Author Interview with Monique McDonell, author of “Something of a Spark”

October 31, 2017 2 Comments

About Monique McDonell: Monique is an Australian author who writes contemporary women’s fiction including chick lit and romance. She has written all her

She has written all her life especially as a child when I loved to write short stories and poetry. At University she studied Creative Writing as part of my Communication degree. Afterwards Monique was busy working in public relations, and didn’t write for pleasure for quite a few years although she wrote many media releases, brochures and newsletters. (And still does in her day-job!)When Monique began to write again she noticed a trend – writing dark unhappy stories made her unhappy. So she made a decision to write a novel with a happy ending and have been writing happy stories ever since.

When Monique began to write again she noticed a trend – writing dark unhappy stories made her unhappy. So she made a decision to write a novel with a happy ending and have been writing happy stories ever since.

She is the author of five stand alone novels including Mr. Right and Other Mongrels and Hearts Afire and the popular Upper Crust Series. Many of her novels focus on an Australian characters meeting and visiting US characters.

Monique have been a member of the writing group The Writer’s Dozen for ten years. Our anthology Better Than Chocolate raised over $10,000 for the charity Room to Read and helped build a library in South East Asia. She is also a member of the Romance Writers of Australia. In 2015 had a piece on writing chick lit featured in the successful Australian non-fiction book Copyfight.

INTERVIEW

Describe your latest novel in five sentences: Something of a Spark – small town radio DJ who has moved to the city accidentally meets the city fireman who has just moved to her town – talk about a case of bad timing. Can they make it work long-distance or will secrets, lives and sisters keep them apart. This is the first book in the Jewel Sisters romance series. If you like quirky families, sexy fireman and falling in love then this book is for you.

Hard/paperbacks or eBooks? These days I pretty much read almost exclusively on my e-reader. I’m a super fast reader and it means I can finish one book and start another one straight away. I also read a lot of indie authors or authors whose books would be hard to find in an Australian bookshop.

How do you come up with names for your character? Sometimes names are hard but not in this series – the series came about because I had the idea to name each sister after a gem or jewel – Sapphire, Ruby, Amethyst and Emerald.

Tell us about your writing/editing/publishing process: I try and write every day, though I don’t always succeed and when I have a solid first draft I go back through it a few times before it goes to my BETA readers, I’m also in a writing group who help critique along the way. I send it to my BETA readers with a whole list of questions and I really take their advice – depending on the book I have between three and six readers. Then I make the changes and off it goes to the editor, then I make her changes and it gets a proofread before I publish. It’s a process!

Do you have any writing rituals? I almost always write with coffee, and I often drink it from a mug with one of my book covers on it – I find that inspires me. I’m not going to lie, I often have a red wine if I’m writing a sex scene. Mainly, I now know my most effective writing times in the day and I try and make the most of them.

What are you reading right now? I’m reading a lot of romance series right now. I’m always looking for new ones because I tend to binge read one author and then go hunting for the next.

Where did you get the idea for “Something of a Spark”? I had the idea to write the series with each sister named after a jewel and Saffy came to me as a character who had wanted to escape her family and small town.  I wanted to write another fireman and I saw Cam (in my mind) jogging down the street and I went from there.

Facebook or Twitter? Facebook, I find it more personal and easier to manage. I miss so much on Twitter while I‘m at work I feel as if I’m always catching up.

Who or what has had the most impact on your writing career? I’m in a really great writing group and have been for over a decade. I think that keeps me going and motivated.

Salty or sweet? Do you mean books or food? (Ha! Ha!) My books are pretty sweet but I like my food salty.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Write every day is the best writing advice I’ve been given. Honestly as an indie author I need to publish often and the only way to do that is to have books and get them done quickly.

What are you working on right now? As I type this I’m just about to finish Something to Sing  About, Book 2 in the Jewel Sisters Romance series (which is so fun to write) and as soon as I’m done I will start on Any Way You Like It, Book 8 in the Upper Crust Series.

