“So, Katherine, another round before our big performance?” Ben asked, referring to the toasts and bringing my attention back to the present again. Somehow, I had managed to glide through dinner plus wine.

“Sounds like a plan.” I felt a little shaky as we made our way to the bar. Nerves, I was sure. Just one more drink couldn’t hurt.

Halfway through my second drink the DJ gave Ben the signal: one more song before the toasts. I took a deep breath. My toast was taken from one of those terribly cliché books. I added in a couple of details about Amy to make it more personal; and, of course, steered clear of the whole having dated the groom issue. I felt pretty good about what I had ultimately come up with. I made note cards and even practiced in front of the mirror a couple of times, determined not to let Amy down. The music stopped.

“All right folks, I’ve got a couple of people here to share some thoughts with the bride and groom,” announced the DJ.

It was time. Ben was up first, so I kept my seat at the bar.

“So, I’ve known Jack for a few years, and I’ve witnessed some of his biggest accomplishments. Three years ago, we finished our MBAs together. Jack went on to get a brilliant management position. After only two and a half years of hard work, he was recently promoted to vice president of his division. However, of all these accomplishments, I know that the one Jack is most proud of is his marriage to Amy today. Now, admittedly, I don’t know Amy that well, but I know she must be amazing because somehow she has inspired from my friend, not only a proposal, but also a wedding within months. Those of you who know Jack understand; he doesn’t do anything fast. This is a man who thinks through tying his shoes every morning.” Some laughter from the crowd. “In fact, I was a little worried there was something suspicious going on; maybe Amy had whipped up some gypsy love potion and baked it in the brownies.” More laughter from the crowd. “Admittedly, I looked for signs to make sure this wasn’t the case. But I didn’t have to look far. As many of you know, Jack’s father had a heart attack a few weeks ago and had to have surgery. He’s much better and here with us today, thankfully, but it was a tough time for the family. I went to visit at the hospital several times, and each time Amy was there. This is, I remind you, less then three weeks before her wedding, that she has had barely three months to plan …”

Shit. I hadn’t even known. The one thing that always stuck out in my mind about Jack was his close relationship with his father. It was admirable, almost inspiring. Amy hadn’t even mentioned the heart attack. Then again, why would she have? I would just have found a way to turn it into another reason the wedding shouldn’t happen. What was I doing? Why did this all matter so much to me? They were happy, they were right for each other. Amy said so, and no one’s family seemed upset—hell, they’re just happy to all be alive today.

“Kate, you’re up.” Ben nudged me. I had been too lost in my thoughts to even realize that he had finished, much less had time to return to his spot next to me at the bar.

I stood up and walked to the table where the DJ was waiting with a microphone. From the look on his face, I gathered it was taking me a while to get there. I dug in my purse for my notes as I walked across the dance floor. Car keys, wallet, lipstick, car keys, wallet, lipstick, car keys … no note cards. Shit. Where were they? The bar, I left them on the bar after looking over them. All the way in the back of the room. Shuffles and whispers began to spread through the tables. Shit. I had to get on with it. I took the microphone and turned to look out into the mirage of white linen and lilacs. The faces in front of me blurred.

“Um, hi. I’m Kate, one of the bridesmaids. Um, you see I have this toast all planned, but it seems that I left my note cards at the bar …”

Laughter from the crowd; OK, I could do this.

“So, I’ve known Amy for almost five years and Jack for, let’s see, I guess about six or seven … or, wow – maybe almost eight … maybe. Anyway, Amy and I met after college— and Jack and I actually dated in college …”

Silence. There was a tunneled din in my ears, the one where you can hear yourself talk, but your voice sounds like you are talking into a cardboard paper towel roll like you did when you were a kid.

“So, um, let me just say that until just now I didn’t even know that Jack’s dad had a heart attack. I’m so sorry, Mr. Cannon … and Jack. And Amy, I hate that you felt you couldn’t tell me. I’m sorry I’ve been such a bitch … I mean, I’m sorry I haven’t been so nice about …”

A tap on my shoulder. Ben with my note cards and a very concerned look on his face. The whole room was swaying as I reached out for them. The whirring had become so loud I couldn’t even hear what Ben was saying to me. My eyelids were heavy and the room had started to spin so fast that I searched for something to hold on to. I saw Ben reach out for me. Everything went black.

