You’ve written a book! Congratulations! “Now what?” You might ask. Why not try self-publishing?
Since having finished NaNoWriMo ten days ago I’ve done a lot of thinking about this book and am on the verge of beginning the process of self-publishing it. Isn’t that what everyone is doing these days? There are several book that I’ve read that have been self-published, Lisa Becker’s Click: An Online Love Story, for example. (I will even be reading and reviewing some within the next couple of weeks).
I have done some research about where to start, but the internet was way too overwhelming with websites coming at me like there was tomorrow. I had enough, so I went to B&N and bought THIS book. It seems to have the basics, what to do and how to start, through making a profit. If I do end up deciding to do this (maybe as a Christmas present to myself), I will share my experiences. Wish me luck!
Have any of you thought about self-publishing? Why, and/or why not?
Happy Friday y’all!
I’ve thought about self publishing, but I worry that if I did I would be so worried my work wouldn’t be good enough, so I am aiming for the security of a publisher taking me on, I guess because I figure if they like it, then it will hopefully do well. If I build up more courage I might though. Let me know when yours goes up and I’ll buy a copy, Always keen to read work by new authors.
Thanks for your comment. I use about my work not being good enough also, but since I’ve talked to so many new self-publishers, I’ve learned that it’s normal to feel that way. That’s awesome that you’re going for a publisher — that’s something I couldn’t do. Good luck to you!
Great post thanks. I really enjoyed it very much. You have a great blog here.
Love writing? We would love for you to join us!

Thanks so much!
Congratulations indeed!
Finishing that first draft is an exciting time. To answer you question, I have actually decided to self-publish as well. At least, that’s where I’m going to start, once I believe my book(s) is ready for publication, and I’ve had it/them edited, and so on. So, I’m not going to rush (I don’t think anyone should). But, I am going to take control of my own writing endeavors and career.
Actually, I wrote a post on my decision to self-publish about two months ago, or so – http://awomyn.wordpress.com/2011/09/16/why-i-think-ive-decided-to-selfindie-publish/
Good luck!! 🙂
Thanks so much for your comment!
I’m glad to see that someone else likes the idea of being in charge! How do you plan on editing? That’s my most difficult part.
Good luck to you!
Well, that’s the one area I REALLY don’t want to skimp on. So, I’m going to have a few writer-friends proofread and critique my manuscript, then I’m going to revise, edit, and proofread it myself (until my fingers bleed, no doubt, lol). And, finally, I’m going to have it professionally edited. And then I’ll have the writerly types do another proofread, just before publication.
Yeah, that can be a pretty big expense, but there are actually some very reasonably-priced freelance editors out there. And it will pay-off in the long run. You’ll get better reviews, be justified in charging accordingly for your ebook, have happier readers, and be able to take great pride and have the utmost confidence in your work. 🙂
Thanks! And, good luck to you as well!
I’ve been thinking more and more about that route these days and I don’t think of it as self-publishing, but more like the Indie musicians going out on their own first. I might try going through Kindle and try e-publishing first. Definitely keep us posted on your progress and I’ll let you know what I decide.
I am hooked on Isabella!
Thank you! 🙂
