The Month of December

January 19, 2013 Leave a Comment

As some of you might know, I was planning to go on vacation with my hubby to Florida and stopping along the way.  I got sick with a really bad eye infection, so we had to cancel our trip, but came up with what I’m calling Plan-B!  We spent about six days at my family’s ranch doing nothing but relaxing and working very little.  Though my eye infection was very painful and annoying, I still had a very memorable time.  We came back home on our third wedding anniversary, December 12th!  I had a wonderful anniversary with my hubby, who made me a delicious meal, and we even drank champagne out of the flutes we had at our reception:

WeddingPicFave#2
True Love – 12/12/2009

Being a writer isn’t easy, but my hubby knows how hard I work, so for our anniversary, here are some really awesome writer gifts he gave me for our anniversary and for Christmas:

  • A waterproof iPad case!  This case is such an awesome gift!  Since reading is part of my job, it’s not always easy to take a book in the shower, especially since I prefer reading through eBooks for the books I review.  Since I have a ledge in the shower, I prop it up and start reading.  Since receiving this case, my showers have grown increasingly longer.  HERE is the link to the case if you’d like one, too.  Oh, and my hubby bought me the purple one — yay!
  • Writer shot glasses!  Enough said!  HERE is the link to purchase a set!
  • A paperback of Jane Eyrotica!  This was kind of a joke gift.  We were in a bookstore and he saw me flipping through it, which was in the comedy/joke section.  I think it’s based off of a “50 Shades of Grey.”  If you’re intrigued, HERE is the link to buy the book.
  • A picture of a red phone booth!  This was really special to me.  One of my best friends took this picture when he was in England.  Since Chick Lit began, or so they say, in England, it’s a constant reminder of what my goal is, to write Chick Lit!  I have yet to hang it in my office, which I’m hoping to do soon.
  • A writer quotation box!  I love this box and love the great writer quote by Hemingway!  HERE is the link to buy the awesome box!
  • The Breville One-Touch Tea Maker!  Since I drink tea instead of coffee, this tea-maker is my new love!  Buy it HERE!

As you can see, I had an amazing anniversary and a wonderful Christmas, even though plans changed.  I surprisingly enjoyed the time off.  I’m usually one who’s going and going, so it was nice to have most of the month of December off.  I encourage you to take time to not work as much and take time with your loved ones, as time is precious.

Now that it’s January, I’m ready to get back to work, enjoying life and not sweating the small stuff as much as I have.

Somewhere Down In Texas — Prologue

January 19, 2013 14 Comments

This is a prologue to my third book, “Somewhere Down In Texas.”  The following is a first draft and hasn’t been edited, so please ignore any mistakes.

*****

My graduation dinner with my granny ended early so I decided to surprise my boyfriend, Clay, at his house.  His parents were out of town and we were planning on spending the night in each other’s arms.  We had made love only a few times, but we had never just spent the night with each other.

His Chevrolet truck was in the driveway and I smiled, remembering all the fun and memorable times we shared in that old beat up thing.  After checking myself in the mirror and adding some lip gloss, I got out of my car, quietly closing the door on my new BMW convertible and walked up to the porch.  When I reached the knob, I slowly twisted it, opening the Dennis’ home.  They never locked their doors.  Hell, nobody did, in Amarillo, Texas.

When I didn’t see him watching the blaring television in the family room, I tiptoed into the kitchen.  There was no sight of him.  He must be in the bedroom, waiting for me, I thought, as I felt heat rush to my cheeks.  I walked down the dark hallway that was covered with pictures of Clay and his younger sister, Caroline.  His door was cracked, so I pushed it open.  What I saw was horrifying!  My high school sweetheart and my worst enemy, Lila, were in bed together.  The door banged against the wall, startling them, as they both jumped and faced me.  To my surprise, Clay just sat there, as Lila covered herself up with Clay’s sheets — the same light green sheets that I had been tangled up in after a passionate lovemaking session with “Amarillo’s Sexiest Cowboy,” quoting the magazine cover of The Amarillo Man.

“Addie!” Clay said, finally jumping out of bed and putting on his jeans.  “This isn’t what it looks like,” he said as he stumbled his way across the room towards me.

My eyes were filled with tears and I could barely speak.  “What…what is this?”  I looked at him and then at Lila, who looked pleased with herself for causing trouble.  I just stood there and glared at them, not knowing what to do or say.