My Review: “Neverending Beginnings” is unlike any book I’ve ever read. From the beginning, Kate’s story begins immediately, and once it started, I didn’t want to stop reading. From the shocking news that Kate’s ex is marrying her best friend, to taking an interest in the best man, and a having happily-ever-after ending, “Neverending Beginnings” had me flipping pages like crazy, and enjoying all the twists, turns along the way.

Though, at times, reading about Kate’s week was a little repetitive (but I expected that), at the end of the book, I was not disappointed. I must admit that I was curious to see how the author would pull off repeating Kate’s week, but she did a fantastic job! It was interesting to see how Kate’s relationships changed throughout the book, and that was one of the things I liked best. As for how the book ended, I loved it, and even got a little teary-eyed! This was my first book by Mary Chris Escobar, and it will not be my last!

I give “Neverending Beginnings” 5 stars!

My Review:

After I read “Sleeping with Paris” by Juliette Sobanet, I was in instant fan, so I was very excited to read “Honeymoon in Paris”.

This book was easy to get started reading, as I was happy it picked up not too much later after the prequel ended. I missed Juliette and Luc together, and I especially missed reading Luc’s sexy accent.

The characters were very well written, funny, and very intriguing, especially the new characters. There was a lot of mystery in this one (maybe a little too much), and I wished there would’ve been more of was more interaction between Charlotte and Luc. In the end, it made sense why there wasn’t, but with all the interaction they had in “Sleeping in Paris”, I wanted more passion. With all the twists and turns in this book, I was pulling for the newlyweds, hoping that it would end well. Thankfully, I was very happy with how the book ended, mainly because I really think Charlotte and Luc had something special.

In closing, Juliette Sobanet is a terrific author who draws readers into the lives of her more than likable characters. While I don’t speak French, she made it easy to understand what was saying. This was my second book by Juliette, and I cannot wait to read more by her, as this book did keep me interested. I’d recommend this book to anyone who wants a sexy, cute, mysterious read.

I give this book 4 stars!

My Review: It brings me great joy to share this review on the release day of In the Mirror, (CONGRATULATIONS, Kaira!). I had never read anything by Kaira Rouda, so I was beyond ecstatic when she asked me if I would read and review her newest book. Instantly, I jumped at the chance, as I’ve seen her books and have heard such amazing things about how they draw you in.

Right from the start, I was, in fact, drawn in, and was pursued by Kaira’s main character, Jennifer. Even though she was in a serious state of her cancer, Jennifer was a fighter, who wanted to keep her life as normal as possible. Since she’s in a treatment center with other patients, she has become friends with a wonderful man, who, at times, I thought was a little too forward, but I understood why he acted the way he did, along with the significance of his character, but only at the end.

Jennifer appears to have a loving marriage, and two children she adore her, even if she can’t be at home with them. Along with them, she also has a sister who seems a little too mysterious (something was off about her from the beginning), a mother who cares, yet has a hard time of showing it, and a father who loves her. What more could one want, right? Well, from the moment her ex is mentioned, I got not such a good feeling about him, and that only strengthened when he went to visit Jennifer…and took her away, (nope, no spoilers, but let’s just say I was holding my breath the whole time).

While reading In the Mirror, I laughed and cried, but not only that, I got angry, too, and wanted to protect Jennifer from any evilness that would come her way.

The last paragraph of the book did have me wounding a lot — did Jennifer die, or did she fall asleep. As of now, I’m still debating what really happened, but I think that’s what Kaira wanted her readers to do — to think about the situation, and all that Jennifer went through.

Like I mentioned above, this was my first book by Kaira Rouda, and it won’t be my last. She’s an amazing author, who leaves you wanting more, both from her characters and her books. If you’re looking for a book that is a fast, quick read, one you can’t put down and will tug and melt your heart along the way, added with a little mystery at the end, I highly recommend In the Mirror!