“Something of a Spark” by Monique McDonell

Sometimes keeping a secret is more trouble than it’s worth.

Growing up as one of the Jewel Sisters of Caudal Bay has never been easy for Sapphire Smith. As far as her friend’s and family are concerned she’s now a struggling radio DJ living in Sydney and working part-time as a PA for her best friend country music star Ryan Storm.

But that’s only part of the story.

When an accident in her home town brings real-life hero and firefighter Campbell into her world their relationship starts with a smoulder and slowly begins to spark. Campbell has given up his career as a corporate lawyer for a quieter, more rewarding life. He loves his new town and the welcoming atmosphere as much as Saffy loves the anonymity of the city.

As their relationship begins to heat up one thing is clear – Cam is all about honesty while Saffy has something to hide: her work partnership with Ryan involves more than social media and if the truth comes out it could be a disaster for them both.

Will Saffy come clean before their secret gets out? Or will her desire to keep people at arm’s length see her relationship with Ryan fizzle out before it has a chance to catch fire.

I wish someone would’ve warned me about the dangers of falling in love with your best friend.
I was no stranger to covering up my problems with meaningless sex and alcohol.
When Brea asked me for one night to help her forget, I craved being the man she needed.
Just sex.
No commitment.
Then she begged me to promise her nothing would change between us. I couldn’t bring myself to lie to her.
One night.
One broken promise.
I will never forget the night I fell in love with my best friend, and now nothing will ever be the same.

Build a wall.
Lock it away.
Let no one in.
Everyone should have a childhood worth remembering. Only I remember mine for all the wrong reasons. Starting over in a new town is hard enough. When you are running from your past, it doesn’t get any easier.
I was ready to say goodbye to the burdens I have carried. The pain I’ve experienced is more than anyone should have to face.
Then I met him…
He takes my breath away. I can’t ignore the way he makes me feel. I know he has the power to destroy me.
And that’s what scares me the most

“The Sheriff’s Christmas Angels” by Debra Holt

Blurb: Angels. Emma Cramer doesn’t consider herself an angel by any stretch of the imagination. Temporarily stranded, broke and unable to pursue her dreams of working in the big city following her mother’s death, Emma’s life changes when she rescues a small child and a puppy who get trapped in a garage where Emma’s truck has finally breathed its last . The girl’s relieved and grateful grandmother believes Emma has been sent by angels because her family needs temporary help. She offers Emma a job, a good salary and a place to stay until after the holidays. It seems like a Christmas miracle for both of them.

Angels often appear when least expected, but when the most needed. Cynical sheriff and rancher Cole Drayton has heard that all his life, but he’s never been in the market for much else. He can take care of his daughter, his ranch and his family on his own without his meddling mother, but his long protected heart and desire for isolation is no match for a beautiful stranded stranger and a misfit puppy who make his daughter laugh and him feel alive again.

Can unsuspecting hearts intersect at the moment when love and trust is needed most? Anything is possible with the magic of the Christmas season and faith in the Christmas angels.

Wolf Hollow Ebook cover A REBELLIOUS OUTCAST

Cocky. Coy. Wolf shifter. Tabor is the hollow’s only half-breed, scorned and forbidden to use his powers. Constantly overlooked despite his strengths, Tabor believes Sasha is as shortsighted as the rest of the pack until she proves there’s more to her than a blindly obedient lapdog to the council.

A DUTIFUL PUREBLOOD

Spirited, stubborn, and deeply loyal, Sasha feels the pressure from her pack to claim another pureblood, yet no one is brazen enough to defy the elders and toy with her . . . no one besides a sexy, hotheaded half-breed.

AN ATTRACTION THAT THREATENS THE FUTURE OF THE PACK

Bewildered by the deceptively proud and surprisingly sensual Sasha, Tabor would risk everything to claim her. Despite her vanishing bloodline, Sasha can’t resist the charismatic half-breed even as predators threaten their pack and the elders pressure her to breed with a pureblood.

