**Excerpt of “In With the New” by Tracy Krimmer

“What do you do for a living?” I’ve wondered this since I first met him. He’s here in the morning when most people are headed to work, and he doesn’t dress like a businessman.

He scratches his eyebrow and his head falls back. Now I’m the one waiting in anticipation. Is he some sort of celebrity? I wouldn’t even know since I don’t watch any television. Or a private detective? That would be kind of awesome. He smiles as he says, “I’m a dog trainer.”

There’s no way he’s a dog trainer. If he were, he would have jumped at the chance to solicit his services. Here I am, a lost puppy owner, and he has the perfect in. “You are not a dog trainer.”

“Cross my heart. I own a training facility here in town. I run a small store inside, too. It’s only me, and most times I am there by appointment only.”

I nod my head. “Very cool. No wonder Phil is so wonderful. You really know what you’re doing when it comes to animals.”

“I went through a certification process, but I’ve always loved animals, especially dogs. Like I said, they’re a man’s best friend.”

I glance at his hand resting on the bench and find I have to stop myself so I don’t place mine on top of his. There’s so much more behind what he says to me on the surface. Between the lines, he’s been hurt. Comfort lies where his dog is.

“Well, if things don’t get under control with Moose soon, I may have to hire you.” I mean this. I don’t want to ask him for help, and I honestly don’t think I have the time to work with a trainer, but if I’m going to trust anyone, I think it’s going to be Eli.

“Moose is a good pup. He’s just that—a puppy. He needs structure and exercise. And lots of love.”

When I agreed to adopt Moose, my caring meter was through the roof. My friend Melinda needed a home for the puppy. Her dog Lacy birthed six pups and all but one—Moose—were adopted. I stepped up to the plate as I always do. It’s easy to fall fast for a puppy, so much so that you forget what’s involved in owning one. “Well, I’m keeping you in mind.”

“Please, do.”

Moose is having fun, but I need to finish my video for today and make it to the store before three. “I should get going. Same time tomorrow?”

“Definitely.”

I stand to call Moose back to me, not that he’ll even listen. He recognizes his name, he just chooses to ignore me.

“Wait, Meg?”

“Yes.”

He’s standing now as well and turns to face me. “Would you like to join me for dinner tonight? A know a great place. Italian.”

A date. With Eli. I run through my day in my mind. If I rearrange a few things, I could be able to make it work. I don’t know if I want to go on a date, though. Eli’s great, but I’m so busy right now, and the next week is going to be so busy. I shouldn’t. I’ll only regret that I didn’t use my time efficiently. “I don’t know. My to-do list is a mile long.”

“As are your excuses. Come on. It’s dinner.” He tilts his head, lowering his eyes to my lips. His eyes meet mine again, locked like a target. “An hour and a half, two hours, tops.”

Saying yes would put me in time constraints that would stress me to the max, but not having to worry about dinner seems appealing as well. Those hazel eyes won’t disconnect from mine, and the corner of his lip curls into a smile. I can’t say no. “Fine. No more than two hours.”

“It’s a date,” he replies.

I’m afraid to admit I’m excited, but I am. Spending time with Eli is becoming such a pleasant experience, and one I look forward to and want to keep repeating. We agree to meet at the restaurant, and as I leave him to go grab Moose, I do the only thing I would do—I step right on the bag of Moose’s poop, smashing it beneath my feet.

“Whisper of Love” by Melissa Foster

Blurb: Tempest Braden adores her family and her small hometown, but sometimes too much of a good thing can be confining. At almost thirty, having watched most of her siblings find true love, she’s anxious to experience her own happily ever after, and the move to Pleasant Hill, Maryland, is just the change she needs. When she rents a room from ruggedly handsome, and closed-off, artist Nash Morgan and his adorable son, Phillip, she thinks she’s found a little slice of heaven on the outskirts of town, where she can concentrate on building her business. That is, if she can ignore the undeniable heat between her and the sinfully hot single father.

When Nash bought his farmette, he had one goal in mind—to provide a loving, stable home for his son. He never imagined he’d be raising Phillip alone, or renting out a room to keep their heads above water. Then again, he never imagined losing his brother, or spending two years sailing around the world with parents who seemed to forget one son was still alive.

