BOOK REVIEW: “Flying by the Seat of my Knickers” by Eliza Watson

“Flying by the Seat of my Knickers” by Eliza Watson

Blurb: Why run from your troubles when you can fly instead? When Caity Shaw is fired from her first job that doesn’t require an elf uniform, her older sister, Rachel, an event planner, hires her to work a meeting in Dublin. Caity jumps at the opportunity to travel abroad and escape her pathetic life. However, even four thousand miles from home, there’s no avoiding debt collectors, an overbearing mother, and haunting memories of a controlling ex. While in Dublin, Caity suffers a series of humiliating mishaps, causing her to lose even more faith in herself. Caity struggles to earn Rachel’s respect—and to keep Declan, her hot Irish coworker, at arm’s length. Declan repeatedly saves Caity’s butt and helps boost her self-confidence, making it difficult to keep her distance from the charming womanizer. When Declan helps her research her Irish grandmother, Caity discovers the mysterious past of the courageous woman she barely knew might hold the answers to her future.

My Review: First of all, I loved the cover of this book. Doesn’t it just say, “READ ME!”? “Flying by the Seat of My Knickers” was an adorable page turner! At the beginning, I was on the edge of my seat to see how Caity would handle herself as an event planner without having any experience, having been one who would take any job–even ones where she’d be wearing hideous and embarrassing costumes. There was definite tension between her and her sister, Rachel, but overtime, I loved seeing Caity gain more confidence, showing her sister and Gretchen, a right-hand employee, along with handsome Declan that she can be a take charge kind of woman. I found Caity’s strength to be very refreshing, even when she wanted to give up. Also, being a huge fan of the movie P.S. I Love You, I loved the references the author added in, (this movie made me fall in love with Ireland-setting romance books).

If you’re looking for a heartwarming read, leaving you wanting more, I highly recommend this witty and fun read, (I’m eagerly anticipating the next book in the series).

I give “Flying by the Seat of my Knickers” 4.5 stars!

EXCERPT

Someone had to do this, and it sure as hell wasn’t going to be Adam. I breathed in and closed my eyes, only opening them as I exhaled and put one foot in front of the other. The key was hot from the heat of my body as it shook its way into the door knob. The metal clunked, and the wooden door swung open, leaving me staring at the empty room once filled with happiness. My eyes rushed over it as my mind flashed with memories, and my feet somehow continued in–all the way to Bobby’s bedroom door. My chest constricted and stars popped in my vision as I swung it open. I found myself blinking rapidly as my eyes wandered the room, stopping on the dresser where frames contained pictures of Adam and me, Bobby and me, the three of us, and then Tara and Bobby. My feet yet again propelled me forward, but I stopped as I breathed in, choking on the air.

My body warmed as my chin trembled and I breathed in again.

There it was again.

Bobby. The room smelled like him.

My eyelashes fluttered against my cheeks as the scent encircled me. Bath and Body Works’ Twilight Woods. The cologne we picked together when we were twelve. For fifteen years he’d worn it, even after Tara told him she hated it.

My eyes opened and moved to the hockey jersey hanging half out of a drawer–exactly where he left it that morning. My knees shook, and I found myself sitting on the bed staring at it. I reached forward, and the worn fabric embraced me as I brought it up to my chest. I pursed my lips together as the tears gathered and I pulled the jersey over my head, engulfing myself in his scent–it was embedded into this clothes despite constant washing. In my memories, his laughter carried through the room. It wasn’t the first time I wore one of his jerseys. I closed my eyes and curled into a ball on his bed.

“So you remember it too?” Bobby’s voice reached my ears, and the darkness behind my lids drifted away, parting until it was him and me in the tree house. I sat up on the bed, looking at him as he smirked at me from the edge of it. “See the thing is, I imagined it like this–you know? You practically naked;” his teeth ran over his bottom lip as his eyes ran up my legs, barely covered by my sleeping shorts. “in my jersey.”