When Clay tried to reach for me and try to explain, I wouldn’t let him.  “Don’t you touch me,” I said firmly.  “It’s over,” and walked out of his house, as he chased behind me.

“She means nothing to me, love.  It’s you I want.”  He pulled my arm and turned me around to face him.  “It was a mistake.  Baby, please forgive me.”  His eyes squinted together and the fear of losing me covered his face.  “I need you, Adalina, I love you.  Please, don’t leave me.”  His voice sounded desperate.

I ignored his puppy dog look, the one I never could resist.  “I hope Lila was worth it,” I said in a cold tone.  I pressed the key remote to unlock my door, got in my car and sped away.  I didn’t bother to look in my rearview mirror, or to the life that with him that we had planned.

For the Love of Jazz

Book review of “For the Love of Jazz”ForTheLoveOfJazzCoverPic

“For the Love of Jazz” by Elke Feuer

Book Description:

Restoration architect Josie Fagan takes on a project with lawyer and senator’s son, Patrick Pullman. It’s the perfect match. She needs his endorsement to save her business and he wants to restore his ancestral Chicago home. Love wasn’t part of her plan. Neither was being asked to stay at his home, haunted by ghosts, or discovering she has a claim to his home – which she adores. When she finds out his family may be responsible for her aunt’s disappearance fifty years ago, it’s a race to unearth the truth before she loses not only her business and her heart, but also her life.

Patrick can’t deny his attraction to Josie and is willing to take a chance on love since his broken engagement a year earlier. Things become complicated when he learns of their family connection and her claim to the home he loves. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, or that his family is involved in her aunt’s disappearance, so insists they work together. But, when he starts seeing his uncle’s ghost, and threats are made on her life, he’s forced to confront the possibility his family could be responsible.

My Review:

I was very privileged to get to know Elke when we were both in a Gotham Writers’ Workshop class together, which is where got to read a small part of what was an early draft of “For the Love of Jazz!”  Even after the class was over, I often thought of this story; there was something about the characters and story that haunted me and I wanted to know more!

When I received an early copy of “For the Love of Jazz” I was so excited and couldn’t wait to start it.  When I did, it was late at night, so I thought I’d only read a chapter or two, but I was wrong — I read more than that.  I was hooked instantly and with each page I turned I wanted to read more.  Elke Feuer is a very talented and gifted author and it’s hard to believe that it’s her first novel.  Her writing draws the readers in and makes it seem that you’re literally watching the story unfold and come to life before your eyes.  “For the Love of Jazz” was a quick read that was filled with twists and turns, along with the constant thought of what the real truth was.  I really liked all the characters, but Josie was definitely my favorite.  I liked how she was wasn’t really afraid of anything and took chances, maybe even on Patrick…(sorry, no spoilers!).  I also liked how there wasn’t too much detailed talk about the renovations she was doing to Patrick’s house.  For someone who doesn’t now a lot about design, I was comforted in the fact that I didn’t need to have much background in design, which I found was a major plus.

It was my first romantic suspense and it won’t be my last!  If you’re looking for an intriguing romantic suspense, “For the Love of Jazz” by Elke Feuer is the book for you!

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!

The Green Ticket

Book review of “The Green Ticket”

TheGreenTicketCoverPic

“The Green Ticket” by Samantha March

When Alex, a junior in college, gets her “dream job” as a manager at Blissful, a thriving salon and spa, she’s excited and willing to finally have an adult job.  Alex is ready to start a busy life of scheduling appointments for customers and employees, coming up with marketing and advertising plans, along with getting special attention from her bosses (Kevin and Dani, a married couple), all while trying to still have enough time for her friends and boyfriend.

Her life at Blissful was hardly what she expected.  Trying to keep her male boss’s affairs a secret from his wife, who she’s become friends with, along with trying to watch over the rest of the employees, Alex goes home each night exhausted and her mind reeling with emotions.  When Alex begins to receive hefty checks from Kevin to keep his secrets, she’s her morals are weighed.  Will she take the money and keep quiet, or will her better judgement get the best of her and realize that having it all doesn’t really mean that life really is greener (or wealthier) on the other side?  Alex’s character is put difficult situations — her male boss is a cheater and she sees her best friend trying to achieve goals of her own.