Sparks fly from the moment Tempest moves in, and her positive energy and inquisitive nature brings new life into Nash and Phillip’s quiet, confined world. For the first time in years, Nash wants to let a woman into his world, but while his loss made him stronger, that strength came at a price, leaving him walled off and wary of opening his heart again.

EXCERPT

Nash Morgan shifted his three-year-old son, Phillip, onto his hip and reached behind him to shut the gate. The chickens scurried away amid cackles and mad wing flaps. He set Phillip on the ground, and his son shook his head, shrugging like he’d been doing this for twenty years and couldn’t believe the chickens still ran from them. He ruffled his boy’s springy dark curls, drawing a serious, expectant look and an outstretched hand from Phillip. Nash loved his little man’s eagerness to get started on their evening chores. He handed him a smaller bucket from inside his larger one and nodded toward the coop.

Phillip returned the nod and clomped his booted feet into the coop to collect the eggs. Nash adjusted his baseball cap, listening as Phillip counted off each egg with an “Mm-hm.”

He drew in a deep breath, hoping, for the millionth time, that he was doing enough for his son. He was the only parent Phillip had. Or rather, the only one who wanted him, a fact that never failed to grate on him like nails dragging along a chalkboard. His cell phone rang and Larry Robert’s number flashed on the screen. Nash uttered a curse. Larry owned a gallery in North Carolina, and he’d given Nash his first big break. A break that could have carried him to a lifetime of success. But after Phillip was born he’d been unable to keep up with the demands of custom orders. Larry was opening another gallery in Virginia, and he wanted to feature Nash’s work. Nash had turned him down, but Larry was persistent.

Swallowing the acidic taste of disappointment, he let the call go to voicemail and looked across the yard at the barn, which served as his workshop for the furniture he made and sold in town. He’d long ago locked up his metalworking and wood-sculpting workshop and stored his unfinished work. Gallery-worthy pieces, if he ever had the time to finish them. Pipe dreams. He’d had them, even made them a reality for a while. But that was a long time ago, and there was no sense thinking about something that could never be—at least not until Phillip was much older.

He ducked into the coop and checked the chickens’ food and water. Scanning the nesting beds, he snatched up the few eggs Phillip had missed. Phillip leaned against Nash’s leg and yawned. Nash couldn’t imagine anyone not loving their child with all their heart, but Phillip’s mother, Alaina, had taken off three months after their son was born, and other than receiving official documents releasing her from her parental rights, he hadn’t heard from her since. Not a day passed that he didn’t worry about the long-term effects her leaving would have on his son.

“Good job, Phillip.” He said his son’s name so fast it came out sounding like “Flip.” He set down his bucket, wrapped his arms around his boy, and whispered in his ear, “I love you, little dude.” He kissed his cheek and scooped him up, earning the sweetest giggle known to man.

Nash grabbed the buckets and headed for the goat pen. Big and Little, the two goats, trailed behind them as Phillip followed Nash through the process of checking their food and water and sweeping out the goat house, as he did every night. Phillip wiggled the nozzle of the water pipe, just as Nash had, mimicking his “Hm.” Nash tossed a cup of oats in the food bin and waited while Phillip did the same. Big nibbled on Phillip’s shirt, and Phillip leaned down and kissed his head.

“C’mon, buddy.” Nash had grown up in rural Virginia. Most of his friends had lived on farms, and he had no doubt that caring for animals would help Phillip learn responsibility. Not to mention that his son adored all types of animals, from squirrels to goats to worms. That was just fine with Nash. In his experience, animals were a lot more trustworthy than people.

The sound of tires on gravel drew his attention. He scooped Phillip into his arms, locked the goat pen, and grabbed the buckets.

“Visitor,” he said, carrying Phillip toward the house and eyeing the Prius parking behind his old Ford pickup truck. His truck was a gas guzzler, but as much as he hated that, he needed the bed of the truck to haul the furniture he made into town. He hoped Tempest Braden, the woman coming to see the room he was renting out, wasn’t a preachy tree hugger. Hell, he hoped she would turn out to be the silent type so he could pretend she didn’t live in their house.