He moved forward and his hand cupped my chin as his thumb caught a tear. “You weren’t crying in my fantasies, though. You cry so much now, Riv. I don’t want you to cry.”

I closed my eyes as my vision blurred from the weight of them, burdened by the false warmth of his touch.

“I’ve lost myself just as much as I’ve lost you,” I whispered, trying to memorize the feeling of his soft hands against my skin. So caring and loving when everything seemed so cold now. “All my dreams are shattered without you.”

Bobby’s hands reached for my face, turning it, so I was looking at him. He was beginning to waiver in and out, and panic burned its way up my throat.

He was going to leave.

But this was so real.

“Please don’t leave,” I said, and the tears and clenching of my throat made the words as physically painful as they were emotional.

“I thought all my dreams shattered when I found out Adam was with you–and it was over for me–that I didn’t have any more chances. My dreams realigned, though, Riv–they changed, refit into even better dreams. I expect you to do the same,” he said, and he was fading faster; his body just a wisp and his touch a mere warmth with nothing substantial behind it.

“But Adam–“

“You’ll figure out what to do, it might be hard, but in the end, it will work out. You and him are what’s left of me. Remember that. Together you make me whole,” he said, and his lips reached for my cheek, sending heat through my body as he disappeared.

“Bobby!” I yelled, and suddenly I was sitting straight up in the bed sobbing, the warmth of his lips against my cheek a stinging pain. I leaned back, pulling my knees to my chest and cried until the darkness consumed me.

This time, Bobby’s warmth didn’t return.

EXCERPT: “Handbags and Hooligans” by Laina Turner

Handbags & Hooligans

“Handbags and Hooligans” by Laina Turner

Blurb: Presley went to Vegas to watch her friend Anna get married and the event turned into solving the mystery of her brothers girlfriend disappearance. But Ashley wasn’t exactly the school teacher she appeared to be. Who was she and was she kidnapped?

EXCERPT

“I called Morgan this morning when I was looking for Ashley,” Jesse explained to Jared and me. “Morgan, this is my sister, Presley, and her friend Jared. No. That’s why we’re here. We wanted to see if anyone here had heard from her.”

Morgan nodded hi to us. “No we haven’t, and she needs to call soon. Mr. Strong is livid Ashley didn’t show up and hasn’t called. She’s about to lose her job. Have you talked to Angela?”

“No. Why? Has Angela heard from Ashley?” Jesse asked.

“No, but she told me today during lunch that someone called the front office looking for Ashley and left a number. Maybe if you got the number you could call?”

“Thanks, Morgan. Have the cops been here yet?”

“No. Should I be expecting them? What’s going on?

Jesse looked at me, and I shook my head. I didn’t think we should be telling too much information.

“I just called them about Ashley and wondered if they had been by yet.”

“I understand. Listen call me the minute you hear from her. We’re all worried sick.”

“Will do. Thanks again, Morgan. C’mon guys, let’s go find Angela.” Jesse started off toward the building.

“This sure brings back memories,” Jared whispered to me as we walked into the elementary school. “Nothing has changed. This is exactly as I remember it from the school we went to. Just smaller. It even smells the same.”

I agreed, looking at the art–lined hallways and grabbing a view of the classrooms as we went in search of the office.

“Over there, guys,” Jesse said, pointing to the sign that said ‘office’ above it. “Angela is the assistant to the principal; she’ll be in there. Let’s just hope she hasn’t left already.” Crossing the hall in large strides, he pushed open the door and stepped in. I could see him start to panic a little, as he looked around not seeing Angela. “Is Angela still here?”

“She sure is,” a plump blonde woman in her mid–thirties replied. “She just walked back to the copy room. She will be back in a sec.”

“Thank goodness,” Jesse said with a sigh, turning to Jared and me. The blonde looked at us sort of strangely, but they were spared any other conversation by Angela strolling back into the waiting room.