In a fantastical post-apocalyptic world, where only the strongest survive, sometimes trusting the heart is the bravest act of all.

BOOK EXCERPT: “Ugly Beautiful Girl”

October 13, 2017 Leave a Comment

“Ugly Beautiful Girl” by Tracy Krimmer

Excerpt:

“He’s so nice.” Janna takes another cookie and hands one to me as well. “He’s so out of my league, though. Hell, he’s out of most people’s leagues.”

Everyone is out of my league. Between my Pinnochio nose, planet-sized ass, and the scars left behind from the great pimple outbreak of 2015, I’m far down in the lineup for anyone to date. I accepted that a long time ago. After being called a dog more times than I can count, I finally made the decision that maybe everyone is right. I’m not pretty and never will be. The more and more someone refers to you as something, the more likely you are to believe it.

“How is he so nice and his sister is such a jerk?” I don’t think I’ve ever seen two people so different from one another before. His first impression is the complete opposite from Olivia’s.

Janna begins walking so I step in line with her. “Who knows? They were both super popular in school but for different reasons. Her reasons are more X-rated if you catch my drift.”

Sex tape? Pictures online? Favors in the bathroom? I want to know but I also don’t want to gossip about Olivia. I don’t like when people say stuff about me so I don’t want to do it to her. Besides, things like that tend to come back around. I don’t want it to bite me in the ass.

“So this Tyler guy, was he your boyfriend throughout high school?”

“Nah. We dated senior year. That was it. I had one other boyfriend, Grant, freshman and sophomore year. I took junior year off of guys, I guess. Who knows?” She shrugs. “Sometimes I think about quitting guys all together.”

“Like dating girls instead?”

“Maybe. Or not dating at all. I’ll graduate, collect two dozen cats, and call it a life.”

She can’t be serious. I would kill to look like her. Okay, maybe not kill, but I could do some damage if needed. I doubt she has had any experience with being called names, and she’s had two boyfriends to my zero. I picture her strutting down her high school hallway sans book bag—she’s too cool for one. Her books are snug against her hip as she works her way down the hall as everyone glances her way. No. She can’t become a cat lady. If anyone should surrender her life to cats it’s me, and even I won’t do that.

“What about you? Do you have a special man in your life?”

Does my dad count? Probably not what she means. I almost kissed Shawn Solender once in sixth grade but that turned out to be a joke. Another time as a freshman I was supposed to go to Homecoming with Chris Henderson. I sat on the front steps of my house for three hours before I finally admitted to myself he wasn’t coming. On Monday at school everyone made fun of me and pictures were posted all over Instagram. Someone had stopped by and snapped as many shots of me crying as they could. The hashtags were horrible, things such as #loser, #whowoulddateher, #dogface, #dogbreath, #nobody. They got pretty negative, pushed me down to a point I almost didn’t want to get back up, but I did. I keep telling myself they are only words, no matter how much they hurt.

The change begins with me, right? If I’m going to create a better life for myself, I have to be confident. “No. There are a few guys who want to date me, but since I’m here I want to play the field.” I’m sure she sees right through me, and if she does, she doesn’t let on.

“Us hotties have to stick together and stay single.”

Hotties? She’s speaking of herself, not me. I appreciate the gesture, trying to include me in a clique I will never be part of. I’ve been through it long enough. I know the truth.

I’m the ugly girl in the room. I always have been and always will be.

Excerpt:

Prologue

MY EYES WIDEN. Pressing my hand against my chest, I stare, taking in my surroundings. The huge old library in my hometown has always fascinated me. Reaching out my other hand, I touch the books on the shelves, running my fingertips along their spines. Hundreds, upon hundreds, of books that have probably been read hundreds, upon hundreds, of times. Changing so many people’s lives within a few hours or days of being read. So many different stories between those pages.

I gaze at the multitude of fantasies in utter awe.

My fingers trace their way down over the letters of the title on the paperback I’ve picked up. I don’t want to go home yet. I don’t want to hang around on the streets with my school friends. I want to run away, escape, forget about being a teenager, and forget my mum-who cares more about where her next drink is coming from than she does about me.

