The Right Design

COVER REVEAL: The Right Design by Isabella Louise Anderson

January 12, 2014 13 Comments

Hello, Family, Friends and Followers!

Today, it brings me great joy to share with you the cover of my debut novel, The Right Design! Before I reveal it, let me explain how it came about:

During the process of editing my book, I would look at other covers from time to time, imagining what my cover would look like. Every new author does that, right? I’d make note of the designer, then keep on editing because if I didn’t have a completed manuscript, I wouldn’t have a cover, either. One night while I was chatting with a few ladies in my Chick Lit Goddesses Facebook group, an author showed us her cover. It was right then and there that I knew I wanted that specific designer. Come to find out, it was the same designer who created a few other covers that I loved. My mind was made up — Scarlett Rugers would design my debut novel! I knew I wanted a beach, a simple shell that goes along with the story line, and my name in purple. After filling the forms and having a delightful phone conversation with Scarlett, I was excited to see her ideas. When I received the first round of designs, it was hard for me to get over seeing the title, but more-so, my name on the cover. After printing them, that night, I lined them up on the floor and marked what I did and didn’t like. It became to where I couldn’t make up my mind, so my husband taped them to our refrigerator. Often, this led me to forget what I was coming to get, because I was too busy starting at Scarlett’s work. After a few weeks of emailing each other, Scarlett emailed me the final cover and I was in awe over it. Being my first book, it’s everything I’ve ever imagined it being.

I hope you like it as much as I do!

The Right Design by Isabella Louise Anderson

Blurb: Interior designer Carrie Newman’s day starts out perfectly. For their sixth anniversary, her boyfriend, Roger, gives her diamond earrings, but the sparkle is lost later that same day when she catches him in the act with another woman. Heartbroken and in disarray, Carrie chooses to leave the past behind, possibly forever. She lands in ritzy Palm Beach, Florida where a new job and new client leave her wondering if THE RIGHT DESIGN for her life has finally been found.

Excerpt:

To celebrate, Mary Ann took her to lunch and they toasted Carrie’s nomination with a glass of champagne. Only one glass wouldn’t hurt, she thought. Besides, if she was going to go through with what she’d planned for Roger, the liquid courage would be helpful.

After lunch, Mary Ann signaled for the check. “So,” she started, reaching into her purse. “Do you think Roger’s going to propose tonight?”

Nearly choking on her last bit of champagne, Carrie shook her head. “Well, we’ve talked about it and I wish he would, but we’ve been together so long, I feel married to him already. I don’t need a piece of paper to make it official.” She traced the outline of her new earrings with the tips of her fingers. “Besides, I already have my diamonds.”

Mary Ann shook her head and laughed as she signed the check. “You’re more patient than I’d be. That’s why two years after George and I had started dating, I told him it was now or never.” She looked at the simple gold band on her left hand. “And we’ve been together for over twenty years now.” Taking a sip of her drink, she continued. “Roger really must think you’re a saint. Most women would push the marriage topic until he put a ring on that bare finger, especially since you two have been together for so long. He’s a very handsome man, Carrie.”

“Believe me, I know.” Carrie thought back to how sexy he’d looked when they’d made love the night before. She loved how Roger’s handsome body hovered over hers in the dim light, how his face had lit up as he pleasured her.

“Does he know how good his life is?” Mary Ann stood up and Carrie followed. “Most men would kill for that kind of life.”

“Oh, Roger knows,” she giggled. “Believe me, he knows.”

When they went back to the office, Carrie started counting down the two hours she had left when her office phone rang and Roger’s name flashed on the screen.

“Hey, handsome.”

“How’s my beautiful girl?”

“Great, but busy as ever. Oh, and I have some wonderful news.” She twisted the phone cord, thinking of all the surprises that she had in store for Roger.

“Do you care to share?”

“I want to tell you in person.”

“Okay, sounds good. Hey, is there a chance of you getting off early? I need to see you.”

“I’m sorry, love, I’m so busy.” She tried to make her voice sound tense and overwhelmed.

All Roger said was, “Okay,” his voice sounding low and let down.

“Babe, like I told you this morning, I promise I’ll make it up to you.”

“Okay,” he repeated. “Don’t forget that we have seven o’clock dinner reservations at Patetico’s.”

“I can’t wait. I’ll meet you home at six-thirty?”

“See you then.”

“Roger, I love you.”

“I love you more,” he said, and then hung up.