I really loved the plot of this book and was eager to see how it would turn out, especially with all that the main character is up against.  This book was a quick read that had me wondering what would happen each chapter.  It isn’t until something shocking (though somehow it fits this character) does Alex realize what I think Alex knew to do all along.  I loved how there was no blah part of the book and I wasn’t reading anything that didn’t involve the book.  The end of “The Green Ticket” surprised me a bit, though in a good way and I think it ended as it should have.  Whew, thank goodness!  I’d love for there to be a continuation, maybe where Alex is in two, three or five years from the end of where the book ended.

This was easily one of the top three books I’ve read of 2012 and I give it 5 out of 5 stars!

DonnaJoyUsher

Bio of Author, Donna Joy Usher:  Born in Brisbane, I started my working life as a dentist. After 15 years of drilling and filling I discovered there was more to life, and put pen to paper. Now I drill by day and write by night.

When not doing either of those things I like spending time with my husband and two little dogs, fishing and camping, motorbike riding, traveling, drinking wine on my deck and eating chocolate. Last year I ran my first half marathon and took up paddle boarding.

I have lived in a myriad of places: Melbourne, Perth, England, Rockhampton, Roxby Downs, Sydney, Cairns and am now situated on the New South Wales Central Coast.

GUEST POST

When Chick Lit and Dentistry Collide – A Short Story

I was early to work that Monday morning. A total rarity for me, but I was so hyped after my weekend that I hadn’t been able to sleep. Plus I was dying to share my secret with Linda, my dental nurse. Of course it wasn’t Linda that was waiting for me in my dental surgery but Trixie.

‘Linda’s sick,’ she informed me, in her high, tinkly voice.

Great. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at her ultra-short uniform. Trixie was my boss’s nurse, hired for her looks and legs, and not her ability to do more than one thing at once. Unless you counted being able to suck saliva and massage my boss’s thigh at the same time a talent. I hated working with her at the best of times but today, when I was bursting to tell someone my elicit news; it was going to be unbearable.

I placed my bag under my desk and changed into my clinic gown while I perused the day’s patients. Crown preparation, root canal, Mrs Delvita’s denture was still hurting, removal of an impacted wisdom tooth, and then after lunch a new patient consult.

I tried to concentrate on what I was doing, I really did. But root canals can be so boring – and my memories were so much more entertaining – that I had to confirm my canal length measurements three times before I was sure I had it right. Trixie didn’t notice; she was too busy watching the plasma television that hung from our roof.

The wisdom tooth managed to hold my entire attention. Looking into a tiny mirror, that’s covered in water and blood, while cutting through someone’s jaw bone does tend to do that though. And of course the sweet relief from the tooth finally giving up its tenacious hold on its bony cave was enough to distract me the entire time I wrote up the patient notes. But after that they came flooding back; memories of skin on skin, the rustling of clothes being removed, soft murmurings of pleasure.

Christ. I resisted the urge to fan myself with my day sheet. The surgeries were kept cold on purpose: you can work up quite a sweat placing implants and removing teeth. Trixie was sure to notice if I started having a hot flush.

My new consult was waiting for me after lunch. I pasted my special new-patient-smile on my face and took a seat across from him. For a moment I thought my daydreams had become so vivid they had jumped from my mind and crystallised before me. The blue eyes I had gazed into; the soft lips I had kissed, the dark, thick hair I had rumpled with my hands. He looked even more gorgeous than I remembered in his well-fitting grey suit.

‘Not a receptionist?’ he said, a small smile tugging the corners of his lips.

‘I find if I admit I’m a dentist I often spend the whole night listening to horror dental stories.’

‘That would be annoying.’

‘Extremely.’

I was about to apologise for leaving before he woke; to explain that I hadn’t wanted him to feel obliged to see me again, or to think I was desperate or needy. Of course in my rush I had locked myself out of the hotel room before I could leave my phone number. I was guessing that hadn’t looked so good. Or maybe it had. Aghhhhh. This was the reason I was still single – I found men so hard to read.

Of course as I was struggling to find the right words Trixie re-entered the room. She took one look at our new patient, straddled her dental chair so that an inordinate amount of thigh was showing and pressed herself up against him from the other side. Trixie always seemed to know what men wanted.

‘Sore tooth?’ she cooed, placing a sympathetic hand on his shoulder.

