Don’t Give Up – The Writing Journey

April 13, 2011 12 Comments

Yesterday I was watching Katie Couric on “The Early Show” who was promoting her new book, “The Best Advice I Ever Got.” When she began talking about best-selling author Kathryn Stockett, I was amazed to learn how many times she was rejected before she had brilliant first book “The Help” published.

When I heard the number, it made me admire the talented writer even more.  I love how dedicated she was to her goals — and her dreams!  Above all, I love how she powered through her rejections, which I believe had made her stronger.  She has inspired me so much, and now I know that however many rejections I get, I will be published!

I wanted to share three links to Kathryn Stockett with you, as I hope to inspire you and your writing!

Now, I hope you are ready to go after your dreams and write, write, write!  Good luck with your writing journey.

Our Characters

April 12, 2011 11 Comments

When writing, how much are your characters like or unlike you?

I often find that my Heroine’s words and actions are similar to mine, though only when I’m in a good mood.  When I’m not, it’s like someone else is in charge, and the Heroine has a voice of her own.  I must admit that during these times, I’m very delighted that the female MC has finally spoken.

Moods can definitely add a little spunk to our writing, spice to our characters and allow the shy writer to not hold anything back.  There have been times that I’ve been frustrated about writing a certain scene, or even my mind goes blank, and I just write my way out of it.  (It might not be the best idea, but editing can always be done).

Now, writing about characters is not something that I enjoy at all, but I think that’s because I’m not a fan of talking about myself, however describing them is what I find fun.  As for my Heroine, I write her to appear like I wish I looked, make her stronger than I am, and make her appealing to my readers.

How do you write your characters?  Are they like you, or not?

Friday Review

April 8, 2011 2 Comments

After subscribing to several blogs, I’ve been noticing a trend of reviewing books.  Since I love to read and write, I thought why not start reviewing the books that I want to read.  Beginning next Friday, I will begin posting Chick Lit book reviews on MY WEBSITE, under the “Book Reviews” tab.

Who will be checking in to see what I’m reading?  🙂

A Heroine of A Lifetime

April 8, 2011 Leave a Comment

Dame Elizabeth Taylor

Dame Elizabeth Taylor died on March 23rd.  It was a very sad day for the world.  The Academy Award and Golden Globe winner was known for her eight marriages to seven different men, her dazzling jewelry and charity work.

When I was a young kid, I remember loving her movies.  At that time, I wasn’t a big fan of really long movies, but the movie “Giant,” was combined into two VHS tapes — I watched that movie over and over.  After that, I was hooked as an Elizabeth Taylor fan.  From “National Velvet,” “Father of the Bride,” “A Place in the Sun,” “Butterfield 8,” “Cleopatra,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf,” and last, but certainly not least and my personal favorite, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” she worked her heart out on every movie she made.

As a writer, I think that Elizabeth Taylor is the epitome of what a classic heroine should be.  They should have it all – brains, charm, radiance, sexuality, just to name a few, just like the legendary Elizabeth.

If you haven’t seen anything by Elizabeth Taylor, I challenge you to watch her movies and see the world is now missing.  If you have seen her movies, watch them again and fall in love all over again…

Writing Prompts

April 7, 2011 6 Comments

Writing prompts — they are something I have a love/hate relationship with.  Almost every single day, writing prompts are all over the internet, whether it be in a blog form, a brainstorming website, or even through an Email.  Wait, through an Email? Yes!  While I was scrolling through my Facebook account, I saw this and thought it was brilliant!  HERE is the brilliant article about writing prompts from an Email.

Happy Writing!

What I’ve Learned…The Second Time Around

April 5, 2011 6 Comments

Okay, so since I’ve finally moved and everything is back to a somewhat kind of normal (FINALLY HAVING INTERNET), so I’m happy in my Writing World once again, and it feels great!

Now that I’m writing again, I see the hunger, the need and the passion for writing coming out stronger than ever before.  In some ways, it’s that powerful drive I had when I began Redefined Dreams. When I was writing my first book, there were  days when I had no idea what I was doing, whatsoever.  Having known what I know now about the pressures, the stresses, the joys, the sleepless nights that come with writing a book, I wouldn’t trade any of it.  I find it funny that I usually work better after knowing what and how things will go, and what’s going to happen.  Is that odd?  Anyway, the second time around, I feel more prepared for what’s ahead, and am willing to deal with what ever situation I’m in, I will write, Write, WRite, WRIte, WRITe, WRITE!!

Chick-Lit: From A Man’s POV

April 4, 2011 2 Comments

Earlier this afternoon, my brother called and asked me if I wanted or needed anything at Barnes & Noble.  At first I told him no, but then decided to make it a challenge, testing what a man thinks is Chick Lit, so I then told him to bring me a Chick-Lit.  He mumbled something about Romance books and about “smut” books.  After we hung up with him, I was a little worried about what he might come back with, but had complete confidence in him.

When he did over, he brought me a Chick-Lit!  My husband asked him if he had anyone help him, and he said no.  He then told us that he picked the book because of “the colors, the font, the specific words in that particular order.”  I think he did a very well job about picking up the sub-genre of Romance, and do find it very interesting how he explained, especially by the “colors” and “font.”  He was very observant, noticing that Chick-Lit’s are usually very colorful, to attract (mostly) female readers.  As for the font, he made another observation by commenting on the font.  Squiggly lines and curly fonts (usually) attract women, compared to the upright text of “men’s books” by John Grisham, for example.  Overall, I am very proud of my little brother, who isn’t as much of a book lover as I am, that he could identify the genre that his sister will hopefully be a member of.

The book my wonderful brother picked for me is “The Overnight Socialite,” by Bridie Clark.  I look forward to reading this book and having it be the third book that I plan to review, which is a new feature on my blog, under the Book Review tab.

Book 2

April 3, 2011 2 Comments

Hello, Book #2 (Somewhere Down In Texas)! As I begin writing you, I want you to know that I am going to write you very differently, than with Book #1 (Redefined Dreams). I’m going to do my best to organize you as best as I know how, pay closer attention your characters and words, though I will care for you just as much, as I did when I wrote my first book. Also, this time, I will be using Scrivener, which I’m hoping will be helpful!

I feel though as if I’ve grown from way back when, from when I first began, in March of 2010. Whether it be knowing the difference between “passed” and “past,” the layout of writing a MS, or learning to deal with the daily pressures of getting it done, this time I know what to expect. I’m willing to take the challenges that are ahead, and even push myself more, whereas I didn’t in the year process of the first book.

My goal for finishing Somewhere Down In Texas is December 12th…

Inspiring Blogs

March 30, 2011 2 Comments

The carpet installers have been here for about an hour and a half, and while I have boxes behind me that are begging to be opened and glassware that is staring me in the face, I’m sitting here at my new kitchen island, reading writing blogs…though I know that I should be writing Book #2!

I’m wondering if it is really so bad that I’m reading instead of working, but I see it as being a kind of inspiration, maybe even a little nudge. I have come across some wonderful, inspiring and powerful blogs that all have one thing in common, they all make me want to write! I have learned a lot from these bloggers (whether they are authors, editors, or even book lovers). Since I have completed “Redefined Dreams,” I’m looking forward to maybe trying to go about Book #2 in a different way, who knows…