“Jesse,” Angela said, surprised. “What brings you here?” She was a striking woman, probably late twenties, dressed in what one would consider a typical teacher’s outfit. Gray trousers and a pink sweater set. Conservative, yet attractive.

“I’m looking for Ashley. Morgan said someone called for her and left a number, and that you might be able to give it to me.”

“I take it you haven’t heard from her, then?” Angela said, looking concerned. She started to rifle through some papers and Post–its sitting on the counter.

“No. Neither has anyone else, it seems.”

“I can’t imagine where it would be. Now I know I had that number sitting right here.”

Presley looked at Jesse, who was getting more and more anxious as Angela looked for the number. He seemed about ready to jump out of his skin.

“Ah–ha. Here we go. It’s a seven–oh–two number, so it’s local.”

I could see Jesse’s surge of excitement. He seemed barely able to hold himself back from snatching the paper out of her hand. Hopefully this would be the key to finding where the hell Ashley was.

“Thanks, Angela,” he said as he turned and rushed out the door.

“Let me know when you hear from her,” Angela said to our backs as we followed him. “And tell her to call us here ASAP. She’s in hot water.”

“Slow down, Jesse,” I called. Jared and I were almost running to keep up with him. Jesse ignored me as he pulled his cell out of his pocket. “Jesse..,” I started to say.

“Shhhh,” he said, turning and giving me an irritated look.

By the time we made it to the parking lot, Jesse was leaning against the car with the phone to his ear. I could hear it ringing. The other end must have picked up because Jared and I watched as the blood drained from his face. Pulling the phone away, he just stared at it and disconnected.

“Jesse, what’s wrong?”

He just looked at me, his mouth opening and shutting with no words coming out.

“Dammit, Jesse. Who answered the phone?”

He shook his head as if to clear his thoughts. “It was the number to The Pink Pony.”

“That doesn’t sound so bad.” I glanced at Jared, eyebrows raised.

Jared looked back and just shook his head. “You are so naïve sometimes. That… sounds like what one would call a gentlemen’s club.”

“Oh.”

“Jared’s right,” Jesse said. “The Pink Pony is an upscale gentlemen’s club on the Vegas strip. Why would someone from there be calling Ashley at work?”

I didn’t know the answer to that, but I guessed it might explain those skimpy clothes and costumes in Ashley’s apartment. I could tell Jesse had come to the same conclusion by the pained look in his face. But how could that be without Jesse’s knowledge? That seemed like a pretty big secret to hide. This whole situation was getting stranger and stranger.

“Get in the car,” Jesse said. “We’re going to find out who at The Pink Pony knows Ashley and why they are calling her.”

I wanted to argue because I wasn’t at all sure the answer Jesse got would be one he wanted. But there really wasn’t any other choice. I looked at Jared and could tell he was thinking the same thing. What could I do? Jesse was right on one front. We needed answers, and this would be one way to get them.

There were a fair number of cars in the parking lot of the strip club considering it was the middle of the day. Although, I hadn’t ever been to a strip club, much less in the middle of the day, so maybe this was normal. “I didn’t expect it to be so busy at this hour,” I whispered to Jared.

“People come here for lunch.”

AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Randi M. Sherman, and EXCERPT of “The Lobby”

May 18, 2016 1 Comment

randi m sherman

About Randi M. Sherman: A native Californian, raised in “the valley,” Randi moved to San Francisco decades ago and more recently makes her home in California’s wine country. Trying her hand at country living Randi describes herself the Eva Gabor of the Sonoma/Napa area.

Until Randi’s huge success as an author, or until potato chips are considered a vegetable and wine is accepted as a fruit, Randi continues to split her time between writing, laughing and actually enjoying her life  with more undesirable tasks such as being a stuffy corporate-type using her Bachelors of Science Degree from Chapman University.

INTERVIEW

In five words, describe yourself: Creative, Devoted, Risk-Taker, Brave and (if Risk-Taker is considered one word) fortunate.