He shot me a confused look before answering her. ‘No I really just want a check-up and clean.’

Well that was a relief. Ripping out one of his teeth was sure to ruin my fantasies.

I donned my mask and glasses – feeling embarrassed at how geeky my elongated, dental loupes made me look – and lay the chair back. Wow, he really was tall. From where Trixie and I were sitting we got a great view all the way down his long, hard body. Of course I already knew it was long and hard, and that wasn’t helping with the hot flush situation.

One night stands were generally not my thing. Saturday night had been a spontaneous event after a chance meeting with a gorgeous stranger in the bar down the road from my house. I normally always made sure I had looked into the mouths of the men I slept with before we did the deed, and so I was a little nervous as to what I would find. What if his teeth were claggy with plaque? What if he had a mouth full of rotting stumps? What if he had hairy leukoplakia on the sides of his tongue – a sign of full blown AIDS? What the hell would I do then? Try and pretend everything was normal when I really wanted to run screaming from the room?

And so it was that I placed my mirror into his mouth with much trepidation. It was pink and white and squeaky clean. I breathed a sigh of relief and picked up my ultrasonic scaler, checking to make sure the tip was tight. Trixie took the chance to lean right over, exposing some cleavage while she battered her heavily made up, green eyes at him. ‘You can hold my hand if you want,’ she purred.

‘That won’t be necessary,’ I said, moving my dental chair closer so she was forced to move back a little. ‘I’m sure Mr Ritchie is brave enough to handle a dental clean.’

‘I’ll be fine, thanks.’ He smiled in Trixie’s direction and I had a sudden urge to poke her in the eye with my scaler.

Christ, I really had to get a grip. Instead of permanently disabling her, I snuggled my secret-size-12D-weapon into the back of his head as I leant over his mouth. ‘Let me know if you need a break,’ I said as I started to clean.

I was extra careful not to hurt him. I mean I really did like this man, and I was hoping to see him again. Of course like everything, when I tried too hard, I ended up totally embarrassing myself. I’ve been using a triplex for a good ten years, so you’d think I’d be able to squirt the water where I wanted it to go right? Normally yes, I have no trouble in directing the flow onto the exact tooth I need washing. So why, oh why, did today have to be the day that I misfired, squirting a long jet of water over his head and straight into his crotch. I could see it happening, see the pool of water starting to soak into the expensive fabric of his pants, but do you think I could take my finger off the button? By that time I stopped he looked like he had wet himself.

‘Oh dear,’ Trixie tittered.

‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry,’ I said, watching as he lifted his head to observe the damage.

‘Let me get that.’ Trixie, with a hand full of paper towel, made a lunge for his crotch.

‘Stop,’ I shrieked in horror. God, if I let my dental nurse give him a crotch massage I was sure to never see him again. He’d be far too embarrassed to come back.

‘I’ll have that,’ he said taking the paper from her frozen, outstretched hand.

I sat him up so he could dry himself with a bit of privacy and instead of thumping my head against the wall a few times – like I really wanted to – I started my notes. ‘We’re finished anyway,’ I advised him, ‘so have a rinse if you want.’

I could see Trixie hovering, getting ready to pounce again. ‘Don’t you have some sterilising to do?’ I asked her. She gave me a dirty look and flounced from the room. I was going to pay for that later with even less help than normal, but I didn’t care, I didn’t want her there while I performed my grovelly apology.

‘I’m sorry,’ I said again.

‘For which part?’ he asked as he came to stand beside my desk. I pushed my clinic seat towards him so he could sit down.

‘Ummm, for making you look like you wet yourself, and for,’ I lowered my voice, ‘running off without saying goodbye.’

‘And for making me have to book a dental appointment so I could see you again? I only had a clean a couple of months ago, but he wasn’t as gentle as you, so I might come here from now on if you don’t mind.’

I could feel my mouth flopping around like a dying fish but I didn’t seem to be able to get it to close. ‘For making you book a dental appointment?’ I finally managed to get out.

He smiled, ‘I don’t want you to think I’m a stalker or anything, but I work across the road from you.’

Stalker? Hell he could stalk me if he wanted. Stalk me, kidnap me, have his wicked way with me – again.

‘I’ve seen you going over for coffee and I always thought you looked nice. I just didn’t realise till Saturday night exactly how nice you are.’ He leaned towards me as he said it and his after shave wafted over me. It smelt so good I wanted to leap onto his lap and start biting his neck.