Phillip’s brows knitted, his hands firmly planted around Nash’s neck. He wasn’t used to visitors. The last several people who had come to see the room they had for rent hadn’t been the kind of people Nash wanted around his son. They’d rubbed him the wrong way—too aggressive, too loud, too shady, too flighty. He just needed a stable, responsible person to rent the room so he could afford to upgrade a few of his tools and start saving for Phillip’s future. He tightened his grip on his son and headed up to meet the tall blonde stepping from the car.

Her wispy skirt fluttered around her knees. Large pink roses with muted green leaves looked as if they’d been thrown onto the flimsy white material haphazardly. A fringe of lace lined the edges. On anyone else the flouncy, floral skirt might look immature. But her legs went on forever, and coupled with her tight, curve-hugging tank top, she looked like Sweet and Sexy collided at the corner of Sinful Temptation.

BOOK REVIEW: “The Next Best Thing”

January 16, 2017 Leave a Comment

the-next-best-thing

“The Next Best Thing” by Wendi Nunnery

Blurb: Four years ago, Emma Fraser’s first love took his own life. Now, twenty years old and in college, Emma and her best friend, Andy, are still mourning the loss of a friend and brother. Nothing is the same as it once was…and things are about to change even more.

Too heartbroken to even consider falling in love again, Emma stays distracted by school and work. Until she meets Landon and, for the first time ever, finds herself believing she might actually have a future with someone. But when Deegan Burke—the man responsible for all of Emma’s heartache—gets out of prison early, Emma is suddenly confronted by her worst fears. And when faced with choices she never thought she’d have to make, Emma discovers that the only person she really wants by her side is the last person she ever expected.

My Review: Having dealt with my own heartache, I was drawn to “The Next Best Thing.” At first, it started out slow, then it quickly picked up, and when it did, it didn’t stop until the last sentence. I loved Emma’s character. Losing a loved one is hard, but she had a wonderful support group around her that helped her move on from a horrible incident. Emma’s strength throughout the book amazed me, especially with how things went down with her best girlfriend–who I thought wasn’t a good friend at all, and I believed Emma saw that, too.

While I liked Emma with Andy and as sweet as he was, there was something about how they seemed better as friends. Without giving away any spoilers, Emma ended up with the right guy, and I was so pleased with how when a certain truth came out that he didn’t abandon her for good, (thank you, Wendi, for this).

If you’re looking for a page-turner that will make you think about life and how precious it is, then I recommend this book.

I give “The Next Best Thing” 5 stars!

BOOK REVIEW: “Dating for Decades”

DatingForDecades.v8

“Dating for Decades” by Tracy Krimmer

Blurb: IT guru Cassie Noble can depend on networks and servers. It’s the people in her life that always let her down. With her fortieth birthday looming, she’d love to find a way to trust and commit to someone. Eager to work out her problems methodically, Cassie reaches out to her support group. Electrician Keith manages to infiltrate their all-female ranks, infuriating her with his flippant jokes and his all-too laid back attitude. The other women all find him hilarious and she can’t see why. She takes this seriously and he’s doing anything but. When Cassie needs Keith’s help on a project at her day job, she’s dreading having to work closely with him, however much his hazel eyes make her stop dead in her tracks. As days turn to weeks, he starts to break down her hard exterior. She’s seeing new possibilities. She’s seeing the future…a life that is joyful and bright. A life that includes Keith. But when a letter from her mother drags her back to the world where Cassie has no control, she shuts down. Can her support group yank her back from that place where hope is lost? And can the man who once drove her crazy be the one who finally doesn’t let her down?

My Review: I’ve been wanting to read “Dating for Decades” since it came out in June and after dealing with some personal family matters for the past few months, it was the perfect read to keep my mind distracted.

For a woman worried about turning the big 4-0, she acted much younger, similar to a young child who just wanted to be loved. While there is a back story about Cassie’s past and why she is how she is, it’s something she desperately wants to forget (sorry, no spoilers), I sympathised with her because nobody should go through what she had, and was content as to how she gets closure.

As for Cassie’s two main love interests, I liked them both, and they stood out in their way when they were with Cassie. While Lucas is much younger than her, he came across sarcastic, yet smooth, which made me like him–something that only a few authors can do well. Then there’s Keith…((swoon)). I won’t say who what happens in the end, but I was very pleased and even had tears in my eyes.

My only problem with the book is why she was so against marriage, even at the end.

