“From Paris with Love” by Samantha Tonge

**This is a sequel of “Doubting Abbey**

Blurb:

Every girl dreams of hearing those four magical words Will you marry me? But no-one tells you what’s supposed to happen next….

Fun-loving Gemma Goodwin knows she should be revelling in her happy-ever-after. Except when her boyfriend Lord Edward popped the question, after a whirlwind romance, although she didn’t say no….she didn’t exactly say yes either!

A month-long cookery course in Paris could be just the place to make sure her heart and her head are on the same page…  And however disenchanted with romance Gemma is feeling, the City of Love has plenty to keep her busy; the champagne is decadently quaffable, the croissants almost too delicious, and shopping is a national past-time!  In fact, everything in Paris makes her want to say Je t’aime…. Except Edward!

But whilst Paris might offer plenty of distractions from wedding planning – including her new friends, mysterious Joe and hot  French rockstar Blade – there’s no reason she couldn’t just try one or two couture dresses is there? Just for fun…

“The Cleaning Agency” by Ayn Bootham

Blurb: Life can be messy sometimes.

Just how messy is something Eva Charles finds out when her husband flees the country with all of their money. Men in tight vests start making unannounced visits and the bank threatens to take her house.

She needs a plan. But for nine years she has raised children, scrubbed kitchens and removed stains from upholstery. What does that qualify her for? Starting up her own cleaning agency of course! But with a twist….Eva’s business is a naked cleaning agency with sexy girls offering all kinds of services…

With the help of a moody handyman, an attractive drug dealer and an eccentric neighbor, Eva tries to keep her life from spiraling out of control.

But she has to get her hands dirty, very dirty, to clean up the mess she is in.

* * * * *

Excerpt:

For nine years I was a typical suburban housewife, a car pool mom and dutiful wife, spending large parts of the day thinking about what to cook for dinner and where to plant my petunias. I was your basic law-abiding citizen who always got the books back to the library on time and who didn’t even break the speed limit when she was late for a doctor’s appointment.

Then I got one phone call and everything changed.

That was all it took.

One phone call.

It was the bank, informing me of unusual activity on our accounts.

It sounded like a joke. I mean, it had to be a joke. What did unusual activity mean? I tried to think of what I had been buying lately, if I had gone overboard with any retail therapy.

But the bank was not worried by a few big purchases. The bank was concerned about several extremely large withdrawals. I was on the line with an accounts manager or a client liaison person, something like that. I hadn’t really paid attention to anything she said on the phone until she told me that our money was gone.

All of it.

Then she really had my attention.

“But we have overdrafts,” I replied, slowly.

“Well, yes”, she said, kindly. “But these have now also been exhausted.”

Destination Wedding

“Destination Wedding” by Deanna Lynn Sletten

Blurb: Life is full of surprises…

Claire Martin’s life is perfect, or at least she tells herself it is. She owns a successful clothing boutique, has a steady, dependable boyfriend, and a beautiful grown daughter who is about to be married. Sure, Claire’s husband of twenty years left her for a younger woman four years ago, but that is all in the past. Now, Claire is looking forward to her daughter’s Bahama wedding and spending a week in paradise. The only thing Claire dreads is her ex-husband and his wife will also be on the island. Claire is determined to make the best of it, though. What Claire doesn’t realize is ignoring her ex-husband for the week is going to be impossible.

James Martin’s life is a mess. His wife of less than four years has made him the most miserable man on earth and now they are in the middle of a messy divorce. He’s happy that he can forget her for a week as he goes off to the Bahamas to attend his lovely daughter’s wedding. Jim is embarrassed to admit to his daughter and his ex-wife, Claire, that he made the biggest mistake of his life when he left her for another woman, so he makes up a story as to why his new wife didn’t come along. When he and Claire are unexpectedly forced upon each other, Jim soon realizes what he’s lost and he begins to wonder if he can find a way back into Claire’s heart.

My Review:

When I first saw the cover of “Destination Wedding,” I knew I had to read it. After I finished the first chapter, I was instantly hooked on Claire’s story, and I was curious as to how it would play out. I really like Claire’s character, but at times I thought she was a little wishy-washy, especially when it came down to dealing with Jim and Steven. However, the more the story progressed, I understood why she was that way. I even felt a little sorry for her. For a cheating ex-husband, I enjoyed Jim’s character, too. He knew he messed up, and it was kind of nice to see how, and if he could, win Claire’s heart again. As for Steven, the moment he was introduced, I didn’t like him, but I’m thinking that was the point.