When four o’clock came around, Carrie was out the door and headed to Neiman’s to pick up the necessities. She’d finally got enough guts to make one of Roger’s fantasies come true—for her to seduce him wearing nothing but heels, a negligee, and a trench coat. This, by far, wasn’t high on her fantasy list, but since she’d had a glass of champagne at lunch, she felt more relaxed with the idea. In the lingerie department, she tried on four negligees. They all fit nicely against the toned body she’d worked hard for. Carrie settled for a black baby doll gown made of silk, edged with lace.

Negligee, check.

In the jacket department of the store, Carrie picked a bright red trench coat that reminded her of the movie Dick Tracy.

Trench coat, check.

She’d wear the same sexy Alexander McQueens she had on, so she didn’t bother shopping for shoes.

Heels, check.

Now that Carrie was prepared, she drove home to set the mood for Roger’s arrival. She’d have candles, champagne, and strawberries with whipped cream (which she had already bought and hidden outside in their garage refrigerator) waiting for him for when he walked through the door. Carrie hadn’t forgotten even the smallest detail in creating the perfect evening and couldn’t wait to see Roger’s face when he saw that his fantasy had become a reality.

As she made her way down their street, Carrie blinked twice, confused and a little disappointed to see Roger’s car already in the driveway. She looked at the clock on her dashboard, noticing that he wasn’t due home yet.

Quick, think of something, she thought, turning off the car, contemplating what to do. She glanced down the left side of the street and the right, then into the rear view mirror. When all was clear, Carrie quickly took off her clothes, including her red lace thong, slipped on the negligee, and then the coat. She applied lip-gloss and pinched her cheeks, giving herself a hint of more color. After a deep breath, Carrie felt ready. It was show time.

She got out of the car and didn’t bother to lock it, afraid her car alarm signal would ruin the surprise. Carrie hurried up the steps, slipped her key in the door, and twisted the knob. When she pushed the door open, her heart raced with anxiety and excitement, until she heard moans coming from inside the house.

Carrie stopped in the doorway of the kitchen, not believing what she saw. Roger had a redheaded woman bent over the island in their kitchen and was screwing her from behind. As she watched Roger and the other woman together, her blood turned cold and her mouth went dry. She stood frozen with rage and anger, not knowing what to do. Her keys left her hand and clashed loudly, hitting the marble floor. Instantly, Roger and the woman stopped in their tracks and looked at Carrie.

“Carrie!” Roger yelped in shock as his eyes oozed with guilt. Pulling out of the other woman like he was on fire, he reached for his jeans that lay carelessly on their wooden table and struggled to put them on. “Wh-what are you doing here?”

Carrie glared at him, sending daggers into his eyes. Trying to ignore the other woman who stood against their countertop with crossed legs and hands folded over her breasts, Carrie began yelling at Roger as she forced herself not to cry. “What am I doing here? This is my home, too! But if you must know, I came here to surprise you.”

He let out a heavy sigh and closed his eyes. Moments later, he walked closer to Carrie and tried to reach for her hand, but she jumped. “This not what you think it is.”

“Don’t you dare touch me.” Carrie cocked her head toward him and placed her hands on her hips, in disbelief. “Explain this, Roger. Who the hell is that tart, and why is she still here?” Carrie narrowed her eyes at the woman.

“I’m not a tart,” the young coquette (who looked barely twenty) chimed in with a Spanish accent.

“Roger, you’d better start talking!” Above feeling angry and hurt, her heart raced, and she tried to swallow the bile that had risen from her stomach. She wanted answers and wanted them now.

Instead of saying or doing anything, Roger stood there with his head hung down and tail between his legs, looking like his body had been caught in another woman’s cookie jar. Finally, his mouth opened but nothing came out.

“You have nothing to say? I gave you everything you ever wanted, served to you on a silver platter. I was there for you when your parents died. I stood by your side when your siblings didn’t give a damn during your cancer scare.” She took a breath while tears began to cloud her eyes. She waited for any sign of explanation, but he had none. “Happy freakin’ anniversary, Roger.” Carrie picked up her keys and ran out of their house without taking anything, sickened that the past six years had been nothing but a lie.

The Shy Author

October 17, 2013 9 Comments

Hello, family, friends and followers!

This blog post has been in my mind for quite a while now, so I thought now is the perfect time! Last night was wonderful! My amazing husband created my author domain name, which means I will soon have an author page. (I hope you all follow me over there when it’s finished ;)) Also, last night I received an email from my cover designer. She sent me the final cover draft for “The Right Design”! It’s beautiful and I can’t stop staring at it! While the book isn’t finished being edited yet, it’s nice to know that part of the self-publishing process is almost over! All that’s left for me to do is write a short bio and submit a picture. Whew! **Oh, and today, with the lovely help of two awesome ladies, the blurb is completed!

