BOOK REVIEW: “Little Gray Dress”

December 27, 2018 3 Comments

Little Gray Dress by Aimee Brown

Blurb: Emi Harrison has avoided her ex-fiance, Jack Cabot, for nearly two years. Her twin brother Evan’s wedding is about to end that streak. From bad bridesmaids’ dresses, a hyperactive sister-in-law, a mean girl with even meaner secrets, and too much to drink, nothing seems to go right for Emi, except when she’s wearing her little gray dress.

When she speed-walks into Liam Jaxon’s bar, things get more complicated. He’s gorgeous, southern, and has no past with Emi. He may be exactly what she needs to prove for the last time that she doesn’t need or want Jack!

Her favorite little gray dress has made an appearance at nearly every major event in Emi’s adult life. Will it make another grand appearance when she least expects it?

My Review: In need of something to read to take my mind off the stomach bug I had, I decided to download this book that had been on my iPad for a very long time. Not only was the timing right, but it was also just what my heart needed at the end of the year. My review of this sweet, heartfelt, funny, and delightful read was planned to be shared last week, but writing it was something I struggled with–and, no, it wasn’t because of the holidays. It was merely because I was found it hard to find the right words on how to convey my thoughts about this book.

It’s hard to believe Little Gray Dress was Aimee Brown’s debut novel. The writing was superb; the storyline was brilliant (even the surprising twists), and while I’m not one who rereads books, I could easily read this one and love it–if not more–again.

Every chick lit, contemporary romance, and women’s fiction fan needs to read this book. Not only will it make you hold your breath at some scenes, love to hate a specific character until the end (no spoilers), question where the story was going, make you crave more from one particular Hero-like character (no spoilers on this one either), it most-likely will make you cry ugly tears at the end, which I absolutely loved!

I give “Little Gray Dress” 5 stars…If I could give it 10, I would!

**Note: Little Gray Dress has been republished with a new publisher, new title, and new cover as “THE LUCKY DRESS.” Also, please note that Little Gray Dress is only now available in audiobook.

I’m Just Not Into You Kind of Books

March 1, 2014 4 Comments

I take my job seriously as a book reviewer. I love to read, which is one reason I’m picky about the books I accept to review (I’m still not taking review requests at this time). However, if you’ve made the cut and I have accepted your offer (either in the past or future), this is a good thing. It means that I’ve liked the storyline enough to move on to the next step, which is reading the book. There have been weekends that I’ve been trapped in a book and can’t get myself to come out, even for Mexican food and margaritas — my weakness. For most of the time, books like these will get a 4 or 5 star from me. It means that not only is the writing good, but so was the story line. I enjoyed the characters, and the book “spoke” to me, (yes, there is such thing).

However, if I’ve accepted to offer to read and review it and can’t get motivated to get through the first five chapters (I always give it five), it’s hard for me to want to give you a good review, even if I love you and another book you’ve written.

This leads me to think several things:

1) The book was “sold” to me wrong/false advertising

Believe it or not, your book might have been sold to me wrong. Whether or not you or your publicist email me asking if I’d review your book, selling it is to me is a big key. However, being honest about what your book is about is huge for me. If one says that it’s about “this,” but it ends up about being “that,” you’ve already lost me.

My advice: People want to read your book, so don’t sell your book saying it’s one thing when it’s really not.

2) It’s not my genre in which I read (chick lit and women’s fiction)

The big debate over whether the proper term is chick lit or women’s fiction still gets to me (in my mind, it will always be chick lit), but these days there is definite distinction about what types of books these are. These are the books with the pretty covers, the drama over something (examples: a new job or a relationship gone wrong, and overcoming those issues, so that the reader and your character(s) are satisfied with the happy ending).

My advice: Define the genre of your book. If you’re torn between two (or even three) go with what you really think, and don’t focus so much on getting your book out there to the wrong people. Like I said above, make sure you pick the right blogger/reviewer.

3) No matter how hard I want to like your book, I just can’t

Have you ever noticed that reading books are a lot like a relationship? As much as you want it to work out, sometimes you can’t force it. You might want it to work because you loved the author’s other book(s), but for some reason this one you just can’t get into, and that’s okay. Believe it or not, the author doesn’t want to waste your time with their book if you’re not liking it, mostly because they know the review won’t be so good. In this case, it’s better to contact the publicist or author, let them know your situation, and then offer to help them out by either featuring the book in a different way.