From Claire and Jim’s sleeping arrangements to a few revelations, it was quite comical to see Claire and Jim get along after all they’ve been through. Another thing I liked was how the author gave mystery at the end, I’m happy to say that I think Claire made the right decision. No, no spoilers. 🙂

Overall, this book was a wonderful, quick read. If you’re looking for a quick page-turner to read this summer, I recommend “Destination Wedding”.

I give “Destination Wedding” 5 stars!

Excerpt:

They all walked down to the dock and that was when Claire noticed Jim for the first time. He came bounding down to the dock and wrapped Mandy into a big bear hug.

“Dad! Finally,” Mandy squealed. Father and daughter hugged, which made Claire’s heart swell. True, she wasn’t thrilled he was here, but she was happy he was here for Mandy.

As they hugged, Claire discretely looked around for Diane. Claire wondered where she was hiding.

“Hello, Claire,” Jim said, coming up beside her. They hugged awkwardly, more for show than from affection. Claire felt how solid and in shape he was.

“Hi, Jim,” was all Claire managed to say.

Jim went around the group saying hello, shaking hands with Craig and his parents, and giving out hugs to Lisa and Kaylie. Glen slapped him on the back as a good natured greeting.

“So, old man, how are you doing?” Glen asked. Both men were of almost equal height and equal age and both had easy-going personalities. When they were married, Claire and Jim had always had a fun time visiting with Glen and Lisa.

“Old man, eh?” Jim replied, grinning at Glen. “You’re just as old as I am, so watch it.”

Claire frowned as she watched the two men interact. She suddenly realized just how much she missed family get-togethers like this, and it made her sad that they weren’t the same anymore since the divorce.

“Just like old times, isn’t it?” Lisa said to Claire as she came up beside her.

Claire smiled over at her sister-in-law. Lisa was the same height at Claire, but her hair was dark brown and cut at chin length for ease of style. Lisa lived the San Diego lifestyle to the fullest when she wasn’t working as a paralegal in a law firm. She ran every day and played tennis and surfed. Her lean, muscular body showed how much work she put into it.

“Yep. Just like old times,” Claire said, wrapping her arm around Lisa’s waist in a hug.

A ferry worker announced that they’d be leaving in five minutes. The wedding group came together at the end of the dock to board.

“Daddy? Where’s Diane?” Mandy called out to her father. Claire looked up in time to see an odd look cross Jim’s face. He walked over closer to Mandy. Claire inched over toward them to hear what he was saying.

“I’m sorry, honey, but she decided not to come,” Jim told her quietly.

Claire almost clapped her hands in delight, but then decided that wouldn’t be appropriate and stayed still.

“Why not?” Mandy asked, apparently not willing to let the subject go.

Jim took a deep breath. “Well, sweetie, I just think she didn’t feel comfortable spending an entire week with our family.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Mandy shot back. “We’ve done everything possible to make her feel welcome. What more does she want?”

Jim stepped closer to Mandy. “Don’t let it upset you, dear. It’s not about you, believe me. Let’s not let her ruin our good time here, okay?”

Mandy nodded then turned toward Craig and walked away. It was obvious she wasn’t happy with this new development. Claire understood how she felt. After all, everyone, Claire included, had been kind to Diane despite the situation. How dare Diane act as if she were the persecuted one.

Jim just stood there, looking lost. For some unknown reason, Claire felt badly for him. She walked over and spoke quietly. “I’m sorry Diane isn’t coming.”

Jim turned to Claire and tossed her one of his rakish grins. “Are you? Really?” he asked. Then he winked, turned, and followed behind Mandy and the rest of the group.

Anger rose inside of Claire. Here she was, trying to be nice, and he had the nerve to question her sincerity. And with that damn grin of his. No man, especially one his age, had the right to look so damn cute when he was pissing her off. He was intolerable.

A Book Cover Reveal & Re-release!

July 24, 2014 Leave a Comment

One of my favorite things to post are book cover reveals, so I’m really excited to share with you the following cover. Hilary Grossman is re-releasing her book “Dangled Carat” through BookTrope, (congratulations!). A few months ago, I got the chance to read “Dangled Carat,” , and I loved it, (click HERE to read my review). While I liked the original cover, the new one screams chick lit, and makes the readers want to buy this book!

Do, without further ado…here’s the beautiful new cover…

DangledCarat-New

Blurb:

For every girl who wondered if she should love him or dump him…..

For every girl who listened to her heart instead of her friends advice….

For every girl who l wondered if she was wasting her time dating that guy….

meet Hilary….