I give this book 5 stars!

INTERVIEW

Describe your writing style in five words: for my women’s fiction novels like In the Mirror and Here, Home, Hope: funny, heart-warming, sweet, insightful. And when I’m writing romantic suspense, like All the Difference, adventurous and suspenseful!

Writing has always made you feel…: happy. It is my favorite form of expression, always has been.

What was your inspiration for “In the Mirror”? Unfortunately, knowing too many young mothers facing the terrible diagnosis of breast cancer. In particular, a close friend who was the definition of grace under pressure as she battled the disease, and who remains an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

What is you’re writing/editing/publishing process like for writing a book? It’s actually quite different for each novel, depending on the amount of research needed. And the publishing process – well, that, too, has been different for each book. It’s like the wild west out here in publishing land, but I’m enjoying the ride – as long as readers continue to enjoy my stories, that is all that matters.

Do you ever experience writer’s block? If so, what’s your solution? Last year – all of 2013 – was the worst writer’s block year for me. It was horrible. I couldn’t find a solution so I hope it doesn’t come back again like that! The only thing that helped me was the calendar changing to 2014!

Do you have any writing rituals? My favorite writing ritual involves having my dog, Tucker, nestled inside the top drawer of my desk as I write. Not kidding. I took out all of the desk stuff – pens, stapler, paper clips etc. – and put his dog bed in there. He’s a six pound shitzu-poodle mix, so he fits perfectly!

What do you want readers to take away from your books? I love it when my readers are entertained, perhaps learn a little something or feel a bit inspired. In the end, I would like my stories to linger with you, in a good way of course.

At the end of “In the Mirror,” readers are left wondering if the main character dies or falls asleep. What do you think happened to Jennifer, and what made you write it that way? I know as much as you do! Obviously, Jennifer is tired after finally having the party. I do find it interesting, readers’ assumptions about what happens to Jennifer. She is clearly weaker at the end of the novel, but she had a good reason to be, don’t you think?

If you weren’t an author, what would you be? A creative director at an advertising agency.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Just keep writing.

What are you working on now? A summer short story. And I’m looking forward to the release of my next romantic suspense, Lines in the Sand, this August!

Book review of “Chocolate For Breakfast”

My Review:

“Chocolate for Breakfast” has been on my TBR list for a long time, so I was very eager to start this book.

I planned to only read the first chapter of this book since I was on the treadmill, but I ended up reading more than that because the book captured my attention with Bernie taking off for Switzerland.

All the characters had their own personalities, but Bernie was my favorite. As a young woman who was eagerly wanting to be a grown up, not only did she seem mature, she appeared to know what she wanted. During her adventures in Switzerland, Bernie had several life changing events. From thinking she’s in love with a banker and losing her virginity to him, becoming pregnant, and losing a family member that she’s close to, Bernie had quite a lot on her plate. With the help of her friends (old and new), she survived it all.

There were a lot of twists and turns, some that I didn’t expect, which made it a quick read. One thing that I liked about the end was that I got to see where Bernie was years later in her life, which was interesting to me because she was very different. Though it was sensed, the only thing that I wish there could’ve been more of was seeing more tension between Bernie and her mother.

Martha Reynolds is a very talented author who has written an unforgettable book about a young woman’s journey during her time away from home. I cried, laughed, and cried more. This was the first book I read by Martha Reynolds, and it’s not my last. Right now I’m reading the next book in Martha’s Chocolate Series, “Chocolate Fondue”. If you’re looking for a wonderful, quick read, with a lot of heart, I recommend “Chocolate for Breakfast”.

I give this book 5 stars!

My Thoughts on The Bachelor: Season 17

Insert a guy who has a body that was made for TV who claims to be searching his wife, a lot of dramatic women and the rose that always lingers, and you’ve got season seventeen of The Bachelor.

I’ve never really been that girlie kind of woman who watches shows like The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. Okay, yes, I did watch the one with Trista and Ryan (who are still together, by the way), but the show wasn’t believable back then, nor do I feel it is now. Could it all be a fantasy? Yes, quite possibly. We only get to see what the cameras show us, which makes for better drama, quite a bit of viewer judgements (both good and bad), and of course, the feeling of being let on by The Bachelor or The Bachelorette.