I need to get out of my head for a while, and this is the only way I know how.

When my dad read to me when I was small, I would get lost in the words, in the story. My imagination would take me away to another world and follow me into my dreams.

And that’s why I’m here now-this is what I need, and this is where I belong. There is where I want to stay, and I do. I spend my days with my nose stuck in a book.

“Links” by Lisa Becker

Blurb: In high school, Charlotte Windham was a typical student going through an awkward phase — glasses and all. She harbored a crush on Garrett Stephens, the teen heartthrob everyone can’t help but fall for during that unfortunate ugly duckling phase of one’s teen years. Flash forward fifteen years later, and Charlotte and Garrett have a second chance encounter at a Los Angeles restaurant. However, this time around, Charlotte has leveled the playing field. She’s a bestselling novelist and no longer “Glasses,” the humiliating nickname Garrett called her in high school. In short, she’s a catch now and, thanks to corrective eye surgery, it’s not just her eyes that see better…so does her heart! Garrett hasn’t fared poorly either, transforming from teen heartbreaker to adult lothario. A now successful professional golfer, he’s recently suffered a major setback in the form of a possible career-ending injury. With the upper hand, can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and for his more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be the perfect fit for him?

EXCERPT

I stand but hesitate when I see Tamika’s disapproving look. Fi notices as well. “It’s okay, T. I got this,” she says, motioning for me to follow her back. When we get to her small office, she closes the door and gestures for me to sit on a red vinyl chair, circa 1972. She stands in front of me, leaning against the desk, and crosses her arms in front of her chest. “Spill!”

“Where should I start?”

“At the beginning.” She walks around to her chair behind the desk and pulls out a yellow legal pad.

For the next half hour, I go over my encounter with Garrett, from the moment we bumped into each other and he didn’t recognize me, to the embarrassment of being called ‘Glasses.’

Fi takes notes furiously on her pad and grins, nods, and cringes at all the appropriate times. When I finish, she puts her pen down and asks, “Do you want the ‘best friend experience’ or the ‘brilliant legal mind experience’?”

I can’t help but laugh. “Are they mutually exclusive?”

“They are,” she says nodding.

“Okay. I want the best friend experience.”

She rushes around from behind the desk, wraps her arms around me soothingly. “I’m so sorry, hon. That sounds just awful. Let’s go get margaritas tomorrow and drown our sorrows in tequila and lime wedges.”

“Thanks, Fi. You’re the best.”

“Anytime,” she says, rubbing my back. She pulls away and walks around to the back of her desk. She sits down and puts the legal pad to the side. I can’t help but notice the writing scrawled across it.

“Just for kicks, what would you have said if I had asked for the ‘brilliant legal mind experience’?”

“You sure you want to know?” Her lips pull into a grim line. Honestly, I’m not sure I do want to know, but curiosity gets the better of me.

“Lay it on me,” I say.

“You need to get laid. Not the kind of bland, missionary style sex you had with Alex. You need hot heat, sweating up the sheets, crazy animal sex.”

I bust out laughing. “That’s your brilliant legal advice. Crazy animal sex?”

“Yes. That’s my brilliant legal advice,” she says with complete seriousness. “Listen, hon, it’s been a year since that insecure jerk Keane dumped you. I have no doubt it’s been even longer since you’ve, well, you know.” She wags her eyebrows up and down. “Before that, you only seriously dated Travis the cheater and Alex who, let’s face it, despite being completely gonzo for you, was a cold fish and a bore. It’s time to stop comparing every man to this fantasy of Garrett Stephens and just do it with him to get it out of your system. He asked you out for Saturday night. Go! Enjoy!”

“I don’t compare every man to Garrett,” I snap at her.

“Don’t you?” she asks, looking down at me sternly.

