But those are the least of her worries when she wakes up on her lounge room floor in the year 1961.

Without any of her modern conveniences — nanny, housekeeper, surgically attached mobile phone, designer wardrobe, and intravenous lattes — Juliette is just over fifty years out of her comfort zone. But as she takes on the role of a 1961 housewife, with gritted liberated teeth, she discovers an unexpected truth: slower doesn’t mean boring, at home doesn’t mean dull, and priorities don’t mean sacrifices.

As she finds unexpected friendships, a resuscitated love life, tragedy and triumph, Juliette begins to wonder if she really wants to return home after all.

Hardback/paperbacks or eBooks? It’s available as an Ebook from Escape Publishing.

What was the writing/editing/publishing process like? A huge learning curve! But now I am a little wiser so next time I won’t be so overwhelmed. During all my years as a reader, I am ashamed to say that I never gave any thought to how hard authors work to write their stories, publish and promote them.

What is your favorite word? Romagic comedy!

How did you celebrate when your book was published? I had a blog launch, where I chatted with my friends, and a little glass of bubbles!

What is the best part about being an author? Making friends with other writers – we can chat about books all day and no one’s eyes glaze over in boredom! It’s a real community.

Where is your favorite place to write? I have now pinched my 10 year old son’s homework desk in his room. He is a very chilled kid and the room has a great energy about it.

Career wise, where do you expect to be in five years? Still writing, but doing it smarter.  I don’t want to churn the books out, for the sake of it, but I would like future books to take much less than the 2 years Hindsight took me!

What is the best advice to someone who wants to be a writer? Learn the craft and never give up. Join writing groups – such as the amazing Chick Lit Goddesses- because no one will understand the hurdles you face better than another writer. By the way, thank you Isabella for creating CLG! You have literally bought a world of writers together.

Can you tell us about any of your upcoming projects? I’ve got a 60K novel about a woman who casts a spell that destroys her current life, a novella with an imaginary friend wandering around in it, and am plotting another novel where the protagonist has to deal with, and outsmart, a very sexy devil!

Katy Regnery

KateRegneryPic

About author, Kate Regnery: Katy is a 2013 NECRWA First Kiss, 2013 NTRWA Great Expectations and 2013 SOLA Dixie Kane contest winner who has always loved telling a good story. She credits her mother with making funny, heartwarming tales come alive throughout her childhood. A lifelong devotee of all Romance writing, from Edwardian to present-day, it was just a matter of time before Katy tried her hand at writing a love story of her own.

Katy lives in the relative-wilds of northern Fairfield County, Connecticut where her writing room looks out at the woods, and her husband, two young children and two dogs create just enough cheerful chaos to remind her that the very best love stories of all can often be the messy or unexpected ones.

INTERVIEW

Describe your writing style in five sentences: I write sweet, small-town contemporary romances that generally use a hero/heroine alternating point of view. I try to keep my dialogue sharp and witty, but I also do a fair amount of thoughtful exposition. Satisfying micro and macro arcs are really important to me; I don’t like leaving loose ends!

When did you know you wanted to be a writer? I took my first writing class with the local continuing education program in January 2012. That Spring I wrote a lot of short stories, but I didn’t really think about novel writing until September when I started writing By Proxy. I completed By Proxy in November 2012 and it was contracted in March 2013.

Hard/paperbacks or eBooks? I have a small collection of paperbacks that were meaningful to me when I read them. I can’t part with them yet, even though some of them are on my Kindle too. But, I’m 100% digital at this point. I can’t remember the last time I bought a paper book.

How did you celebrate the publication of your first book? When By Proxy debuted, my husband was on a business trip and my kids were asleep, so I was all alone! I opened a bottle of Champagne and poured myself a glass. Then I sat on my computer for hours, toggling between Twitter, Facebook and Amazon, just watching it all happen. Pretty intense. Pretty awesome.

What is the writing/editing/publishing process like for you? My writing process is generally very intense. I want to write all the time and it’s really hard for me to balance my “real” life with writing time. I’m pretty compulsive when I’m on a jag, and I’ve been known to write 8,000-10,000 words a day.

I view the editing process as a fail-safe and I am immensely grateful for it. I look forward to the feedback my editor gives me and I take revisions really, really seriously. It’s my chance to make a 3-4 star book into a 4-5 star book.

I’ve only published one book so far, but it was pretty emotional! I was so nervous and excited before my book launched, then euphoric once it did, then terrified it would flop. I am just getting to a place now where I am starting to relax about it.