Tell us about your writing/editing/publishing routine: Coffee, write when it hits me. I keep a working copy open on my PC all day everyday, and read dialogue out loud. When editing – I read the  entire book paragraph by paragraph and ask myself if it says exactly what I intended.  I have to admit that I want to control every aspect of the publishing process, so I spend most of that time trying keep to it moving and calm myself. I also try to focus on promotion planning.

Have you always wanted to be an author? I was a stand up comedienne in Los Angeles, the did improvisational theater in San Francisco – when I didn’t become rich and famous doing that – my humor took another form. Being a writer wasn’t planned – but I’m glad it happened – it makes me a better and more thoughtful person.

Do you have any writing rituals? Hmm, that’s a good question. I’m not sure we should probably ask the people I live with – I’m certain they could point out something quirky.

Hard/paperbacks or eBooks? I prefer Paperbacks, I like to hold something in my hands. Its the same with newspapers. I do make my books available in all formats to reader – because everyone has their own preference.

What is the best advice you would give to new authors? I’ve learned that a writer needs to take off her shoes, untuck her blouse, raise her hands up over her head and run full speed down the hill. A writer need to let go of all inhibitions and fears and “go for it.”

How do you come up with the titles of your books? I wish I could tell you take there is some exhaustive research and focus group activity – but the titles simply come to me – because, perhaps they are so simple.

Which author would you love to meet? Unfortunately she has passed away – Nora Ephron because she could make the mundane entertaining and poignant.

What is your favorite word? “Yes”

Is the social media more of a help or a hinder? Its a good option to getting the word out. However, recently I read the book Contagious that suggested that word of mouth is the most effective method. As much as I try, I’m still a little social media challenged anyway.

What do you want readers to take away? As I developed all of the many characters in THE LOBBY I created a history of each as well as the full reason why they were in THE LOBBY -it occurred to me what the purpose of the book – I want readers to realized that if we all just put down our phones and look up there are people standing right in front of use, with full histories and reasons for being where they are at that moment. Take a minute and acknowledge and maybe even appreciate the person standing in front of you.

EXCERPT

Slump-shouldered and dizzy from exhaustion, Peggy stretched her neck, took a deep breath and rubbed her eyes, willing herself to be awake and perky. Dressed for the day in her high-rise, poly-blend walking shorts, a muted-colored Madras blouse, and an oversized pastel pink Jazzercise visor, she stood in the hotel lobby. It was only 6:00 a.m. Looking out through the front windows of the hotel, she could see the streets were still practically empty, and even the sun was having second thoughts about starting the day. Waking up before six o’clock in the morning was just too early, especially on a vacation.

“Hank, dear,” she said sweetly, holding a Mylar-wrapped breakfast bar. “Have one of these energy grain bars. It has fiber.”

He snatched it from her, peeled back the wrapper, then shoved it into his mouth and ate it in just two bites. Crumbs flying, he said, “Damned right. I’m not going to wait in line at some overpriced coffee shop for a plate of twelve-dollar eggs. We can have an early lunch.” He spotted a basket of shiny red apples on the registration desk. “Mary Margaret, go get a few of those too. They will tide us over.”

Peggy’s movements are hindered by the beige naugahyde pocket-for-everything purse that was slung over her head and shoulder, crossing her chest. The purse strap was too short for it to be worn this way. It cut tightly between her breasts and rested at her side, just below her armpit, causing her arm to hang at a forty-five degree angle from her body.

“You can never be too careful, Mary Margaret.” Hank checked the positioning of her bag. “I hear there is a lot of purse snatching going on in this city.” He stood back to take a look at her. “Maybe you should put on your sweater—you look like a tourist. You’re just inviting trouble.”

