EXCERPT:

I’m four days shy of my eighteenth birthday, sandwiched between two Olympic gold medalists, and preparing to race for a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics for the 400-meter event.

How did I even make it to the finals?

Hot bile floods my throat. As sweat drips from my brow, I hear a crazy woman shouting over the crowd.

“Breathe, baby! Breathe!”

Peeking over at the gate to the right of me, our eyes connect. I realize she’s my crazy woman. With her huge smile and eyes blazing with pride, my mom always brings me comfort. My gaze slides from her encouraging face and lands on that of my boyfriend. Patrick’s crooked smile has been the same since we were kids.

Just the sight of them, here by my side, reassures me. I gulp in a deep, cleansing breath and bow my head. This silences the deafening noise, and it helps me to forget my shortcomings.

“On your marks!” a stern voice—the voice I’ve been listening for—bellows over the loudspeaker.

I step in front of my tightly spaced starting blocks, jumping one last time into the air to activate my muscles. Then I crawl backwards into the blocks, my left foot positioned in the back. As I slide my feet in, a smirk creeps across my lips. I picture Coach Schwarz in the stands, scolding me like he does before every race.

“Morgan, switch your damn feet, and space out your blocks more!”

My left knee digs into the rubbery Tartan Track. I focus on the connection of my damp skin against the hot track below. I say a silent prayer, thanking it for supporting my feet and body race after race.

Then, one last breath. I position my fingers behind the white line and await my next command.

“Set!” booms the Starter’s robotic voice over the loudspeaker.

My hips shoot straight up. Fire replaces my blood, surging through my veins.

BANG!

The starting gun reverberates through me.

I push out of the blocks, careful not to go out too hard in the first 200 meters. Keeping my eyes glued straight ahead, I don’t allow my opponents to bait me. Instead, I wait for my time. I stick close to the pack until I see my sweet spot ahead.

“Kick. Kick. Kick.” The words play like a mantra in my head as I round the second curve of the track. My body is weightless. My brain needs no prompting as it propels my legs forward. My feet become lighter, and my spikes barely touch the track before shooting forward for my next stride.

My arms pump harder as I enter my part of the race. The part in which I shine, the part I relish. The finish line is just ahead. Movement on my right enters my peripheral vision. I feel Sammy closing in. She’s right on my tail.

Author Bio:

Ashlynn Cubbison is a goal-oriented, driven woman, who owns and operates four companies with her husband. They have two beautiful sons together, and although her life is chaotic, fun, full of love and never the same each day, somehow she finds room for writing as well.

Growing up Ashlynn struggled with reading. Then, in her sophomore year of high school, a small seed was planted. After acing a literary test, her teacher looked her square in the eye and said “you’ve been selling yourself short all year. I wonder what you could achieve with some effort.” After delving deeper into books, she discovered Pride and Prejudice, and has been an obsessive reader ever since.

Eventually her love of books translated into writing. She hopes to inspire others, especially children, to find their passion as she did.

Once they got into the car Julie pulled out her phone.

“Thanks for keeping him distracted.”

Julie pulled up selfies of her sprawled out across a huge bed in various poses.

“What are you, twelve? I can’t believe you did that. I am so embarrassed.”

“Relax, he didn’t catch me and there was no way I would ever get a chance like that again. I’m spending the night at your place. We can take the dresses back to Rent the Runway in the morning before your gran’s plane comes in. I’ve got my keys, let’s stop by the market on the way up and grab some snacks. Your gran never has decent junk food and you need junk food to talk to hot guys… like our host that couldn’t take his eyes off you. I told you that dress was rockin’…you’re welcome.”

BOOK REVIEW: “Ugly Beautiful Girl”

November 26, 2017 Leave a Comment

“Ugly Beautiful Girl” by Tracy Krimmer

Blurb: Nerd. Weird. Ugly. That’s me. And I don’t want it to be anymore.

Now is my time to make my mark on the world. My college roommate doesn’t make it easy. Neither does her brother, Jesse, but for completely different reasons. He makes me feel things I’ve never felt before.

Wanted. Important. Beautiful.

But we can’t be together because it isn’t real. Someone like him could never fall for someone like me. We aren’t meant to fit together.

Even if I fall apart without him.

My Review: At some point in our lives, I think it’s safe to say that we can all relate to Violet. We’ve not all been the funny or popular one, nor the pretty or beautiful one. Not only life, but people can be cruel.

While Violet might have it all on paper (brains), that is hardly what people see on the outside. Jesse is the one who makes her feel beautiful, and I liked his caring ways, but his sister, Olivia, made me cringe. I wish she’d just mind her own business and not bother them, and especially make Violet’s life any more miserable. Also, at times, it seemed like Olivia was very jealous of Violet and the time she spent with Jesse. (I could understand the protectiveness, but not the jealousy).

Not only did I feel that it was Olivia who tortured Violet, but her mother, too, which I found sad. However, I was so glad that she could rely on her father, who seemed to have a caring soul.

My only issue was that it wasn’t as lifting as I’d hoped. While “Ugly Beautiful Girl” was a heart-wrenching read, Tracy Krimmer wrote this book beautifully.

I give “Ugly Beautiful Girl” 4 stars!

BOOK REVIEW: “Kim vs. the Mean Girl”

April 27, 2017 1 Comment

“Kim vs. the Mean Girl” by Meredith Schorr

Blurb: High school sophomore, Kim Long, is no stranger to the “mean girl” antics of Queen Bee Hannah Marshak. When Hannah steals Kim’s diary and in front of the entire class reads personal (not to mention humiliating) entries Kim wrote about her crush, Jonathan, Kim vows to enact revenge.