My advice: As a reviewer, be honest. As an author of a book that someone can’t get into, know that there are other reviewers out there who will be willing to read your book, and they will enjoy it, so don’t give up on “selling it right,” making sure that the book went to the right genre, and that if someone doesn’t like your book, it’s time to find someone who will.

COVER REVEAL – Zoey & The Moment Of Zen

September 3, 2013 2 Comments

I’m thrilled to share with you the cover of Cat Lavoie’s new book, “Zoey & The Moment Of Zen”! Since Cat’s debut novel, I’ve been a huge fan of hers, so I’m really looking forward to reading this one!

Zoey&theMomentofZenCover

Blurb: When coffee shop owner Zoey Everwood takes her obsession with ex-boyfriend Braden too far, everyone—except Zoey—is convinced a bit of fun in the sun at the Moment of Zen Wellness Resort will help her get over him once and for all.

But Zoey’s relaxing vacation turns out to be anything but peaceful when she meets Shane Lawson, a resort guest who bears a striking resemblance to Braden. And things get even more complicated when the resort’s owner starts spilling secrets about Zoey’s aunt Nessa, the woman who raised her. Add a snarky Wellness Coordinator and Nate Holmes—Shane’s grumpy friend—to the mix, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect tropical storm.

When Zoey comes back home with a new husband instead of tacky souvenirs, she must convince everyone she hasn’t completely lost her mind. As Zoey and Shane struggle to keep the magic alive outside the resort, Zoey discovers that she isn’t the only one having trouble letting go of the past. And when Nate drops a bombshell that changes everything, Zoey must decide if the old saying is true—what happens at the Moment of Zen stays at the Moment of Zen.

Book review of “Love in Translation”

“Love in Translation” by Sara Palacios

Book Description:

Still reeling from an unexpected breakup, Emily nurses her broken heart by spending time with her best friends and taking one-too-many vodka shots. After one long night, she takes a hard look inside herself and doesn’t like what she sees. She realizes that she has sacrificed too much in her failed relationships from the past and vows to never settle for anything less than almost-perfect again. As she picks up the pieces and regains her confidence, a sexy Spanish chef moves in across the hall and knocks her off her feet. What ensues is an unexpected and tantalizing affair that opens her eyes – and her heart – to a whole new world and leaves her feeling sexier than she has ever felt.  Emily finally sees how easy love is supposed to be. Is happily-ever-after actually possible? Just when she starts to think so, she realizes that sometimes life gets more complicated before it gets easier. And complicated is an understatement when Steven (her best and oldest friend in the world) confesses his love for her. Everything spirals out of control as Emily must make a choice between love and friendship, and in doing so, possibly risk it all.

LOVE IN TRANSLATION is a modern day love story about following your heart to unexpected places and taking chances in life … because sometimes you will find exactly what you are looking for.

My Review:

Before I singed up to be part of the CLP blog tour featuring Sara and her book, “Love in Translation,” I knew I wanted to read it.  I was curious as to who would Emily be with in the end, the Spanish-speaking chef or her male friend.

The first few pages had me hooked and right away I felt sorry for Emily, and how David broke her heart.  I loved how she handled the break up.  In some parts I found myself giggling because what woman doesn’t go off the deep end at some point of a break up and have too many drinks with friends?  It was during this part that I bonded with her and cheered her on as she proceeded to get over her ex.  When Emily meets the handsome chef fireworks went off and it was easy to see that there was an instant connection between these two, even though he barely spoke English.  It was fun to see how they got along without talking…However, when Steven comes into the picture, there was an undeniable connection between them and I liked him too.  I liked his character and his and Sara’s friendly but flirty banter.

All the characters were likable, especially Emily.  She wasn’t your typical girly girl either, and she knew what she wanted and what she didn’t, (including who she wanted), and for that I liked the book more.  I would have enjoyed seeing more of Emily’s day-to-day life, but it was nice to see what her family life was like, especially her relationship with her parents.

