BOOK REVIEW: “The Last Dance”

March 27, 2019 1 Comment

“The Last Dance” by Aimee Brown

Blurb:

Can you truly forgive and forget?

Ambri and Henry have been best friends forever. They’ve been through the highs and lows of life with each other by their sides. The worst? When Henry’s wife, and Ambri’s sister, died. Together, they can face it all. Until one night destroys everything.

Two years after he stepped out of it Henry walks back into Ambri’s life and she’s more than a little shocked. But as old friends fall into even older habits they need to decide whether they can forget the past and embrace their future.

My Review: After reading Aimee Brown’s first book, “The Lucky Dress,” I knew I would love “The Last Dance,” so when I was given the chance to receive an ARC I jumped at the chance.

It’s known that I’m a huge fan of friends-to-lovers romances, and this book did not disappoint. Right from the start, it was easy to see the connection Ambri and Henry shared, even with the one person who still stands between them–someone they both loved.

There were parts that were heartbreaking and made me cry, the adorable banter that made me chuckle, and the ending was exactly as I hoped it would–and in a cute way, too, (sorry, no spoilers).

As for Aimee’s writing, like with her first book, not only was I instantly drawn to the characters, but this story, too. Her books will make you lose track of time, and the characters will become your friends who you don’t want to stop spending time with.

If you’re looking for a sweet summer read, one that will give you all the feels of finally taking that leap with the one who’s been by your side the whole time, then this is the book for you.

I give “The Last Dance” 5 stars!

Still recovering from an amazing-turned-terrible date, Hilary Brandt lives each day as best she can with her successful event planning career, flamboyant assistant, escape-artist cat, and eccentric roommate. Most events run smoothly for Hilary, but occasionally, one goes awry and a client turns…evil. Relieved that her boss knows that type of client, Hilary quickly jumps into her next event, planning two parties for a very handsome executive. When elections for condo board president come around, Hilary lets her friends and neighbors convince her to run against the by-the-letter, long-sitting president — also known as Hilary’s number one personal critic. As the election campaigns launch, the romance-that-almost-was reappears, a coworker tries to steal a client, and her opponent starts to fight dirty. Hilary quickly realizes she may just be in over her head, but can she fight fire with fire? Stumble through the awkward encounters with the hot neighbor or swoony client? Fight for a new event when the election begins to meddle with her career? Or is the chaos just too much?

Excerpt:

“I don’t want lilies. I don’t want roses. I want orchids and saffron crocus!”

What the bloody hell is a saffron crocus?

Sarah Graham blinks at me, her thin blonde eyebrows raising high over her green almond-shaped eyes. In her left hand is a long, light-blue lily that she swings violently before me. “Hello! Did you hear me?”

“Right, yes.” I nod and quickly glance down at my cell phone. “But see… The thing is… You requested lilies and roses two months ago and again last week when Eli emailed to confirm—”

Towering over me in her six-inch pink heels, she puts a boney finger up in my face. “Am I not allowed to change my mind? Is that what you are telling me? Isn’t changing my mind one of my civil rights?”

The thing with these types of clients is, well, they do anything they can at the last minute to get a discount. And I mean anything. I once had a client tell me they found out they were allergic to shrimp the day before their anniversary event in which they had hired a caterer who specializes in seafood. Sydney, my boss, approved the discount, and at the event, I found the client downing shrimp cocktail after shrimp cocktail.

Sarah sighs and slumps before me. “Is it that hard to ask for the flowers I want? Is it that difficult of a task for an event planner? I mean, you’re acting as if I’m asking for a golden egg.”

Why do I always get stuck with these clients? Oh, that’s right. Because they ended up giving Sydney too many migraines so she took a seat back from planning. Now they come my way.

“Orchids and saffron crocus,” Sarah repeats, locking eyes with me again. “Can you do it, or do I have to call another planner?”

I can hear Eli, my assistant and junior planner, in my head saying over and over again, Don’t be a pushover. Don’t be a pushover.

I force a smile onto my lips. “Ms. Graham, we are six hours away from your husband’s birthday party. The decorations are on their way, and so are the ice sculptures. I doubt any event planner will come in blindly to finish the job.”

“Are you challenging me?” She glares down at me. “Because I’ll have you know that—”

“I’m not challenging you,” I say quickly. “I’m simply stating the facts—”

“Well, this is me stating the facts. I want orchids and saffrons,” Sarah snaps, adjusting her posture. “Make. It. Happen.”

banner-1.jpg

Let your homeless best friend stay with you, he said. Being roommates will be fun, he said. It’s only temporary, he said.

He never said I’d fall for him.

The Roommate Agreement, all-new hilarious and romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is available now!

ROOMMATEAGREEMENT-coverdraft1.jpg

You know what isn’t ‘temporary?’ The endless stream of dirty socks in my bathroom and empty food packets under the sofa—and don’t even get me started on the hot guys who take over my living room every Sunday to watch sports.

I can’t take anymore.

So I propose a roommate agreement. One that will bring peace and order back to my life, complete with rules that might just stop my newfound crush on my best friend in its tracks.

After all, there’s only so many times you can see your best friend naked before you start to lose your mind.

Rules. They’re meant to be broken… Aren’t they?