Okay, to the main point of this blog post…A couple of days ago I stumbled upon a wonderful 3-month plan from 30 Day Books. Here is a link to Before You Publish Your eBook: A 3-Month Checklist! Since I’m publishing in January, this list is SO helpful. Out of the 14 items 3 months away from publishing, I have completed 6. As for as the things that need to be completed 2 months out, that’s where part of me wants to curl up in a ball and hide from the world. You see, I’m a shy person (though, some claim that not to be true). Sending emails about having people share the blurb and/or cover reveal and/or read and review my book, is making me panic. On a side note, which I find interesting, I’m not afraid of bad reviews! I’m afraid of asking, “Hey! I’m a new author and I wrote this book, The Right Design. Will you read it and post the blurb, the cover, and write a review on your blog, then share it on Amazon, B&N, and Goodreads?” What’s the worst that could happen? That they’ll say no. That’s not bad at all right, you just have to keep trying…well, in this case, I have to keep trying. This is where hiring someone  to ask those things for me would come in handy, but when I made the decision to self-publish, this was part of it and I’m not backing down.

Self-publishing is a business and if you want to be serious about your work by getting you and your books acknowledged, then you have to keep on, keepin’ on! My question for you is, if you’re a shy, self-published author, what works for you to get your book out there? Over time, does it get easier?

Until next time…this is Isabella Louise Anderson, wishing you all a great day and hoping you’ll read my book! 😉

Explaining the New Look on Chick Lit Goddess..and Exciting Updates!

September 21, 2013 5 Comments

Hello, Family, Friends and Followers!

Before I explain why Chick Lit Goddess has a new look, let me share two exciting news!

  • The anthology, in which my short story is part of, has a name! It is: Merry & Bright! Isn’t that cute? Later this week, I will be sharing a cover reveal for it later next week and have to say that I love it! I’m in the final stage of looking it over once more, before I send it to the editor next week! Yay!
  • As for my book, The Right Design, I’m working with an amazing woman who’s doing my cover art for the book. On Monday morning, I received several concepts and loved them all in their own way, but a certain three or four stick out to me. My husband could see that I’m weighing my options, so he taped them to the refrigerator. Now each time I’m in the kitchen, I find myself staring at them. Hopefully, I will have a cover to share with you in the upcoming weeks! P.S. Scarlett Rugers, I can’t thank you enough! For those of you who are wondering when it’s going to be published, I’m working on yet another round of edits and plan on publishing it in January! Yes, that’s only months away, and I’m so excited! (I would have it published in December, but why not start the year off the right way?) 😉

Now, back to explaining the Chick Lit Goddess change facelift…Since I will be a published author soon, I’ve decided to start using this site as a feature page for writers and authors. Whether it’s an interview with, and a guest post by the author, or sharing blurbs, chapter teases, and cover reveals, this is where all that will be shared. In the next few weeks, I will be working on getting my author website set up, and of course, I’ll share it with you all! 🙂

Kind of an Announcement: It’s Time for Me to Move Forward…

June 27, 2013 49 Comments

It’s been a long time coming that I share this blog post with you, my devoted readers, but I’m excited to share this with you.  A lot has gone on since November, and posted this, which I titled “Why I’ve Decided To Self-Publish”.

There is nothing I want more than to be an author.  It’s important to me because while I’m interested in a lot of other things, writing is the one thing I see myself doing for the rest of my life.  It’s the only thing I want to do.

Here’s what I have done to achieve the goals of being an author:

  • Written a book, (2 of them, actually)
  • Worked with 2 AMAZING editors
  • Have given my second book, THE RIGHT DESIGN, to beta readers — (you know who you three are and I love y’all!)
  • And have had  TRD professionally critiqued by two brilliant ladies — (you two ladies are pure gems!)
  • **Currently, I’m still trying to fine-tune my first MS, REDEFINED DREAMS

As you can see, I’m missing the main part of becoming an author…BEING PUBLISHED!  With the love and support of my family they encouraged me to give the traditional route a try first, so I did.  I have sent queries and chapters of my MS to several publishing companies, but have had, so far, been rejected six times.  I’m okay with being rejected, after all, it’s part of the business.  At first, I kept my rejection to myself (and still haven’t told most people) because I really didn’t know how to feel about it, but as each rejection came my way it led me to think more seriously about the modern way about being published, which is to self-publish.  I’m proud of myself for even trying because sending querying my MS was a huge step for a shy woman like me.

