The Romance Writer and The Royals…

April 18, 2011 6 Comments

Any little girl, at some point in their life, wanted to, or still wants to be Cinderella.  Haven’t we imagined the guy we’re dating, (at least once) being our real Prince Charming?  Don’t we all want a Fairy Godmother to come and stir up magic, and turn our toads into a Prince?  The answer is simple, yes!

Before Diana became one of the most famous women in the world, she was a schoolteacher, just an everyday woman.  Diana, Princess of Wales gave women hope that just because they weren’t born into being a member of The Royal Family and marrying someone down the line, that true love was possible.  Princess Diana is iconic and one of the most famous one who was once a part of the British family.  Though her marriage to Prince Charles ended, thanks to the okay from the Queen of England, she still gives women the hope that your Prince is really out there, even if you are a what people call just a “normal” person.

Prince William, the son first son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, will be marrying Kate Middleton on Friday, April 29th, of this year.  These two seem to be the modern-day Royal couple.  They have been friends, a couple, friends again, and now they are engaged, which is the talk of every news broadcast I turn to.  What is she going to be wearing?  Who is invited?  How many dressed Kate will change into?  All of this is somehow news, but the thing that so many are forgetting, is that these two really seem to be in love, and that’s one thing I haven’t forgotten.  I wish them a lifetime of love and happiness, and hope that the “Royal Curse” had ended…

Today I came across THIS article about how The Royal Family has sparked the imagination of romance writers.  I have read several books, mainly by Philippa Gregory, who wrote about the King Henry VIII days, and I’ve learned a lot.  Yes, it was mostly fiction, but can’t we all say that some of fiction can be true?  Hundreds of years from now, we might be able to say that Prince William was King William with Princess Kate.  Romance readers will be able to pick up the books we’re writing now, our Hero and Heroine who are mainly based on the soon to be bride and groom.

I ask you, what King/Prince and Princess/Queen/Everyday woman would you base your romance on?

In closing, I hope you find your  Prince, and your glass slipper…

A Hero and Heroine…Now & Then

April 15, 2011 2 Comments

A Hero Then

Cary Grant:

I have had a major crush on Cary Grant since I was little.  I loved his movies and was fascinated by him from a very young age.  I found his voice alluring, his eyes mysterious but inviting, his mannerisms to be caring and loving, but most of all, I most of all was attracted to him because no matter who is onscreen love interest was, his true heroine, he put them under his spell and they fell in love.  (No matter what movie he made, I was truly under his spell).  Yes, cheesy, I know, but he made it seem so easy — boy and girl meet, fall in love and a kiss  at the end, letting me know that their love story would last a lifetime.  After watching “An Affair To Remember,” “Penny Serenade,” and “That Touch of Mink,” it was because of him, that I wanted to fall in love, forever…

A Heroine Then

Doris Day:

I can’t recall what my first Doris Day movie was, but it didn’t matter, because she was the woman wanted to be like, when I grew up.  She was the delicate blond, who was very confident in herself and wasn’t afraid to tell a man what the thinks of him, like in the movie “Pillow Talk.”  Her natural beauty, inside and out, is what I believe a true Heroine should imitate.  Ms. Day’s characters she played on-screen were courageous, fun-loving and not at all, one that would make her look bad offscreen.  She will forever be the Heroine I wish to live up to.  (I have already written a blog about the Heroine of a Lifetime — Dame Elizabeth Taylor).

A Hero Now

Bradley Cooper:

Sexy, charming, charismatic, loving, sporty and adventurous…oh, Bradley Cooper!  When I first saw him in “He’s Just Not That Into You,” I was hooked on this man!  I literally was flabbergasted at the beauty of this man!  I can’t remember ogling over a man like I did him, in a very long time.  Bradley Cooper was my new George Clooney, the new Brad(ly) Pitt.  When my brother and husband wanted to go see “The Hangover,” I certainly did not hesitate.  Recently, I remembered that he was also in “The Wedding Crashers,” “Valentine’s Day,” but most recently, “Limitless.”  The HOT Mr. Cooper is my new fantasy man who I use my imagination with when I’m writing love scenes…oh, and I did mention how hot he is?  One thing about him is that he picks very different characters to play onscreen, which allows my fantasies to elevate.