It was big talk from Hank, who was dressed in brighter than-white walking shoes with Velcro closures for efficiency, an AARP fanny pack, and his new short-sleeved sport shirt which was tucked tightly into his underwear beneath his sans-a-belt, high-water polyester dress slacks, replete with a bulging back pocket due to an overstuffed wallet. Clutching his cartoonish city map like it was the map to the Holy Grail, Hank marched toward the morning clerk who was standing behind the front desk. He pointed at Peggy’s feet. “Pick ‘em up and lay ‘em down. We have a lot to do today, and it’s already after six.” With purpose, Hank asked the desk clerk Candice, “Is the conger . . . conseer here?”

Another typical tourist, Candice thought. Ready to go at the crack of dawn. Should I tell him that with the exception of a Starbucks, nothing in this city is open before nine? “Good morning, sir,” Candice smiled. “I see you are up early. I’m sorry sir, but Philippe, the concierge, does not get in until nine o’clock. Perhaps I can help you with something?”

“Yes, you can. We have a heavy day of sightseeing ahead of us, and I want to be efficient about it.” Hank slapped the map down on the counter.

“Okay, I’ll see what I can do. What would you like to do today?” Candice smiled again, as she was trained to do.

“Well,” Hank began, “today we want to walk across theGolden Gate Bridge, ride on a cable car, go to the Cable Car Museum, Fisherman’s Wharf, that curvy Lombardo Street, Golden Gate Park, the Legion of Honor, the Cannery, and Alcatraz.”

Peggy tapped Hank on the shoulder. “And don’t forget Union Square, Hank.”

“You can shop at home,” He called over his shoulder. Turning back to Candice, “What’s the best route? I’d like to work from furthest to closest.” Hank was all about efficiency. “It’s all about organization,” he explained. If a household task could be wrapped up in five minutes he found a way to do it in four. “In the military . . .” Hank would say and then fill in the blank with the most Hank-a-fied, time-efficient way to do something. He meant well, but Peggy knew that he usually made it up as he went along.

Peggy had always hated being called Mary Margaret, Hun, or Marge, but Hank insisted. She endured Hank’s bossy, blow-hard-headedness all for the sake of keeping him calm. They had been married for thirty-five years, and she figured it was probably her fault that he was the way he was. After all, she had been raised to be agreeable. But she secretly wanted to break free of the middle of the row, middle class, very average, superefficient life she was leading and do something wild, something unplanned. Thursday night Bingo just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Anything new or different would be welcome. Dining out somewhere other than the two places in town where Hank was comfortable and where he didn’t spend twenty minutes raving about the “cost of things”— that would be good. Sex with the lights on or for longer than two minutes would be a welcome change. But neither would be enough. Peggy craved the life that she saw on the morning and afternoon talk shows. The life where people were frivolous and chatty, who drank champagne any day, for any occasion, not just at 11:55 PM on December 31st. Wearing a piece of clothing that wasn’t labeled “wash-n-wear” or blended with some fabric that’s name ended in -ester or -oline would be heaven after years in flammable synthetic clothing.

COVER REVEAL: “At This Moment” by Karen Cimms

May 17, 2016 1 Comment

COVER AtThisMoment_6X9_FC

“At This Moment” by Karen Cimms

Blurb: Sometimes life gives you what you need, even if you don’t believe you deserve it.

Kate Daniels wants it all—a big, crazy life, lots of kids, and an adoring husband. Someday. For now, she’ll be happy just to survive her first semester of college. Billy McDonald wants it all, too. Since the day he got his first guitar, he’s had one goal—to prove he’s worth something. His dream is so close, he can almost touch it.

Thrown together during a freak snowstorm, Kate and Billy’s lives become permanently entwined. On the outside, they have nothing in common, but scars aren’t always visible and abuse doesn’t always leave a mark. Kate keeps the pain of her past buried, while Billy carries his like a weapon.

In spite of finding love, Billy continues to be haunted by his childhood and tempted by the excesses of the music industry. He struggles to keep his career on track and his inner demons at bay, until one night, he makes a mistake that could cost him everything. Kate may have found her happily ever after, but for Billy, the nightmare has just begun.