Years have passed since I’ve written my two books and I have a lot of ideas in mind, so in order to write them and continue on as an author, here’s what I need a plan, so here’s the announcement: I will be self-publishing THE RIGHT DESIGN.  If you read my blog post that I linked above, then you know a few reason why I’m looking forward to taking on this challenge (from writer to author).

Whew!  It feels so good to share the adventure and path I’ll be taking!  Out with the stress of waiting and rejection, and bring on the stress of a self-published author – ;)!

Here’s what I’ll be working on now, along with the fine-tuning I mentioned above:

  • Looking through beta readers advice and comments
  • Writing yet another draft of TRD, thanks to the help of my critique ladies
  • Reading “The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing“!

The Next Big Thing: Authors Tagging Authors!

October 19, 2012 18 Comments

Happy Friday, everyone!  Whew!  It’s been a long time since I’ve really blogged and I’ve missed it, and my followers!  Thank you for being patient with me the last few weeks, but it’s been quite a busy time in my work and personal life.  The good thing is that my office is almost finished, so I’ll be a lot more focused hopefully by the end of this month, (YAY!).

And now for something exciting…

Last Friday I was tagged by Jackie Bouchard of Pooch Smooches as part of a blog going around, called “The Next Big Thing.”  It was a pleasure being tagged along with other wonderful authors.  Below are the questions that are given to each other, along with my answers.  While some of them were difficult to answer because I’m (very) shy and don’t like to talk about myself or my books, I had wonderful advice given to me by the ladies of a Facebook group that I started, Chick Lit Goddesses.  We’d love to have you!

What is the working title of your book?  Right now I’m working on edits for my books, “Redefined Dreams” and “The Right Design.”

Where did the idea come from for the book?  I began writing “Redefined Dreams” while taking a creative writing class at Gotham Writers’ Workshop.  One assignment was to start a story with “The window…”  I had no direction at first for it, but I was a newlywed and still had wedding stuff on my mind, so the beginning story was easy, but then the characters started to “speak” to me and soon my characters came to life, as well as a story!

“The Right Design,” it was the beginning of October when I decided that I would participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).  When I sat down to write this book on that first day of November, I knew I wanted my Heroine to be very different from the MC in my first book, but had no clue whatsoever what this book would be about, but that changed very quickly.  I wrote this book as if I were the main character, so I guess you could say that I wrote the book about a life I have/had/wish I had and in some ways, want.  For those of you that know me, I bet you’d be surprised, though only three people have read this book, (one of my closest male friends, my mom and my editor)!

What genre does your book fall under?  Both of my books are a mix of Chick Lit/Romance

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?  I love this question!  My dream is to write a book and have it turned into a movie, even if it’s on Lifetime, (only without Leann Rimes and Eddie Cibrian — if you don’t know the story, HERE is a summary).  For “Redefined Dreams,” I’d have to say that Ashley Williams or Gennifer Goodwin would play Lucy, Eric Dane would play Jackson, and Nathan would played by Channing Tatum.  For “The Right Design,” I would have Katherine Heigl play Carrie, Sandra Bullock to play Sara, Harry Connic Jr. would play Roger, and either Matt Bomer or Colin Egglesfield would play Brad.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?  What a great question!  “Redefined Dreams” — Have you ever been engaged to a man who turns out to be gay, but you get over it by falling in love with your ex-wedding coordinator’s son, only to end up pregnant with his baby?  “The Right Design” — What’s a better way to get over your cheating ex-boyfrind than to move to new city, only to be tempted by your client and not able to act on it because of the rules you’ve set for yourself, until he makes the first move?

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?  I’m still deciding.  There are both positives and negatives about each choice, but there is one I’m leaning towards and that’s to self-publish!

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?  “Redefined Dreams” took me a full year, March of 2010 to March of 2011.  “The Right Design” took me 30 days in November of 2011!  (Participating in NaNoWriMo was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made).

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?  I’d love for my books to be compared to Emily Giffin’s “Something Blue” and “Something Borrowed.”  Those books are why I wanted to be an author in the first place.  She’s an inspiration!  I think that Emily is the most talented and beloved author in the Chick Lit genre.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?  Like I mentioned before, Emily Giffin is an inspiration, but my husband inspired me write books one and two.  He’s a constant motivator and pushes me to achieve what I think I can’t do, but knows I can.  (Thank you, hubby!)

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?  My books aren’t just to entertain, but I want my readers to feel like they can relate to my main Heroine and/or the struggle she’s in.  While I write for pleasure, I love to write for others who can finish my book and say, “Wow, that was great,” and the character and/or story sticks with them.