As for how the book ended and without spoiling the ending, “Love in Translation” ended the right way, especially after a certain event…(no, I’m not going to spoil it for you).

Sara’s light writing style made “Love in Translation” a fun and quick read.  It’s surprising that it’s her debut novel, but I know it won’t be her last.  She’s a talented writer and I can’t wait to read more from Sara Palacios!

I give this book 4 stars!

Interview with the author, Sara Palacios

SaraPalaciosAbout Sara:  Sara Palacios is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a major in Advertising and a minor in English Literature. It was during her time in college that she really fell in love with the written word and ventured into writing her own stories. In addition to writing, Sara spends a majority of her time reading the works of other authors. She reads most genres – but thoroughly enjoys chick-lit, women’s and historical fiction. When she isn’t busy reading or writing, Sara enjoys spending time with family and friends. She is happily married, the owner of two precious doggies and a new mom to a handsome baby boy. Sara is also an avid animal-lover, runner, yoga enthusiast and wannabe vegan.

What made you want to write a book?  I’ve always been a big fan of writing and after dabbling in it for a while, I finally decided that I wanted to write a book. So, here I am! 🙂

What is your favorite thing to snack on while working?  I am not a big snacker while I write but I do enjoy drinking a rather large glass of red wine – especially if I find myself writing late into the night.

Walk us through a day in your life:  Is this an ideal day? Or a typical day? Let’s go with an ideal day … I typically wake up at 5 and try to get in a work out of some sort then I shower, get ready for work and then wake up the little man so we can leave for daycare. I typically drop him off at 7 am and then I am off to my day job at an accounting firm. I work until about 4, go and pick up my husband (we carpool to work)  and then swing by and pick up Ethan. We eat dinner fairly early and then have family time, whether that entail going for a walk, hanging out and reading books, or play time – it varies by day. Then Ethan goes to sleep (usually around 7-7:30 pm) and that is typically when I read/write and then go to sleep. As you can see, nothing terribly exciting.

If you weren’t an author, what would you be?  I currently work in accounting but if I could pick anything besides writing, I would love to be a yoga teacher or a pastry chef. I’ve been brainstorming ways to incorporate the two.

What do you love most about the Chick Lit genre?  I love how fun it is. It seems like every book is realistic and could be something that has happened to me or one of my girlfriends.

Are you motivated by music and/or movies?  I am such a movie buff. I love romantic comedies!

What is the writing/editing/publishing like for you?  I really enjoy the creativity that goes into the writing aspect but I am not a big fan of the editing process. Luckily I have two very awesome editors on my side who help me out along the way.

Describe your perfect day:  I would love to wake up in a gorgeous house in the snowy mountains and be greeted by my husband and son (and our two dogs). Then I would eat some fresh cinnamon rolls with nuts, a scrumptious bowl of berries and a big cup of coffee. Then I would spend the day on the mountains skiing and then head home, eat a delicious meal (either Italian or Tex-Mex) and then spend some time reading my latest book, which has just landed at #1 on the New York Times bestsellers list. Then snuggle up in the hot tub with my husband and a glass of Merlot.

How has the social media helped your career as an author?  It’s been amazing. I have met so many wonderful people and I an inspired by so many of them.

Team Angelina or Team Jen?  Is this even a question? Team Jen all the way.

What are three things people would be surprised to know about you?  I am a vegetarian. I absolutely HATE the beach. My birthmark is a silver streak that resides in my hair.

Can you tell us about any of your upcoming projects?  I am currently working on my next book. I don’t want to reveal too much because some of it might change but it will be a love story with a blast-from-the-past mixed in.

The Green Ticket

Book review of “The Green Ticket”

TheGreenTicketCoverPic

“The Green Ticket” by Samantha March

When Alex, a junior in college, gets her “dream job” as a manager at Blissful, a thriving salon and spa, she’s excited and willing to finally have an adult job.  Alex is ready to start a busy life of scheduling appointments for customers and employees, coming up with marketing and advertising plans, along with getting special attention from her bosses (Kevin and Dani, a married couple), all while trying to still have enough time for her friends and boyfriend.