Set against a backdrop of heavy metal and emerging grunge, At This Moment is the first book in the Of Love and Madness trilogy. A love story that unfolds over twenty-five years, it’s the tale of two damaged people trying to make their way in the world without destroying themselves or each other in the process.

EXCERPT

Billy didn’t say a word when he picked them up at the subway station, and he did little more than grunt when he dropped Joey off at his station a few blocks later. He remained quiet as they drove through Brooklyn, over the Williamsburg Bridge, and into Lower Manhattan. Kate tried several times to engage him in conversation, but he just stared straight ahead, saying nothing.

After they pulled into the parking lot behind their apartment, he turned off the van and sat drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. She waited until he got out, then followed, expecting to help carry his bags.

“I got it,” he snapped.

“Fine.” It was her turn to get angry. She’d only agreed to do this video because of him. Plus it was his idea—or Christa’s, the little blond weasel—that no one know they were a couple. It wasn’t her fault she caused a stir. Not totally.

She bolted ahead, letting the door slam shut as he approached, and stomped up the stairs and down the hall to their apartment. Throwing her bag on the couch, she went into the bathroom to take off her makeup.

When she came out, Billy was sitting on the bed.

“You think you’re pretty funny, don’t you?”

“Me? I think I’m hilarious.”

As she stormed past him, Billy grabbed her by the hand and pulled her into his lap, locking his arms around her. She sat stiffly, staring straight ahead, her jaw tight, not willing to look at him.

“I’m sorry,” he said finally, pressing his forehead into her shoulder. “I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at me.”

“That makes two of us.”

“I’m an idiot. I shouldn’t have talked you into this, and I shouldn’t have agreed to keep you a secret.”

“Are you saying that because you didn’t like Bailey hitting on me or the other guys looking at me?”

“I didn’t like any of it. I also didn’t like you having to walk in without me and leave without me, even with Joey—who hates me, by the way.”

“He doesn’t hate you.”

He snorted. “I’ll call Christa tomorrow. Tell her we’re not doing this.”

“The video?”

“No. That we have to do. But I’m not making believe we’re not a couple. I don’t see the need for it. I’m not in this for the women. I’m a musician, not a gigolo.”

“You don’t want to be both?”

He shook his head.

“Aww,” she purred. “Too bad.”

He looked up, surprised. “What does that mean?”

“You’ll see.”

Although she loves pigeons, she is terrified of pet birds, scary movies and Mr. Peanut.

Karen is married to her favorite lead guitar player. Her children enjoy tormenting her with countless mean-spirited pranks because they love her, or so they say. She currently lives in Northeast Pennsylvania, although her heart is usually in Maine.

“At This Moment” is her debut novel.

“Been Searching for You” by Nicole Evelina

Been Searching for You eBook Cover Large**Blurb:

Annabeth is a hopeless romantic who believes in soul mates. In fact, she’s been writing to hers each year on her birthday since she was 16.

Now, at 34, she’s still holding out hope of finding Mr. Right even though he’d be fighting an uphill battle to gain her trust, thanks to a traumatic experience years before that’s left her unable to commit.

When Annabeth meets a handsome literature professor named Alex on her 34th birthday, she thinks her quest may finally be at an end. Things don’t quite go as planned, so Annabeth resolves to do everything she can over the next year to find the unknown recipient of her letters.  But blind dates, Meetup events and online singles sites have nothing on what fate has in store for her when a co-worker unexpectedly quits and Annabeth finds herself working in close quarters with both Alex and her long ago ex, Nick. Fighting her attraction to one and loathing for the other, Annabeth is forced to face all of her old insecurities while keeping an eye on a scheming frienemy who may derail her hopes and dreams.

Written in the tradition of Bridget Jones’ Diary, Kim Gruenfelder’s A Total Waste of Makeup, and Melissa Pimental’s Love By The Book, it shows that love on the sweet side can exist for the modern girl, if only she’s willing to trust herself and search hard enough.

Been Searching for You was the winner of the 2015 Romance Writers of America Great Expectations and Golden Rose contests.