She had gotten used to dating the commitment-phobic Marc, thirteen years her senior. They had a great relationship–why rush into things? She saw no need to pressure him for marriage, believing that when the time was right, he would propose. But after they had been together for four years, their friends decided to take matters into their own hands, pushing Marc to propose and making Hilary realize how much she really did want to marry the man that she loved. Unfortunately, Marc still wasn’t ready–and their friends’ meddling in the form of a faux engagement party led to a disastrous New Year’s Eve that brought their relationship to an inevitable turning point.

For anyone who has ever dated a commitment-phobe, who has found their patience wearing thin with the one they love, or who has sat around wondering if he is ever going to pop the question while trying to remain the very picture of patience and grace, Hilary’s humorous and honest story will hit home.

Keeping An Author’s Mind Healthy

June 19, 2014 5 Comments

“You get paid to make stuff up,” said my dad, over Father’s Day weekend. I laughed at his comment, but the more I thought about, the more I came to realize he was right, and that I’d never thought about it that way. No matter how little or how much, authors do get paid to make things up. (If you ask me, that’s pretty cool).

So, yesterday I stumbled upon THIS article about staying healthy in order for you to write better, and it energized me to start keeping my mind clear–you know, the one I’m paid to make stuff up with. It’s not about being physically fit, but rather keeping your mind healthy.

For a few months now, my mind has felt like it’s been in a bubble that just won’t burst, and it’s been very stressful. I’ve had all these ideas for my second draft of “Cards From Khloe’s Flower Shop,” and haven been eager to get back to it, but feeling the way I have, it’s been impossible to get any progress made. Also, some of you might also know that I’ve been experiencing vertigo, which has also been stressful, but I’m on day four of not having any dizziness, so I’m hoping it’s finally going away–YAY!

Now that I’m feeling a more like myself, I’d like to share just a few tips that I do to keep my mind healthy:

WALK/RUN ON A TREADMILL: Before I started experiencing vertigo, I was a walker. I loved being on my treadmill. Not only did it often help writer’s block disappear, it helped keep my mind energized. My mind would be clear, and I would be focused on nothing but my steady pace. However, on days where I felt really energized, I’d speed it up a bit, which made my workout even better. Not only was I burning calories, I was feeling motivated to get back to my characters.

Not only can walking rejuvenate your mind, you’ll begin to look better, too!

DRINK MORE WATER: I’ve tried to like water, and do off and on, but I’m not consistent as I should be with it. So, to spark up the taste a bit, I add drops of lemon or limes to it, which gives it a refreshing spin. You can also buy Dasani Drops, which come in all different flavors, (my favorite is the Pineapple Coconut). I try to drink at least six cups a day–yes, I know I should drink the typical 8, but I’m trying to get better at this.

Chug-a-lug!

TRY SOMETHING YOU’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE: So, today I did something I thought I’d never do. I had my first Pilates session, (yes, you read that right). My husband has been going for over a year now, and he loves it. Finally agreeing, a few weeks ago, I went to go see him during a session, and I was really impressed. He’s been telling me to at least give it a try for so long, but I’d alway find an excuse, but he was right (yes, I just wrote for the world that he was right…Shh, I hope he’s not reading this!). Anyway, for sixty minutes, I was able to relax, breathe and do the stretches/movements without focusing on sales for my book and work on a scene I’m having trouble with at the moment, and solely let my mind go. In a way, it was euphoric, and I cannot wait to go back.

By trying something new, and giving it your best, you’ll be glad you did!

Magic in Dixie

MagicInDixieCoverPic

“Magic in Dixie” by Beth Albright, (the first book in a new southern series)

Blurb:

“Honey, there are secrets in this town for sure but I couldn’t believe there were so many– all buried in one family. And of all places to start digging them up—a funeral.” ~Vivi McFadden Heart

“I was born into a house full of secrets and bad behavior.”

Rhonda Cartwright Bently is having the most important moment of her life. She has finally been asked to help cater the Governor’s ball at the Emmy Awards in LA— But before the big day she has to get home to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and bury her estranged father. What she discovers in the aftermath of the funeral turns her life upside down in a matter of seconds.

A gift from her father from the grave—a dilapidated southern mansion with an old trunk full of family secrets, will transform Rhonda’s life in an instant and make her question everything she’s ever believed about her family and herself. And then there’s that list–the one she made about her dream man when she was just a teenager. Her perfect love may be right here under her nose, but for Rhonda this is one last complication she could do without. She intended to get home, bury Daddy, sell that dilapidated monstrosity and get back to LA, as fast as she could. But plans never quite work out just as we hope.

Rhonda will have to call on her old BFF’s, Blake and Vivi, to help solve the family mystery. But what those original Sassy Belles finally create out of that pile of dust could change Rhonda’s life for good, make her Hollywood dreams fade to black, and maybe even help her uncover her heart right where she left it—in Dixie. But sometimes things aren’t as they seem. And people aren’t always who we think they are.