‘So,’ I said, blushing profusely, ‘you wouldn’t mind catching up again?’

We were disturbed by Trixie coming in to restock my drawers with sterile instruments. She slammed a few cupboards and muttered under her breath. Yep, I was really going to pay this afternoon.

‘Friday night?’ he said quietly, passing me his business card.

I nodded as I leant down and tucked it into my handbag, resisting the urge to high five myself. Once he had departed the surgery and headed out to reception, I continued with my notes, studiously ignoring Trixie. It was going to be a long week waiting for Friday night. But I was sure it was going to be worth the wait.

ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Roommates Laura and Angie couldn’t be more different. Meanwhile, Angie, a luckless waitress, spends her time waiting for Mr. Right to save her from temporary jobs and a life spent making bad choices. On the other side of town, Ellen abandons her life as a successful fundraiser for that of an isolated housewife in the country estate she shares with her husband, whose affairs become increasingly hard to ignore. When the city’s gossip columnist, Maddie, and restaurant reviewer, Dixon, become involved in the mystery, the unlikely duo stir up more than they intended. But will anyone be able to stop the next murder? NaNoWriMo Books

December 17, 2012 4 Comments

This time last year I was still reeling with joy because I finished writing my second book, The Right Design.  You see, I participated in my first NaNoWriMo and I won, (this means that I wrote a book in 30 days!).  I was on a high, not believing I had done it.

This year, however, I didn’t take part in NaNoWriMo because there was too much going on, but I’m proud to be sharing NaNo experiences of the below awesome ladies:

LauraChapmanPic

LAURA CHAPMAN, Change the Word

Tell us about your NaNoWriMo experience:  This was my third consecutive year participating in NaNoWriMo, and as much as I planned and prepared for it in advance, my schedule naturally went away. While my first two years I worked entirely on one project, this year I found myself in a slightly different position. I needed to add a few new chapters to the book I wrote for NaNoWriMo 2010 to prepare for (hopefully) publishing in 2013. I knew I needed to get them done before I could completely focus on my new book. That means, I participated as a NaNoWriMo rebel, and I’ll tell you it was not the same. Even though all of my friends told me to add that word count to my new novel, because it was new word count, I felt pretty guilty about it the whole time. It was definitely much more rewarding my first year, when I hit that 50K after spending Nov. 1-2 plotting the book and the rest of the month writing on airplanes, airports and if I was lucky enough my home.

What is the title of your book?  “Hard Hats and Doormats” and “Should Old Acquaintance” (Again, I was a rebel. Bad, Laura.)

What is your book about?  The first book is about a Midwestern girl transplanted in Texas to work in the big oil business. While trying to charm her way up the corporate ladder, she ends up missing a big promotion, because the bosses think she is too nice. Determined to change her ways, she stops playing by the rules professionally and personally. Both combine when she falls for one of her co-workers, which is against company policy. The MC ultimately learns that nice girls don’t always finish last.

The second is about a guy and girl who hook up at a New Year’s Eve party and decide to leave a little mystery in their night of fun by never exchanging last names, phone numbers or any way to contact each other. Five years later, they find themselves the best man and maid of honor in a holiday wedding. Stuck between wanting to support their loved ones and a rekindling of those feelings that drew them to each other in the first place, their reunion makes for an interesting December.

How many words did you write?  50,258… and counting!

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with you book?  Book one needs a few more edits, and I hope to publish in the first part of 2013. It will be my debut novel, which is super exciting. I’m plugging away at book two, which has added several thousand more words to my final NaNoWriMo tally. My goal is to finish draft one before the new year — it is a holiday book — then take some time to revise. It’d be great to publish next holiday season, but we will see.

SharonMoore

SHARON MOORE, Romance Righter

Tell us about your NaNoWriMo experience:  I was pleased and amazed at how many words I could write in a day’s time with a deadline of 30 days. It was great fun, and I was never seriously worried I wouldn’t make it. (Even though I logged 0 word count for seven days because of three out-of-state trips during the month.) What I was disappointed in was not meeting my personal goal of 65K words.

I learned a ton about which planning tools work best for me, and I’m going to apply them to my future books. I have tried bunches of tools over the years, but this combo kept me on track and writing even when I knew it wasn’t the best writing.