If you’re not writing, then you’re probably…: Driving my kids to their activities, hanging out on social media, or picking up a Café Americana decaf with four shots. (I specifically take a break every day to drive to my favorite coffee shop!)

Who or what inspires you? Any love story inspires me. On TV, in movies, in books. I was recently at a wedding and a young couple shared the story of how they met at summer camp as kids and found each other again in Manhattan twenty years later. I was utterly captivated, and thought to myself, “Hmm. Summer camp. Good setting…”

Where is your favorite place to write? I have a small office in my home. To my right is window that looks out on our backyard, and to my left is a window that looks out into the woods. As far as I’m concerned, it’s perfect.

You write under two names, are there any differences between your characters? Yes, lots. My Katy Regnery romances are sweet and the characters are – for the most part – grounded and “normal.” My K.P. Kelley paranormals are visceral, sometimes violent and the emotionality is much more absolute and intense.

What do you want your readers to take away from your books? That there’s someone for everyone. I really believe that. You have to keep your heart and eyes open, but if you desire love – if you really, really want love in your life – I believe you’ll find it.

Every writer must have a…: Good sound system in their office or writing space. I couldn’t do without mine! I’d say I play music at least 60% of the time while I’m writing. I have playlists that specifically correlate to each book, and no matter how much time goes by between typing “The End” and doing revisions, the music will take me right back into my characters’ heads.

Can you tell us about any of your upcoming projects? A novella “The Christmas Wish,” my second Heart of Montana book, will be out the first week in November. The ensuing four Heart of Montana books will be out in January, April, July and October 2014, and January 2015. It’s an aggressive release schedule, but almost all are already written.

My first paranormal, It’s You, comes out in Spring 2014.

ByProxyCoverPic

Blurb of “By Proxy”:

“Is my virtue safe?” Sam asked.

“Safer than it was in Chicago,” Jenny answered, getting the better of him.

He chuckled. “Phew! Okay. That’s a relief. Yes, I will come watch a Christmas movie with you. But you better keep your hands to yourself, Jenny. I mean it.”

She shook her head, smiling as they made their way across the bridge. “You are an ass.”

He gasped. “Jenny Lindstrom! A swearword!”

She giggled merrily. “An animal.”

“The back end of one.”

“As you said.”

“Do you kiss your father with that mouth?”

“I kissed you with that mouth.”

He stopped walking beside her, but their hands connected them and she had to drop his hand or stop and turn back to him. She stopped and turned. He was standing beside the last lamppost on the bridge, leaning against it with his arm outstretched to her. As she approached him in the dim light, she could see his eyes sparkling.

“No, Jen. I kissed you.” He pulled her closer. “But I’m open to a do-over.”

Dangerous Flames

Book Review of “Dangerous Flames”

DangerousFlamesCover

“Dangerous Flames” by Wendy Ely

Book Description:

Back from spending her teen years in Italy, Gabrielle Medini wants answer to the hard questions. She quickly learns that the Mafia still has a hand in controlling society and her father is the Don of the largest mob organization in the area. When a hit order is taken out on her father and one of his members will be doing the killing, Gabi’s mother demands Gabi’s disappearance. For good. This time she refuses to go alone.

The Mafia doesn’t seem so glamorous any more. Not sure what Mik’s role in her father’s crime family is but sure he is involved, Gabrielle has reason to believe that her secret love’s safety is in jeopardy too.

Mikolas Russo is one hit away from becoming part of the Medini crime family. But is this what he really wants? Killing people for money is what he has been trained to do even though he’d give anything to trade the nightmares for sweet dreams of the forbidden Gabrielle. Thinking he has the chance to reveal his feelings to her, he arrives at her house to find her brandishing a loaded gun, ready to take control.

Will the truth fulfill her desires, or will Mikolas be the one to shatter everything?

My Review:

This is my second book I’ve read by Wendy Ely, so I was excited to read “Dangerous Flames”. It began quickly and almost immediately, the story had me in suspense. Whether I was hoping for Gabrielle’s safe escape to her father’s cabin (along with the person she brings with her…no spoilers ;)), and for her and Mikolas to get together, I was on the edge of my seat.

I liked all the characters, especially Gabi, and thought the book ended as it should have. My only concern was that I would have liked to have seen more of who Gabrielle and Mikolas were before she left the country. However, the passion between them since she’s been back, and even when they’re disagreeing, is very obvious.

Wendy Ely is an amazing author who has written a steamy love story between Gabriella and Mikolas, one I really enjoyed, and I can’t wait to read more of her books! If you’re looking for a steamy and mysterious weekend read, I highly recommend “Dangerous Flames”.

I give this book 4 stars!