A Heroine Now

Sandra Bullock:

When I watched one of the cheesiest movies in the early 90’s, I fell in love with Sandra Bullock.  In “Love Potion No. 9,” I could relate to her character because she was a nerd in the movie, much of how categorized myself during that time in my life.  At the end of the movie, it was as if the nerdy girl had turned into a beautiful swan, when she met her true love.  I knew, because of this movie, that nerdy girls could be loved too.  When I saw her in “Speed,” I liked how her character was so different, though she seemed to still have stunning features that the action movie needed.  When she received an Academy Award for “The Blind Side,” I was so happy for, because this beautiful, stunning, funny, caring, actress was now “America’s Sweetheart.”  I love the fact that she’s not a celebrity who is all about her, and how she claims herself to be just another (beautiful) woman in the world, and it’s because of that, that I find her to be the next Heroine of a Lifetime…

A Heroine of A Lifetime

April 8, 2011 Leave a Comment

Dame Elizabeth Taylor

Dame Elizabeth Taylor died on March 23rd.  It was a very sad day for the world.  The Academy Award and Golden Globe winner was known for her eight marriages to seven different men, her dazzling jewelry and charity work.

When I was a young kid, I remember loving her movies.  At that time, I wasn’t a big fan of really long movies, but the movie “Giant,” was combined into two VHS tapes — I watched that movie over and over.  After that, I was hooked as an Elizabeth Taylor fan.  From “National Velvet,” “Father of the Bride,” “A Place in the Sun,” “Butterfield 8,” “Cleopatra,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf,” and last, but certainly not least and my personal favorite, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” she worked her heart out on every movie she made.

As a writer, I think that Elizabeth Taylor is the epitome of what a classic heroine should be.  They should have it all – brains, charm, radiance, sexuality, just to name a few, just like the legendary Elizabeth.

If you haven’t seen anything by Elizabeth Taylor, I challenge you to watch her movies and see the world is now missing.  If you have seen her movies, watch them again and fall in love all over again…

Chick-Lit: From A Man’s POV

April 4, 2011 2 Comments

Earlier this afternoon, my brother called and asked me if I wanted or needed anything at Barnes & Noble.  At first I told him no, but then decided to make it a challenge, testing what a man thinks is Chick Lit, so I then told him to bring me a Chick-Lit.  He mumbled something about Romance books and about “smut” books.  After we hung up with him, I was a little worried about what he might come back with, but had complete confidence in him.

When he did over, he brought me a Chick-Lit!  My husband asked him if he had anyone help him, and he said no.  He then told us that he picked the book because of “the colors, the font, the specific words in that particular order.”  I think he did a very well job about picking up the sub-genre of Romance, and do find it very interesting how he explained, especially by the “colors” and “font.”  He was very observant, noticing that Chick-Lit’s are usually very colorful, to attract (mostly) female readers.  As for the font, he made another observation by commenting on the font.  Squiggly lines and curly fonts (usually) attract women, compared to the upright text of “men’s books” by John Grisham, for example.  Overall, I am very proud of my little brother, who isn’t as much of a book lover as I am, that he could identify the genre that his sister will hopefully be a member of.

The book my wonderful brother picked for me is “The Overnight Socialite,” by Bridie Clark.  I look forward to reading this book and having it be the third book that I plan to review, which is a new feature on my blog, under the Book Review tab.

My 30th Birthday Present, My Book!

March 22, 2011 7 Comments

The First Draft of My First Book

For my 30th birthday, my husband gave me the most special gift ever, my book in hardcover!  When I opened it, I immediately got chills.  Everything about it was perfect! I looked at him, and then back at the book, not really believing what he had given me.  I stood there in amazement as I flipped through the words that I had written and through the book I had finished only nine days before!  On the inside left cover, was what the book is about and one the inside right cover, there was my picture and a mini bio about me.

It had all become very clear as to why he pushed me to finish my first book, and I’m so glad he did!

Thank you, honey, for making my dream a reality of “publishing” my first draft…

WRITERS: Are You Married To Your Spouse, Or Are You Married To Your Book?

March 8, 2011 1 Comment

I could define Merriam-Webster’s definition of marriage, but not going to, because I disagree with their “definition” of marriage.  I think that one can be married to anything, just like it’s often hear that some people are “married to their jobs.”  I can see how that can be true, especially for a writer…but at the end of the day, you are also a husband or a wife.