Overall, no matter how old you are, I’m confident you will love this witty, relatable, romantic and delightfully fun page-turner.

I  give “Dating for Decades” 5 stars.

RELEASE DAY and REVIEW of “Plan Bea”

October 14, 2015 2 Comments

PlanBeaCoverPic

It’s release day for “Plan Bea” by Hilary Grossman

Blurb: How well do you really know the people in your life?

Annabel O’Conner has the perfect husband, two adorable children, an amazing job, and the mother from hell! Annabel doesn’t like it but has come to terms with the fact that her relationship with her mother, Bea, deteriorated to the point of forced and strained communications. However, an unscheduled call from Bea turns her world around and makes Annabel question everything she believed about her life.

Despite the fact secrets, lies, and misplaced blame have destroyed the women’s relationship; Annabel reluctantly agrees to help Bea plan her wedding. Little does Annabel know the impact of her decision.

In this Women’s Contemporary Fiction novel, Hilary Grossman explores the complex relationship that exists between mothers and daughters in a light-hearted and relatable manner.

My Review:

When I first read the blurb of Hilary Grossman’s second novel, my interest was very piqued. After all, I enjoy her first book, “Dangled Carat,” so I knew I was going to like this one, too. Well, I ended up loving it!

I would love to be friends with Annabel, her husband, and of course, her two little ones. Hilary’s writing is so powerful that I was easily drawn to Annabel’s mother, Bea, even though she was sarcastic and witchy, at times, though, at the end, I understood why.

“Plan Bea” was an amazing book, one I will never forget. With all the twists and turns in this book, it wasn’t predictable, but rather a quick page-turner. If you’re looking for a book that will make you wonder if repairing a mother/daughter relationship is possible, I highly recommend this book. It makes you wonder what you can learn by communicating, especially when secrets and horrible events take place, only to discover that years could’ve gone by without so much pain and hurt.

While I’m blessed to have a wonderful and loving relationship with my mom, I could often relate to Annabel’s feelings, and was happy she had her loving husband and his family to lean on. **Warning, when reading this book, it’s a must that you have tissues next to you. I can’t tell you how many times I cried, and cried, and cried even more.

I give “Plan Bea” 5 stars!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Describe yourself in five words: Motivated, Weird, Short, Loyal, Sarcastic

You knew you were a writer when…: I was nine years old. I fell in love with writing stories and poems.

Salty or sweet? I like both separate – never together. I’m not a sea salt on chocolate fan!

What is your writing/editing/publishing process like? A hot mess! My first draft is always horrible. I refer to it as an extended outline! I write the first draft and then go back and practically rewrite the entire thing. My editing process drives me nuts and people walk on eggshells around me while I’m in that process. I need silence to edit. Total silence.

What must an author have with them at all times? Something to record ideas on, whether it’s a pen and paper or a smartphone with a notes app. And coffee.

How do you come up your book titles? Usually I start with a title. The title pops into my head and the rest just follows.

Hard/paperbacks or eBooks? Both. I love taking physical books on vacation with me. Ebooks are awesome because I can carry them with me all the time!

What are you reading right now? As I write this in July, an ARC of Chalk Lines & Lipstick by Ophelia London, which released on August 11.

Do you have any writing rituals? A clean house and coffee. The house must be picked up with nothing on the floor or clutter on the tables!

What do you want your readers to take away from your books? Whatever they want. I write my books and hope people enjoy what they read and want to read more. I don’t have hidden themes I wish they would take away. With Jay Walking, my new release, I do hope women learn to love their bodies and people want to get fit, but if they don’t take that and just think, “Hey, I just read a fun book!” then that’s enough for me!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Head down and write. Don’t focus on what others are doing. It’s easy to get caught up in everyone else’s success.

What are you working on right now? Another Pastime Pursuits novel. This will tell the story of Kate, a character from Caching In.

They grab coffee together, and Chelsea finds herself thinking about him long after their short meeting. The thought of dating again hadn’t crossed her mind in years, and she doesn’t even know if Jay is available, or if he would be interested in her despite her unfit body.

Just when she has a handle on her new routine, her past catches up with her, throwing her blossoming relationship with Jay and the rest of her life into chaos. Can Chelsea hold onto the people she loves most, or will a wrong turn set her up for failure?