Her life at Blissful was hardly what she expected.  Trying to keep her male boss’s affairs a secret from his wife, who she’s become friends with, along with trying to watch over the rest of the employees, Alex goes home each night exhausted and her mind reeling with emotions.  When Alex begins to receive hefty checks from Kevin to keep his secrets, she’s her morals are weighed.  Will she take the money and keep quiet, or will her better judgement get the best of her and realize that having it all doesn’t really mean that life really is greener (or wealthier) on the other side?  Alex’s character is put difficult situations — her male boss is a cheater and she sees her best friend trying to achieve goals of her own.

I really loved the plot of this book and was eager to see how it would turn out, especially with all that the main character is up against.  This book was a quick read that had me wondering what would happen each chapter.  It isn’t until something shocking (though somehow it fits this character) does Alex realize what I think Alex knew to do all along.  I loved how there was no blah part of the book and I wasn’t reading anything that didn’t involve the book.  The end of “The Green Ticket” surprised me a bit, though in a good way and I think it ended as it should have.  Whew, thank goodness!  I’d love for there to be a continuation, maybe where Alex is in two, three or five years from the end of where the book ended.

This was easily one of the top three books I’ve read of 2012 and I give it 5 out of 5 stars!

Breaking the Rules

Book review for “Breaking the Rules”

“Breaking the Rules” by Cat Lavoie

When Roxy Rule’s best friend and roommate, Ollie, gets a new job in England she’s happy for him.  Nothing will change, she tells herself.  When the two share a kiss right before he leaves, it catches Roxy by complete surprise.  After revealing what happened to their friends, not bothering to mention it to her fiance (because it didn’t mean anything, right?), she decides to ignore it and move on with her hectic life as an assistant for “boss who makes her want to stab herself with a letter opener.”  Not only does Roxy have to deal with her boss, Roxy’s sisters move in with her (one sister is pregnant and one who’s in a premature midlife crisis), which creates even more havoc on her life.  Arguing with her fiance about her never-ending credit card balance due to buying kitchen supplies that she can’t live without, and dealing with the drama in her life, Roxy puts her dream about being a chef on the back burner.

What will Roxy do when she can no longer put up with her fiance and his overbearing mother?  Will Roxy help her boss out when she needs her most?  Most of all, what will Roxy do when she finds some news that changes everything?

A few months ago I decided that I wouldn’t be taking anymore request until after the year so that I could focus on my own books.  When I received an email from Samantha of Marching Ink asking me to read and review Breaking the Rules, I read synopsis and knew immediately that I had to read the debut novel by Cat Lavoie!  It seemed like it would be a great Chick Lit read, and seemed not too far off about a friendship when I had when I was younger.

From the first sentence to the last period, Breaking the rules was a delight to read!  I read it in three days and loved the characters, especially Rox!  She had me laughing the whole time, and though I was a little nervous about what she would say and do in certain situations, she didn’t let me down — especially in the end!   (Read the book to find why I was on the edge of my seat).  As for Roxy’s fiance, his behavior and words really annoyed me, but I understood that by the end.  I enjoyed Roxy’s sisters’ characters.  While all the sisters were dealing with their own personal drama, I liked how they came together when it was needed.  Last, but not least, there’s Ollie who I liked a lot, but wished there would’ve been more of him, maybe by emails or phone calls just to keep him more involved with Roxy.

There were a lot of twists and turns and I liked that.  There was nothing that the brilliant author hadn’t explained or make the reader wonder.

Overall, I LOVED this book!  If you’re wanting to read a fun and entertaining book about family, love, and relationships, then Breaking the Rules is the book for you!

I give this book 5 stars!

Fatty Patty

Book Review for “Fatty Patty”

“Fatty Patty” by Kathleen Irene Paterka

Well liked, beloved friend, sister and fifth grade teacher, Patty Perreault is up for Teacher of the Year.  While her “kids” mean everything to her and she loves her job (with the exception of a certain few kids in her class), she’s set on losing weight because she’s worried they won’t pick her for Teacher of the Year because of her weight.  She’s determined and ready to start losing weight, but along the way endures internal and relationship struggles.

First there’s Sam Curtis, who she meets while swimming laps.  As their friendship grows when he offers his expertise on her finances.  While she thinks he’s a nice guy, she can’t see him as anything more than just a friend — because he’s overweight.  Then comes Nick Lamont, a handsome coworker who she’d give up anything for, but there might be more to him than she thinks or wants to admit.  What will “Fatty Patty” do?  Will she let the handsome man walk all over her, or will she stand her ground and see that it’s what’s on the inside that matters the most?