ARE YOU MARRIED TO YOUR BOOK?

For some writers, I’ve heard that some feel like they are married to the book that they are writing.  I am about to finish writing what I hope will be my first, and I think that after having shared so much effort, time, drama, happy, sad, confusing experiences with it, I can’t help but feel married.  Isn’t that a lot like being really married?  My struggles that I have had with my book, I think make it stronger (and made me a little more frazzled), but that doesn’t mean that I don’t love it any less.  There have been nights where I’m listening to my husband snore and though as bad as it might be, all I can think about is the fight I’m having with my characters, but after sleeping on it, everything is better the next day..or at least after some time has gone by.

…OR ARE YOU MARRIED TO YOUR SPOUSE?

During the process of writing my book, there has been nobody else who has been as supportive as my husband.  He has pushed me to do things that I didn’t know I could do, and he believes in me more, as each day passes.  This journey has been amazing for both of us, especially with our communicating skills, as he shares his brilliant thoughts, comments or suggestions for my book.  He’s helped me on the days (and weeks) that I have literally stared at the computer, by having the confidence in me that I’ve needed to reach my goal.  I’ve only been married just of a year, but we were together for a longer time before that, so nothing is new about him, not even the annoying way he eats a cookie.  I love being married, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  He is the one I vent to about my hardheaded characters, he’s the one who asks (on most days) if I have written, and it’s because of him that I can say, “I am a writer…and a wife!”

Writing THE END!

March 5, 2011 7 Comments

When I began writing my book, I really never thought that it would turn into a book.  That was not my intention, at least at that time.  I was taking online writing classes and was just doing my assignments, but then something happened — I couldn’t stop!  My characters were beginning to be my friends, and I knew their secrets.  Like with friends, we had our disagreements and didn’t always get along, and sometimes we didn’t talk to each other for days, even weeks at the most, but we always came back together.  Not only my characters, but also the storyline I was creating, followed me wherever I went — it was all I thought about.  As the words kept flowing, the story began to go somewhere, and just like that, I was halfway, and then I was three-quarters of the way finished…

Now, as my deadline nears, I find that I’m having trouble writing the ending.  Maybe it’s because I don’t know, because I haven’t ever written one, but I think it goes deeper than that.  I really think that I’m not wanting to say my goodbyes to my “friends,” and I certainly don’t want the storyline to end, I want to know what happens to them!  Yes, I’m sure that it sound selfish, but this is the first book I’ve ever written.  My deadline is 13 days away, and I know I’ll make it, but until then, I’ll be loving the heart out of writing my book!

Country Writing/Beach Writing/Lazy Weekend Writing

March 4, 2011 3 Comments

WRITING IN THE COUNTRY

Some of my best writing has been done while in the country.  While I’m being surrounded amongst trees, dirt roads, birds, goats and cows, I am in what I call my “happy place.”  My writing is smooth, my characters seem happy, and the storyline moves along at a steady pace.  Unfortunately, Mr. Writer’s Block sometimes decides to join me and view the countryside, but when I’m there, I don’t mind.  I take a breath, walk around, and then come back to it, not having it ruffled my feathers.

WRITING AT THE BEACH

When I go on beach vacations, the first thing I pack is my laptop, knowing that I’ll be able to get some work done, while lounging under an umbrella and sipping on strawberry daiquiri!  I’ve noticed that when I write at the beach, it seems to be very different from the day-to-day writing that I do when I’m not on vacation.  It is silly to say, but the beach brings out my erotica side.  My scenes are a lot more steamier, my characters are almost always “in the mood,” and thanks to the inspiration of the lovey-dovey couples that I observe, it helps me stay focused on my work.

LAZY WEEKEND WRITING

These days are my most favorite.  I seem to be focused on writing, and nothing else, (though I first make sure that the husband and cat are fed).  When it’s a lazy day and I’m focused on my work, it’s amazing at what gets done, and how everything just seems to come together.  I could have done nothing all week, and come to the computer for two straight days and catch up, sometimes even writing five days worth!  (On Saturday and Sunday, I have to thank my husband for his encouragement to wake up early and write).

I’m curious…what and where is your “HAPPY PLACE?”