Never again will I let the saggy middle, or plot holes, or character inconsistencies stop my writing. Just keep writing, and it will all sort out when you revise. Some of those aspects that would have stopped me in the past, showed me another direction to go with the book because I kept writing!

Toward the end, I was seriously behind–and traveling again–but friends understood and we worked around carving writing time out for me. I found myself “downloading” (e.g., “writing”) scenes playing in my head no matter the order. Just get them down, I told myself. So now, though I have a complete novel, it is not completed. I am going into the last few thousand words and re-ordering the scenes and writing better transitions and linkers for them. THEN I can start revisions and edits.

All the warnings for NaNoWriMo say to just write and do no edits or revisions, but I found myself largely ignoring that advice. I went back into the book each session, fixing something or elaborating a scene that I had envisioned more for. I don’t think it is a problem at all to do those things as long as you continue to add to the story.

I have both “pantsed” and “plotted” past novels. For fast writing like NaNo, however, I was successful largely because of the massive planning I did in October. It was my most planful novel, and I know that’s the major reason for the writing coming so easily. I was “in the flow” more than with any other of my novels, save one. Flow writing is sooo much fun!

What is the title of your book?  The Quick and the Dedd.  It’s the first book in a series.

What is your book about?  I wrote a parnormal romantic suspense.

Isabella Quick, current owner of I.Q Security (“We take your intelligence seriously.”) misses the company of one of her best agents. Riley Dedd is, well, dead, murdered while on assignment for her. When his spirit turns up in her office, she thinks it might be other spirits–her single malt scotch perhaps–at work. Having convinced her he is real, a real ghost that is, they figure out how to work together to find his murderer, save her company from a takeover, and unmask a plot of national security proportions. And can they figure out the mechanics of making ethereal love corporeal? Throw in her petty crook ex-husband, a BFF ex-sister-in-law who’s her office receptionist along with assorted other co-workers, and you have a paranormal romantic suspense that is not as transparent as it seems.

How many words did you write?  50,115 validated. My counter showed a few more, but it was close.

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with you book?  I am sending the novel to Avon Impulse (deadline Dec. 10th). They solicited completed NaNoWriMo novels for their digital imprint (new title each week). I’m sure they know these are first drafts, so we’ll see if anything comes of it. (3-month response time.)

If that’s a no-go, there are lots of publishers to query re paranormal romantic suspense once it is revised and edited.

In the waiting time, I am going to revise/edit the novel and plot out three more Q&Ds to follow (Dedd on Arrival, Dedd to the World, and Dedd as a Doornail). In case Q&D gets published, I want to be ready to write the next ones.

Additionally, I am going to pitch a NaNoWriMo article to various in-flight magazines. The idea to do so came in this month’s issue of The Writer. So many people say they want to write a book, that this should appeal to a large number of flyers. I am researching flight magazines’ guidelines and timelines. I see this as an October article to give people time to sign up for NaNo next year.

Tell us about your NaNoWriMo experience:  Last year I had hoped to participate in National Novel Writing Month; however, I’d already begun writing what would be “Chocolate for Breakfast,” my debut novel. I only wanted to join in with something new, so I decided to wait until this year. With my debut novel released in August, and my current work-in-progress at about 50,000 words, I was ready to devote the month of November to writing a sequel to “Chocolate for Breakfast.”

I signed up and added a few writing buddies. And although I didn’t participate in any of my local events, I did want to commit myself to this project, so during the last weekend in October, I drove to the Barnes & Noble bookstore, ordered a tall skinny latte and sat down with a notebook (the kind with actual paper in it) and a pen and began outlining the story that would become “Chocolate Fondue.” Mapping and outlining was essential, I knew. Although I’m more of a “pantser” kind of writer (writing by the seat of my pants, going where my muse takes me), I didn’t think that method would work within a thirty-day time frame.

I reached 50,011 words by Day 14, but I kept going. I “finished” the messy first draft on November 29 at 62,883 words. Now the editing begins. Whoever first said “Write fast, edit slow,” was right. Getting it all out there is important. Making every word count is more important.

What is the title of your book?  My book is called “Chocolate Fondue.” That’s the working title, but I’m happy with it as of now, and I envision the cover already, so I’m sticking with it. And because it’s a sequel to “Chocolate for Breakfast,” I think it works. Keeps the wonderful chocolate theme alive!