When I decided to be part of the “Fatty Patty” tour, I took part because I loved the cover.  Yes, the cover did sway me, but after reading the first chapter, I was hooked all the way to the end!  From the beginning I was a huge fan of Patty.  I liked the way she took charge of her weight and began swimming laps.  I also liked how her sister stood by her, supporting her in each way, sometimes even hiding food from her when need be.  Their relationship swayed a little bit, but that was understood, too.  I would’ve liked more between them as far as being honest with each other, especially on Patty’s part.  She should’ve said what she thought more, rather than what she thought.

As for her romantic life, I liked both Sam and Nick.  Sam was the one with the heart and Nick was the one with the good looks…(No, I’m not going to spoil it for you!  Read the book!)

Books about “fat” characters can be a touchy subject, but Kathleen Irene Paterka created “Fatty Patty” in a brilliant way.  I loved Patty’s character and think that any woman at any size will, too.

Overall, I think that Kathleen has written a wonderful and heartwarming book about weight, finding yourself and about falling in love.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars!

About the author:

Kathleen Irene Paterka fell in love with writing (and food) at a very young age. By the time she graduated high school, she’d completed her first manuscript and she weighed 300 lbs. Though the extra pounds have long since disappeared, Kathleen still carries the emotional scars of being a former fatty. FATTY PATTY was born from the cruel teasing she endured on the school playground. Kathleen is the author of numerous novels which embrace universal themes of home, family life and love, including the Women’s Fiction series, “The James Bay Novels”. Kathleen is the resident staff writer for Castle Farms, a world renowned castle listed on the National Historic Register, and co-author of the non-fiction book FOR THE LOVE OF A CASTLE, published in 2012. Having lived and studied abroad, Kathleen’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Michigan University. She and her husband live in the beautiful north country of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Kathleen loves hearing from readers.

Viewer Discretion Advised

Book Review for “Viewer Discretion Advised”

“Viewer Discretion Advised” by Cindy Roesel

When Charlene (Charley) gets fired from her job and moves to Miami to work as a news director at a local television station, she’s up for the challenge.  She soon realizes that her boss, Jonathan Lefton, will go to any extreme to get good ratings – no matter what.  After nude pictures are found of a female coworker, that’s just the beginning of her problems.  After meeting a very dirty cop who pulls her over, her life is turned upside down even more so!  Risking ratings for her show, will Charley risk her life to expose a crime or will she save a relationship with the one she’s sleeping with?

“Viewer Discretion Advised” was a quick read that was filled with TV drama, giving us a clear view of what it’d be like working in newscaster business!  Charley, Oz, the dirty cop, John, and Jonathan all played wonderful characters that kept the reader hanging.

I liked how Cindy’s writing was fast and quick, and there was action on each page.  She did a great job of defining characters, giving them have their own personality.  Though, I had a hard time defining between John and Jonathan (Lefton).  While their names weren’t the same and they had different personas, I would’ve made their names less similar.  I wasn’t really taken with Charley’s character, nor did I believe the way felt about her job or her friends, or especially her relationship with Oz.  As for the book seeming real, I believe it — news is everywhere!  There were also quite a few random sentences that just popped up out of nowhere and I had to reread the sentence (sometimes the paragraph) over again that didn’t make sense.

**POSSIBLE ENDING SPOILER BELOW**

Overall, I think that Cindy Roesel has nailed it by writing a book that gives us a reality into the life of what it’s like to be in the news industry.  There were parts that were funny, which gave off a lighthearted feel to the reader.  I give her a lot of credit for keeping me interested to see what Charley does, though would’ve liked to know the details about her job at the end and what’s said between her, Jonathan, and/or the other characters.

I give this book 3 1/2 out of 5 stars!

About the author:

Cindy Roesel is an Emmy Award winning television broadcast journalist. After working for twenty years in newsrooms filled with ambitious backbiting adrenalin junkies, she’s turning her experiences into novels.  Cindy lives in Miami with her shih tzu, Sassy.