Kim and her loyal best friend, Bridget, come up with the perfect plan to put the evil Hannah in her place once and for all. But will their scheming have the desired effect of getting even, or will Hannah emerge more celebrated by her peers than ever?
Kim vs. the Mean Girl can be read as a young adult standalone novel, set in 2000, but is also a prequel to the popular Blogger Girl adult romantic comedy series. Told in the dual perspectives of teenage Kim and Hannah, fans of the series will get an inside look into Kim’s early passion for reading, writing (and Jonathan), and find out why Hannah is so darn mean.

In Blogger Girl we meet the irrepressible Kim Long and her nemesis Hannah Marshak. Kim vs. the Mean Girl takes us back
to high school with Kim and Hannah 101 in this delightful prequel. I gobbled it up in one byte…er, I mean bite (this is the era before a cell phone was in every backpack). When Kim declares war on Hannah, it takes some unexpected, and at times amusing, turns, and though the enemies don’t emerge as friends, or even frenemies, they each come away the better for it. A fun read for all ages. — Eileen Goudge, New York Times bestselling author.

My Review: I loved “Blogger Girl,” so when I heard that it was getting a prequel, I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to read it. Well, “Kim vs. the Mean Girl” was everything I hoped it would be…and more!

From the beginning, I was so excited to be reacquainted with Kim and Bridget–and even Hannah (I loved how we got to her younger self’s POV, and, oddly enough, at times, I felt sorry for her). While I don’t read the YA genre, this one didn’t like one but rather more like a prologue. As I mentioned my love for “Blogger Girl,” it makes me want to read it again, especially now that I know more about their teenage years. Whether or not you read “Kim vs. the Mean Girl” before or after “Blogger Girl,” you will not be disappointed.

I give “Kim vs. the Mean Girl” 5 stars!

Deferred

“Deferred” by Tiffany Romigh

Blurb: Sheltered, 17-year old MEZZANINE PARKER has never been allowed to make any decisions for herself.  And now that she’s freshly graduated from high school, instead of going to the college that everyone in her family has attended, she wants nothing more than to  show everyone that she can become a success in the place of her dreams, New York City.

To show Mezzanine how unprepared she is, her controlling parents go out on an unexpected limb and allow her to defer college enrollment and give her a test in exchange for her freedom- a 12-month test of adulthood that they are certain that she will fail. By July 4, she must have and keep the following 3 things nailed down: a good job, an apartment that she pays for and an acceptable boyfriend…or she’ll be forced to come back to Texas, give up her dreams and go to college with a parentally planned curriculum and life to go with it.

CHAPTER TEASE

Mezzanine looked at the Mercedes-Benz symbol bruised into her back.

If it were only a few inches higher, my hair would cover it. Or if I’d been where I was supposed to be, I wouldn’t have to cover anything at all.

She swished her long, dark hair from side to side in the mirror, trying to see if there was any chance that the mark could be made invisible, but no matter what she did, it just looked like a bulls-eye with an arrow of infidelity shot right into the center. She took a long swig of last night’s champagne straight from the bottle, hoping that it would make her feel less guilty. Thank God I actually made it home alone. That part I remember, at least.

She looked at the clock. 3:14 p.m. Quinn wasn’t due to land that night at JFK until 6 p.m., and with a radio show to do as soon as he landed, he would arrive at the apartment at a bit after 8 o’clock if he didn’t have to sign autographs. That left her several hours to sleep, clean herself up and figure out what she was going to tell him about where she had been when he had tried, over and over again with no success, to track her down. And where had he been last night? Working. And trying to make sure that she was ok.

Her mind flashed to Francois laying her down on the hood of his shiny, silver car outside the St. Regis Hotel. So, so hot and so, so wrong. He doesn’t even know I’m only eighteen. Wait, he doesn’t even know very much English.

She walked over to her makeup kit and pulled out a foundation brush and some samples of a full-coverage under eye concealer that they’d been developing at work. Well, it’s worth a try. Let’s see if this baby really does what we say it does.Ten minutes later and still branded by the hood ornament, she flopped down onto the comforter. It was hopeless. I’m just going to have to come up with something else. Her mind drifted back to last night, the town cars rushing by her on the right as they headed toward Fifth Avenue, and Francois’ warmth melting into her as they kissed, over and over for hours until he picked her up and put her into the car. Sure, he was sexy and mysterious and a little dangerous, she thought, taking small sips of champagne with her shaking hands, but Quinn was….well, he was Quinn. And with every second she felt more and more guilty.

Feeling exposed, she grabbed a tiny, flimsy nightgown that did little to cover her tall, thin frame. I love him more than I’ve ever, ever loved anyone. I’d die if I lost him. And, I’d be deported. When did everything get so complicated? How did this happen? She could barely remember a time when things weren’t so crazily, dramatically intertwined. She was so lost in the folds of her own mini-drama that she didn’t notice the tall reflection in the mirror and the noise the suitcases made as they hit the floor with a bang.

I need to get it together, she thought. I can’t let him see me like this.

She jumped up, but it was too late. There Quinn stood, fully visible in the doorway with his mouth open and his eyes fixed on her bruise, the champagne bottle and the fact that she was still in bed in the afternoon. He had been watching her for what felt like hours and, try as he might, couldn’t hold his words in for another second. I don’t know who you are anymore, he thought.

“Mezzanine…” His eyes were watery.

She whipped her head around trying to cover her bare, exposed back, and she turned to face her adorable, faithful boyfriend who had come in early, especially to see her. Her mouth turned to barbed wire.

“…What in the world has happened to you?”