Beth Albright is at her southern best with this new series of sexy romance, laugh out loud comedy, and edge-of-your-seat mystery—exactly what we have come to love in the Beth Albright brand! So grab your girlfriends and put on your seatbelts for this one–  an exciting, unpredictable joy ride though the Deep South that will keep you guessing until the final shocking pages.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

“ Honey, there are secrets in this town for sure but I can’t believe there were so many– all buried in one family. And of all places to start digging them up—a funeral!” ~Vivi McFadden Heart

*                                               *                                           *

I was born into a house full of secrets and bad behavior. Not the kind of secrets you whisper to your best friend in a musty third grade classroom. No, these were the kind that only grown-ups kept. And the bad behavior wasn’t the fun kind like when I would slither out the back door to make out with my cutie-pie boyfriend on a humid sultry summer night down south. Ooh, thinking of those kisses still gives me shivers down my spine.

No, the sneaky little rituals of my mother would hang in the air clinging to her thick perfume as she would sometimes leave us in the wee hours while daddy was softly snoring. I, however, was always awake and never missed the click of her heels as she tried to tiptoe across the hardwood floors and out the front door, slowly turning the lock with a jingle of her keys from the other side. I could hear everything.

As a child I remember hearing whispers that would suddenly stop mid-sentence when I appeared. My sisters and I just thought it was the way grown-ups talked. But I always wondered what they were talking about and or giggling over as they swigged their pungent mid-day concoction, the murmurs and hushed tones   echoing from behind closed doors. Mother and her best girlfriend, Martha Cox, would be sipping martinis at lunch and smoking Pall Malls held in those long black Hollywood cigarette holders like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

I remember hearing my mother on the phone, late at night, giggling from a closet where she had stretched the curly telephone cord all the way from the kitchen wall to the coat closet halfway down the hall, pulling it taut behind the closed door. I could never make out just what she was saying. But I knew she sure didn’t want anyone else to hear her.

This is always the way I remember growing up in our strange little family. So different, I thought, from the other families at the dead end of Camellia Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That’s why in the late afternoon on that hot August day when my cell phone rang, I somehow knew all those secrets were fixin’ to be buried forever with my father. Finally, maybe we could be a normal family. But then I always was a dreamer.

That day my sister was calling to tell me Daddy had just died. I couldn’t quite arrange my emotions in my body as they swirled into a recipe of sadness, relief, ambivalence and then guilt. I sat down on the side of my bed in Los Angeles and tried to feel something but the tears wouldn’t flow. I squinted hard and clutched my heart but still nothing. My father hadn’t spoken to me in years. So I just sat there in my soup of emotions, confused and empty with no release.

But wouldn’t you know it? Just as we began to cover my daddy with the red dirt of the Deep South, I should have known my family would begin diggin’ things up. Family puzzles that would begin to rearrange our lives in ways we could have never dreamt.

“I can barely hear you Abigail!” The cell was cutting out. “I’m on my way to Tuscaloosa as we speak. Hell, LA isn’t just like I’m in Georgia. I’m all the way in freakin’ California. It’s gonna take me a minute or two to get all the way across the continent!” Abigail is my younger sister and has always been the bossy organized one.

The timing on this funeral actually couldn’t have been worse. Okay, I know Daddy didn’t plan to die right now but the Emmy Awards are next month. And it had taken me a really long time to start over and finally get a break. I’m sure I sound awful, you know, ‘cause I’m not havin’ a big ol’ fit and crying my eyes out but the thing is, Daddy chose not to speak to me for years, ever since I ran off to LA eighteen years ago with Jason—who is now my ex.

I could feel my walls literally start to rise up and shield me from the normal emotions I should have been experiencing. I had a lump in my throat and a twist in the pit of my stomach. But the thing is, I had a new life in LA, that’s Los Angeles, not Lower Alabama, and I needed to live this one– without all the hush- hush and drama of my childhood. And going home to pay my last respects to daddy and I knew surely I would have to deal with my Mother, Toots Harper Cartwright. Her real name is Teresa Margaret Harper. Toots was the nickname her Daddy gave her. She had a reputation in our family based on her initials, T.M.H.—Too Much Hell–which is what she gave everybody on a regular basis.

I dug through my closet in my Beverly Hills apartment, grabbed my bags and threw my suitcase on the bed in a frantic hurry, shoes and underwear flying everywhere. Well, it’s Beverly Hills adjacent, technically. Not actually Beverly Hills. Actually, I live over the Pizza store on Beverly Boulevard, across from CBS Television City—but it’s near the Farmers Market and that was the attraction, since I’m a chef. Okay, it’s on Beverly Boulevard, so I can say I live at least near Beverly Hills. It sounds better. And out here, image is everything.