I was only supposed to tag 5, but I have so many awesome author friends that I wanted to include, so I tagged 6.  Next Friday, the 26th, they will have answered the questions and tagged  more authors, and so on.  Be sure to check stay tuned and see who they tag!

I’ve Been Busy…

June 5, 2012 Leave a Comment

Last night was my first post in a long time!  Whew!  It’s been a busy few weeks since I’ve blogged, but it’s all been for a good reason!  With editing books one and two, hosting guests, reading for tours and writing my contribution articles for GHG, life gets busy.  Add a loving husband and very needy cat to the mix and it’s even more hectic (but only some of the time).

Here’s a small summary of in detail what’s been going on…

–Editing: I’m still in the process of editing my first and second book.  Book one, Redefined Dreams, needed A LOT of work, but I’m seeming a glimmer of light.  With my other book, The Right Design, I just finished the first quick run through, but now it’s time to focus on making this what I want it to be!

–Guests: I’ve had the pleasure of having Guests stop by Chick Lit Goddess, (click HERE to see all their posts).  Like I’ve mentioned before, all of them inspire me.

–Reading and Tours: When I was asked to take part in my first Chick Lit Plus Blog Tour, I jumped at the chance. I’ve been a huge fan of CLP for quite long time, and I love Samantha — she’s an awesome woman!  If you ever want to take part of a tour, I recommend it!  (Let me know if y’all have any questions if you’re interested in more information on these tours).

–Contributions for GHG: If you’ve not checked out my contributing articles at Good Humor Girl, come check it out!  You won’t want to miss out!

Why Letting Your Friends Read Your Work Is A Good Thing!

March 1, 2012 8 Comments

When I started taking classes at Gotham Writers’ Workshop I was a little worried about sharing my work with my fellow classmates, but I quickly overcame those nerves and insecurities and learned to listen to what they had to say.  Whether their critique were comments about my storyline, helping me keep a better timeline of events, or anything else, I welcomed their opinions.

I recently gave my second book, The Right Design, to a close friend to read.  I was a little worried about doing so, not because of what I thought he might think, but because it was my baby, my NaNoWriMo baby.  I still haven’t let go of the storyline, nor have I gone a day without thinking about my beloved characters.  Come to find out, my friend really enjoyed the story.  He helped me see where I needed some help and what parts he liked.  This helped me so much, and I’m beginning to take notes for the 2nd draft – yea!

Many writers are like me, afraid to share their work, but trust me, you’ll want to show you work to friends because it might help you in the long run.  It’s also okay to learn to take criticism.  Writers need it because it’s the only way that our writing gets better.

Have you ever showed a friend your MS?  If so, what was your experience in doing so?  Were you happy you did it?  I’d love to hear all about it.  (You can even vent if you want to!)

The Right Design

February 13, 2012 4 Comments

I’m sorry I’m just now getting to post this, but ti’s been a busy few days!  Anyway, like I promised last week, here are the details of my second book, The Right Design!  When I was writing this book, I didn’t tell anyone what it was about because it was my baby and until it was finished, I wanted the ideas to come from me and only me – I didn’t want to be persuaded by anyone.  Now that I’ve finally named my book, I’m excited to share what it’s about, so here goes:

The Right Design

It’s interior designer Carrie Newman’s six year anniversary with her boyfriend, Roger.  Before leaving for work that morning, he gives her a little blue box, but when Carrie opens it up, it’s not what she thinks (and hopes) that it would be.  Later thad day when she comes home early to prepare a surprise for him, she’s shocked to find him in a very erotic position with another woman on their kitchen counter.  Devistated and heartbroken, Carrie ends their relationship and moves in with her sister and brother in-law, Sara and Sean.  It’s not too soon after that does Sara announce that she’s pregnant, and Carrie thinks it’s time to get her life back on track, so she makes an announcement of her own – she’s moving to Florida!

Carrie finds herself living a whole new life, working at another highly established interior decorating firm.  Her first job since moving to Florida is to update Brad Larson’s mansion.  There is instant attraction between them, but Carrie is a firm believer of not mixing business with pleasure, but Brad does everything he can to change her mind.  After fighting her feelings, Carrie finally surrenders and allows herself to feel something for him, but the morning after they sleep together the first time, Brad walks in on Carrie at her office and catches Roger and her in a kiss.

…and cut!

That’s all you get to know until the book’s published!

Do you like the storyline?  Who do you think Carrie will end up with, or will she forget them both and move on to someone new?