What is your book about?  Well, it’s a sequel to “Chocolate for Breakfast.” It’s certainly beneficial to the reader if he or she has read CFB, but I’m writing the book with enough informaiton in it so that if the reader hasn’t read CFB first, they won’t be lost. It picks up on the exact same day where CFB left off, as Bernadette and her aunt Joan are standing at the reception desk in the Hotel de la Rose (Switzerland), and Bernadette is string into the face of the young man she believes is the baby boy she gave up for adoption twenty-three years earlier.

How many words did you write?  I wrote over 61,000 words by November 27th! Now that’s not enough for a book, so I’d like to have at least another 20,000 words. But I don’t think that will be a problem. Then, of course, there’s all that editing.

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with you book?  I’m still working on it! More to write and lots to edit; after all, the idea behind NaNoWriMo is to get that messy first draft written. Ultimately, I’d like to have both “Chocolate for Breakfast” and “Chocolate Fondue” picked up together, but querying agents will come much later.

Tell us about your NaNoWriMo experience:  I really liked the discipline that has to come along with writing a book in one month.  The idea that there were a community of writers participating globally was encouraging to me.  I think for anyone who needs a kick in the pants to complete a novel that has been running through your head for an eon, this contest is for you!  *Jen included*

What is the title of your book?  Ashes to Ashes

What is your book about?  A woman dies and she has gathered three people from her youth to spread her ashes: the first boyfriend, the high school bestie, and the nemesis.  There are some secrets that they wish would remain buried, yet nothing shines a light on the truth like spending time with people from your past you’d rather forget.

It has humor and tender moments in the story, as well as people you’d love to punch and some you might just wanna hug.

How many words did you write?  50,877

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with you book?  I’m going to let it sit and rest for the month, then begin edits at the top of the year.  I’m not sure yet if I will shop it around for a publisher or go indie.  I’m really happy with the way the characters developed throughout the book and without me realizing it until the end, I think they gave me their blessing to make it a two or three book series.

Tell us about your NaNoWriMo experience:  NaNoWirMo was an experience that I had never experienced before. For starters, I didn’t even think it was possible to write 50,000 words in 30 days. When the challenge first began, I was super excited, but as the excitement wore off, the pressure grew and as well as the fear; my word count began lagging immensely! When I first signed on to do NaNoWriMo, I never factored in things such as:  blog tours that I had signed up for, novels that I had promised authors I’d read (which I will get to eventually), final exams for college, and last but certainly not least, the unexpected things. Taking care of my grandmother while working on my novel for NaNoWriMo was a lot harder than I expected, but I was able to manage. All in all, this was an experience of a lifetime; NaNoWriMo definitely gave me the push that I needed to kick-start my wanting to be an author.

What is the Title of your book?  Sliding into Love

What is your book about?  As I was working on my novel for NaNoWriMo, a lot changed with the synopsis and everything, but a few things stayed the same. For example, when I went into this experience, I knew I wanted to have both of my main characters on dialysis. So basically the story is about a girl, Emma, who has been on dialysis for ten years and is tired of living the same old boring life; she is definitely ready for excitement. Then she meets a guy, Bradley, who is the star pitcher for their hometown baseball team. Bradley also ends up getting sick and has to be on dialysis. The story was inspired by my father’s diagnosis with renal failure, which he has been dealing with for almost two years now. Renal failure is an illness that runs in my family, so I thought it would be a great idea to bring awareness to the disease while exploring the aspects of a relationship between two ill people as well.

How many words did you write?  Shockingly enough, I was able to write 50,156 words! I just made the word count goal by the skin of my teeth!!

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with your book?  First and foremost, I plan on doing some heavy duty editing; it was pure torture not being able to edit my book during the month of November! Once I’ve completed my editing and things of that nature, I plan on publishing my book through KDP and if my book does well, I’d love to have a portion of my royalties go to the American Kidney Foundation.

:  This was not my first time, and as I enjoyed writing my book last year, I was more prepared this time around. I did try and do two books, but for me, it did not pan out. I mainly wrote one, and added a little over 10,000 words on the other.