“I’m offended you even suggested that.” She looks at me, her sharp eyes boring into me, like she can read my every thought and knows I’m full of it. I imagine this is how she bears down on witnesses on the stand. I don’t like being on the receiving end of that look.

“Even if that’s true,” I start and she nods her head, “and I’m not conceding it is.” I point my finger at her. “Even if he did mean to ask me out, there’s no way it’s a good idea. He’s a total player. It would only be one night of fun and I don’t think I could get over that kind of hurt.”

“Then you need to get over it now. Sorry for the tough love, hon, but you need to move past the fantasy of this man and find someone passionate and amazing who is deserving to love you for all of the great things you have to offer including your messed-up childhood and your incredible success today.”

INTERVIEW

Tell us about your newest release: A light-hearted, second chance romance, Links explores what happens when nerdy girl Charlotte Windham reconnects with her unrequited schoolgirl crush, star athlete Garrett Stephens, 15 years after high school.

Did you have an unrequited crush in high school? I’m not too ashamed to admit I had such a fierce crush on a boy, I willingly sat with him in the bathroom at parties while he puked up wine coolers, just so I could spend time with him. Thankfully, that soul-crushing time in my life in over, but I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if I came upon that secret crush today as a confident, successful woman.

Can you tell us more about the main character(s)? Charlotte Windham was a typical ugly duckling in high school — glasses and all. Highly intelligent and immensely talented, she’s become a breakout success with her best-selling novel, The Crossing Guard.  In school, she harbored an unrequited crush on Garrett Stephens, the teen heartthrob and star athlete who’s gone on to become a professional golfer suffering a possible career-ending injury. The book explores what happens when these two former classmates have a chance encounter in a Los Angeles restaurant, 15 years after high school. With the upper hand, can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and for his more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be the perfect fit for him?

Imagine Links would be turned into a movie, who would you cast for the main characters? I would love to see someone with the emotional range and depth of Maggie Gyllenhaal to play Charlotte. I think she could make her come across as vulnerable, successful, intelligent and passionate. For Garrett, we would need someone who is classically handsome and oozes charm. Matt Bomer, who pulled that off perfectly on White Collar comes to mind.  If he’s not available, let’s just say, I would love to be at the casting call for that role.

You have also published other books, can you tell us more about them? I’m most known for the Click trilogy comprised of Click: An Online Love Story, Double Click and Right Click.  The series follows a young woman’s search for love online in Los Angeles with the entire series unfolding in emails between our heroine, her friends and her hilarious dates. Fraught with BCC’s, FWD’s and inadvertent Reply to All’s, readers will cheer, laugh, cry and cringe following the email exploits of Renee and friends. And ultimately, they will root for Renee to “click” with the right man.

What do you have in the works? I’ve just wrapped up a contemporary romance called Starfish, which examines the unlikely relationship between a regular girl and a touring guitarist in a band. When it comes to romance, you just can’t pass up the idea of falling in love with a rock star.

“The Captain’s Daughter” by Meg Mitchell Moore

Blurb: For fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Emma Straub comes an emotionally gripping novel about a woman who returns to her hometown in coastal Maine and finds herself pondering the age-old question of what could have been.

Growing up in Little Harbor, Maine, the daughter of a widowed lobsterman, Eliza Barnes could haul a trap and row a skiff with the best of them. But she always knew she’d leave that life behind. Now that she’s married, with two kids and a cushy front-row seat to suburban country club gossip in an affluent Massachusetts town, she feels adrift.

When her father injures himself in a boating accident, Eliza pushes the pause button on her own life to come to his aid. But when she arrives in Maine, she discovers her father’s situation is more dire than he let on. Eliza’s homecoming is further complicated by the reemergence of her first love–and memories of their shared secret. Then Eliza meets Mary Brown, a seventeen-year-old local who is at her own crossroad, and Eliza can’t help but wonder what her life would have been like if she’d stayed.

Filled with humor, insight, summer cocktails, and gorgeous sunsets, The Captain’s Daughter is a compassionate novel about the life-changing choices we make and the consequences we face in their aftermath.