I’m a caterer to the A-list crowd. Well, usually I assist events. This is the first time I have ever been asked to help cater the Emmys too and seriously, Daddy, The Emmys– this has to be the worst of all your many mistakes, I said to him looking up as if he could hear me from wherever he is in the hereafter.

BethAlbrightPic2**About author, Beth Albright:

Beth Albright is the author of the award-winning, best-selling series The Sassy Belles. After knowing Beth for just a few short seconds you are sure to learn she is from Alabama. No, its not the lilt of magnolia you can still catch in her voice, or even the way she lovingly describes her undying love for her famous alma mater’s football champions. She will tell you she loves Tuscaloosa, even after living quite literally all over the country. Though Beth has had a remarkable career, from New York City to Hollywood, and all points in between, she has never forgotten where she came from…and what she loves. That’s why when it came time to write, Beth had no choice but to write about Tuscaloosa and The University of Alabama, and all the quirky people she still calls family, though some do not actually share her bloodline!

Beth Albright has always been a storyteller. After spending nearly 15 years in talk radio, as a talk show host, playing the part of a principal character on the soap opera, DAYS OF OUR LIVES, owning her own acting school and children’s theater, and raising a son who was a nationally ranked figure skater, Beth has decided to return to her roots; storytelling. When she was in the sixth grade, her teacher gave her the floor every Friday to tell her stories. See, Beth was a talker, a future talk show host in the making, and she was sharing her stories so much that her teacher couldn’t teach. The teacher told 12 year old Beth if she would begin writing her stories down, she would be allowed time to share those stories with the class.

And she’s been writing, AND talking ever since. Beth has interviewed Bob Hope, Oprah Winfrey, Betty White, Wolfgang Puck and George Burns live from the Chinese Theatre, as well as numerous other celebrities, and authors. Then Beth became a principal character on Days of Our Lives. But through all of the excitement of talk shows and soap operas, Beth loved telling stories to her audience the most. With a degree in Journalism from her beloved University of Alabama, She always remains true to her roots, born and raised in Tuscaloosa, “My grandfather was the play by play announcer for the Crimson Tide in the 50s!” Beth will proudly tell you.   She is a down homespun girl, although she currently lives in San Francisco with her TV producer husband and her brilliant son. But her heart is always in Alabama.

The Glass Kitchen

TheGlassKitchenCoverPic

“The Glass Kitchen” by Linda Francis Lee

Blurb: Portia Cuthcart and her two sisters find their way from Texas to Manhattan over the years, the heiresses to a dilapidated brownstone on the Upper West Side. Portia is running from a bad divorce and the knowledge that she has always been a little bit different, a little bit strange: the talented cook who knew exactly what to serve on what occasion, even to the point of predicting events that hadn’t even happened yet. But she doesn’t cook anymore. She has tamped down this “knowing.” It has caused her way too many problems. When she meets twelve-year-old Ariel Kane, she sees a girl in desperate need of a mother and a family in dire need of fried chicken, biscuits, and strawberry rhubarb pie. Widowed Gabriel Kane has his hands full with two daughters on the cusp on womanhood, plus the Kane family have so many secrets and rivalries of their own. Ariel, especially, must find a way to bring them all together with the help of Portia: the non-cook, the non-believer in happy endings. Portia, who just might have to rethink the pages of her own story and take a few chances to claim what she wants deep down inside…

My Review: My original date for this review wasn’t supposed to be until July, but when I started this book on a lazy Friday night, I couldn’t put this book down, nor did I want to. I was quickly hooked by Portia’s “knowing” with food, wondering where it would take her along her journey.

I loved the characters that the author created, as they held my attention, and I couldn’t get enough of them. It’s obvious that Portia and Gabriel have chemistry from the moment they met, but it’s also easy to see that he tries his best to ignore it. To some, he might come off as a jerk, but after reading more about him and his past, it was easy to understand why he acts how he does. As for his daughter, Ariel, I loved her. She acts way beyond her years, but that’s something I liked about her, and it seemed to add mystery to the story, too.

As for the “knowing”, I found it to be a very refreshing storyline. Nothing in this book has been overused, nor have I read anything like it. “The Glass Kitchen” had it all — intrigue, romance, mystery, and a happy ending, (I even got a little sappy during the last chapter).

This is my first book to read by Linda Francis Lee, and it don’t be my last. If you’re looking for a page-turner, which would make for a great beach read, you will love this book.

I give “The Glass Kitchen” 5 stars!