When I was young, I wanted the fairytale, and I still do, but in order to have that and what the show doesn’t show is that couples have to work 100%/100% each day on their relationship. If there were one thing about these shows is to show the couples working on their relationship instead of gallivanting around the country like two teens on spring break. I’m not saying to take all the lovey-dovey stuff out, but make it more of a reality, hence isn’t that supposed to be “reality TV?”

And so, last night. Oh, boy…

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

When Emily dumped Sean, I felt sorry for him. While I liked Arie and Jeff who Emily picked in the end (but supposedly they’re not together anymore), it was obvious to me that he took the process very seriously and why not? Okay, I was hooked, so I began watching Sean’s season, hoping that he’d find the love of his life.

After the first episode, Tierra was my favorite pick. She certainly did have a “sparkle” about her. When Sean gave her the first rose before knowing her for five minutes, I thought that she might be the one, however, that changed shortly afterward. Falling down stairs (some think on purpose), jumping in freezing water and expecting Sean to dote after you and cause drama amongst the other women in the house, just didn’t work for her. I’m glad that Sean finally saw through her and sent her home. I guess it’s a good thing because in the episode of “The Women Tell All,” she’s engaged now to a guy who she claimed “they needed time away from each other.” Hmm…

And then there’s Des, the wedding planner. I loved her from the beginning. She’s cute, fun and she looked like she belonged with Sean…but unfortunately, he sent her home. I’d still love to know the reason, but I’m guessing that it has something to do with her brother. I know I’d be upset with him for how he treated Sean. Though there is good news, people — Des is the new Bachelorette, which begins this May! Who’s going to be watching? I know I will be!

Lindsay Yenter was the favorite between the final two. She seemed the more genuine woman and more the Sean-type. They didn’t seem fake and I liked her morals. While she came out of the limo in a wedding dress and got drunk the first night, she quickly redeemed herself, but unfortunately not well enough to win Sean’s heart. As I was watching the episode last night I was amazed at how classy and mature she acted when Sean told her that he wasn’t picking her. I would have said the same thing…well, okay, I might have been a little more boisterous. I also thought it was cool how she stopped and took off her shoes as she made her way back to the car walking away from Sean. You go girl! I like Lindsay Yenter and wish her the best of luck in life and in love!

And then there’s Catherine Giudici, the winner. I never saw what he liked so much about her. She seemed very immature and she brings Sean down with him. She stayed under the radar for most of the show, but maybe that was what Sean wanted, a normal girl without a lot of drama…but I don’t see it that way. Did Sean pick her because she didn’t want to leave him the night before the proposal? I think so. He seems like such a caretaker and wants to give, so I’m thinking that he let Lindsay go because he knew she can handle being without him. She’s a survivor and Catherine’s not. Hmm, just a thought…

We’ve had fun organizing and playing with (and in) the new parts of the house, but never really opened back up the old part, making it into one home — until recently. Our front door was blue to begin with, and we wanted a change. We sanded for a few hours, then stopped, letting it go not very pretty for a long time. Just this past weekend, we finished…and it’s so pretty! The paint color we ended up with is called “Stolen Kiss,” (perfect name, don’t ya’ think?). After the door was finished, we started (cleaning out, throwing out/away and organizing) the rest of the house. Our first task was our “reading room,” (A.K.A. “where we put everything else”). Step-by-step through our organization, we made huge progress — and still are! In the past four days, we’ve bought five of these bookshelves from Office Depot, each under $50 dollars! Now, comes the fun part! My amazing, handsome, loving and funny husband brought home a barcode scanner, (yes, like from the stores) and we’ve scanned almost every book in our house and put them on our new shelves so we can record every book we have in our house. (I swear, he has a way to do everything!) While it’s been quite and eye-opening experience to see all the books I have in their place, it’s mind-boggling of what to do with them. I have so many different type of books that it seems more like a bookstore than a home, but I’m okay with that because I love bookstores — ha, ha!