What is the title of your book?
  Torn between two brothers

What is your book about?
From the title you may guess, but my MC, Megan, is set up on a blind date, and although he is not her type, she finds herself liking this short bald headed man. Until one day, she is invited to the families home for Christmas, and she meets Callum’s brother, who she had thought had been hired help. She had caught him looking at her, and found she was attracted to him. While at the families home for Christmas, she pops out to the stables for some fresh air, their Liam catches her of guard and kisses her. After that she cannot help but think about the brother, but as she is with Callum, she would not cheat on him, even though she has no idea where there relationship is going. She is confused about her feelings, how will this story unfold?

How many words did you write?
I manged just under 51K on this novel, and just over 10,000 on the YA one I started.

Now that NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with you book?
For now I plan to leave it, I still have a few books which I have been writing for a while now, to finish and edit, and last years Nano book to edit. So many to do, and not enough time.

Tell us about your NaNoWriMo experience:  This is my first year that I have done NanoWriMo and I started out great and then November ended up being a Crazy month so it took a little bit of a backburner, but will pick it up again when things start to show signs of settling.

What is the title of your book ?  A Teenage Girl’s Literary Guide to Life

What is your book about?  It is a set of 52 diary entries , each one taking on the theme of a book at the moment it has a Pride and Prejudice Theme to the novel.

How Many words did you write ?  10,567

NaNoWriMo is over, what do you plan to do with you book?  I plan to continue writing it and eventually who knows, I might get it published. I also had a cover made by Boo Savage Creations.

O

Bio of author, Karen Stivali:  Karen Stivali is a prolific writer, compulsive baker and chocoholic with a penchant for books, movies and fictional British men. When she’s not writing, she can be found cooking extravagant meals and serving them to family and friends. Prior to deciding to write full time Karen worked as a hand drawn animator, a clinical therapist, and held various food-related jobs ranging from waitress to specialty cake maker. Planning elaborate parties and fundraisers takes up what’s left of her time and sanity.

Karen has always been fascinated by the way people relate to one another so she favors books and movies that feature richly detailed characters and their relationships. In her own writing she likes to explore the dynamics between characters and has a tendency to craft romantic love stories filled with sarcasm and sexy details.

Karen has published three erotic romances with Ellora’s Cave: Marry Me (June 2012), Long-Distance Lovers (co-written with Karen Booth, March 2012) and Always You (Passionate Plume First Place Novella Winner, RWA 2012).

Karen’s first full-length novel, Meant To Be, released from Turquoise Morning Press on August 26, 2012.   Its sequel, Holding On,  released on November 26, 2012. A prequel to these novels, the short story All I Need, appears in the Foreign Affairs Anthology (Turquoise Morning Press, August 2012).

Coming in 2013 Karen will have several contemporary romances releasing from Samhain Publishing and Turquoise Morning Press. The first of these, THEN, AGAIN will release from Samhain on May 23, 2013.

Review of “Meant To Be”

Blurb:  Sometimes you’re already committed to the wrong person when fate finally brings you the right one.  When NYU professor Daniel Gardner’s career-obsessed wife convinces him to move to the suburbs, he hopes it’s a first step toward starting the family he longs to have. Instead of domestic bliss he finds his neighbor, Marienne Valeti. She loves her freelance design job, but must contend with a growing sense of isolation created by her husband’s indifference. A penchant for good books, bad movies, and Marienne’s to-die-for brownies sparks a powerful bond between them. Passion simmers, but they resist its lure, surrendering only in the seclusion of their minds. Their friendship helps them weather every hardship, from divorce to widowhood, leaving them both secretly wondering if it can survive a first kiss.

Review:  I loved this book!  From the first chapter to the last, the story and the characters from “Meant To Be” held my attention, leaving me wanting more with each swipe of my iPad.  Karen’s writing gave the reader a clear view of what it was like for Daniel and Marienne to be married to other people, which allowed the reader to cheer for them to be together because of their spouses.  One thing I really liked was how, without too much description or explanation, time and years flew by.  There were a few parts where I thought it dragged on, but by the end I understand why certain parts were in the book.  I’m not going to give anything away, but I liked how the book ended.  When something tragic happened, I could now sigh with relief that everything was out in the open.  The only thing I thought was missing was that there should’ve been more closure between Daniel and his wife.  It seemed like she just disappeared.

Daniel’s and Marienne’s story is a truly heartwarming.  It left me that feeling happy and that yes, friends can (maybe) turn into lovers.  I recommend this book to anyone who wants a cute and quick read.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!