“Finding London” by Ellie Wade

Blurb: London Wright thought she’d been in love before, but she hadn’t—not even close.

Then, she met him.

Rugged and gorgeous, Loïc Berkeley, is everything she’s ever wanted. Getting him to notice her was a challenge, but keeping his love is proving to be more difficult.

London is used to getting what she wants, so loving someone like Loïc is a humbling and somewhat terrifying experience. For everything she has in her life, he’s the one thing she can’t bear to lose.

Loïc never wanted love. He views it as an unneeded distraction that always ends in disappointment, causing nothing but pain.

Then, he met her.

Spoiled but witty and breathtakingly beautiful, London Wright is his undoing. From the moment he laid eyes on her, he knew his life would never be the same. Though he tries to fight it, he finds himself falling for her.

Loïc has lived a life full of sorrow, but finding London brings him rare happiness. Though his feelings for her are strong, is what they have powerful enough to break the cycle of his past?

When one is destined for heartbreak and loss, can love really change anything?

EXCERPT

“Listen, Loïc,” she starts to say, her voice sweet and kind.

“Just save it, London,” I snap before I can stop myself. My walls and ability to be an eternal asshole are back in full effect.

Her eyes widen, but she quickly composes herself. She stands on her tiptoes and gives me a small kiss on the cheek. My body stiffens at the contact. She turns to leave, and her hand grabs the knob of the door.

But then, almost on instinct, she looks back at me. “I was just going to say that I really want to be fucked up together. And whatever reason you have for thinking you don’t deserve someone to love you is wrong. I see you, Loïc, more than you think I do. You’re a good person, and you deserve way more in this life than you’re allowing yourself to have. I don’t know why you’re punishing yourself, but you should stop. Maybe I’m not the person you need, but you need to find the one who is. Everyone needs love, even a big, bad warrior. Not everything in life should be a battle.”

EXCERPT

Coming down the stairs is the most mouthwatering, incredibly gorgeous man I’ve ever seen. Gage was good looking when I knew him as a teenager; but the man standing before me now is absolutely breathtaking. Gage is about half way down the staircase leading into the foyer when he looks at his mother, and stops, realizing she isn’t alone. His eyes turn to me and heat spreads over my whole body. His gaze slides up from the open toe heels on my feet and work their way up my bare legs, then to my hips, then up to my breasts, then finally to my face – where once his eyes meet mine – his look of total appreciation and enjoyment of the female body slowly dissolve into a realization.

A recognition.

Our gazes never shift from one another and all of a sudden the air in the foyer becomes thick. Judy cuts the silence by saying, “Gage, you rem-…”

“Laken,” he finishes her thought, almost breathlessly, with his eyes never leaving mine.

“…Yes – Laken,” she continues. “Laken was just leaving, she brought over your favorite dinner – Mrs. Bennett’s lasagna – that’s what you smell and I need to go check it. Laken, thank you again. I will see you Friday at the luncheon.”

I break my attention from Gage to Ms. Scott – who is already on her way to the kitchen – I call to her, “You’re welcome.” The voice leaving my body doesn’t sound like mine – it’s too soft, too breathy and too sexy. I slowly turn my attention back to the movement on the stair case. Taking in the bare feet slowly sauntering down the stairs in my direction, my eyes travel up distressed, washed out denim clad legs. The unbelted waistband of the jeans hangs low on his waist and meets a tight gray t-shirt, drawing attention to chiseled abs and an athletically defined muscular chest. Rippled arms lead to broad shoulders and a thick neck. I notice slightly long ebony hair, still damp from a shower. His square, sculpted jaw is shadowed with a couple of days’ worth of unshaved growth and frames the most delicious set of lips I’ve seen on a man. As he reaches where I’m standing – my eyes find his again. His irises are an intense blue. The boy I knew melted away into this sinfully gorgeous creature standing before me.

My name on his lips still hangs thick in the air and chokes me.