Chick Lit Goddess’s Five Favorite Reads of 2018!

December 29, 2018 2 Comments

I can’t believe that 2019 will be here in only a couple of days! Being that I was quite busy writing, I was picky about the books I read this year, and I’m happy to say that a lot of them will stick with me.

In no particular order, here are my top reads of 2018:

“Little Gray Dress” by Aimee Brown

“Bridal Girl” by Meredith Schorr

“Go On, Girl,” by Hilary Grossman

“Tequila Tequila” by Emma Hart

“Taking Her Turn” by “Alexa Riley

What were your favorite reads of the year? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Until next year, my friends, this is Isabella Louise Anderson, and I wish you all the best in 2019!

BOOK REVIEW: “Little Gray Dress”

December 27, 2018 3 Comments

Little Gray Dress by Aimee Brown

Blurb: Emi Harrison has avoided her ex-fiance, Jack Cabot, for nearly two years. Her twin brother Evan’s wedding is about to end that streak. From bad bridesmaids’ dresses, a hyperactive sister-in-law, a mean girl with even meaner secrets, and too much to drink, nothing seems to go right for Emi, except when she’s wearing her little gray dress.

When she speed-walks into Liam Jaxon’s bar, things get more complicated. He’s gorgeous, southern, and has no past with Emi. He may be exactly what she needs to prove for the last time that she doesn’t need or want Jack!

Her favorite little gray dress has made an appearance at nearly every major event in Emi’s adult life. Will it make another grand appearance when she least expects it?

My Review: In need of something to read to take my mind off the stomach bug I had, I decided to download this book that had been on my iPad for a very long time. Not only was the timing right, but it was also just what my heart needed at the end of the year. My review of this sweet, heartfelt, funny, and delightful read was planned to be shared last week, but writing it was something I struggled with–and, no, it wasn’t because of the holidays. It was merely because I was found it hard to find the right words on how to convey my thoughts about this book.

It’s hard to believe Little Gray Dress was Aimee Brown’s debut novel. The writing was superb; the storyline was brilliant (even the surprising twists), and while I’m not one who rereads books, I could easily read this one and love it–if not more–again.

Every chick lit, contemporary romance, and women’s fiction fan needs to read this book. Not only will it make you hold your breath at some scenes, love to hate a specific character until the end (no spoilers), question where the story was going, make you crave more from one particular Hero-like character (no spoilers on this one either), it most-likely will make you cry ugly tears at the end, which I absolutely loved!

I give “Little Gray Dress” 5 stars…If I could give it 10, I would!

**Note: Little Gray Dress has been republished with a new publisher, new title, and new cover as “THE LUCKY DRESS.” Also, please note that Little Gray Dress is only now available in audiobook.

BOOK REVIEW: “Tequila Tequila”

December 19, 2018 1 Comment

Tequila Tequila by Emma Hart

Blurb:

TEQUILA + YOUR BEST FRIEND + YOUR BEDROOM = UM. WHOOPSIE?

Don’t sleep with your best friend.
Take it from me. I did it. And it was awful.
I-wish-the-tequila-made-me-forget kind of bad.
The problem is, Luke has forgotten. He swears that he can’t remember a thing about that night beyond the trays of tequila shots being set on the tables.
Except I can’t forget. I can’t forget how good his hands felt until I fell over and hit my hip on the dresser, and I sure as hell can’t forget the entire two minutes of tap-tap-squirt.
Awkward. Embarrassing. And the new subject of a couple of dirty lucid dreams.
But I have no intention of telling him what we did. Nothing good comes from telling your best friend he’s the worst guy you’ve ever slept with.
Which makes the tequila on my birthday a very, very bad idea…

My Review: I’ve been in a reading slump lately, so as a fan of friends-to-lovers books and being the tequila lover that I am, I thought picking up this book would be a fun read…and it did not disappoint.

Right from the start, Aspen and Luke not only have chemistry in their friendship but in a romantic way, too. Throughout the book, it was fun to see how both of them handled knowing what the other thought they didn’t. Though, when the secret came out, I was relieved that it didn’t ruin anything (no spoilers). At times, their quirky banter reminded me of an old married couple, especially when dealing with Luke’s large family being part of the story, especially Luke’s grandmother.

“Tequila Tequila” was my first book by Emma Hart, and it’s not going to be my last, (I’m currently reading her other book, “Best Served Cold”). If you want a quick and cute friends-to-lovers read, then I would recommend this book to you. (It would be a great read over the holiday season, too!)

I give “Tequila Tequila” 4.5 stars!

Catastrophe Queen by Emma Hart

Blurb:

One hot mess. One hot boss. One too many hot encounters….

Catastrophe Queen, an all-new hilarious office romantic comedy from New York Timesbestselling author Emma Hart is coming January 29th!

It’s not you. It’s me.

No, seriously. It is me. Not only does my name literally mean “unfortunate,” but that’s the story of my life.

Everything I touch turns to cr*p. An apartment fire—that I swear I was not responsible for—means I’m living back at home with my s*x-mad parents. Yay, me!

Which is why I need my new job as personal assistant to Cameron Reid to get back on my feet. Three months in this job and I can move back out and, hopefully, remember to turn off my flat iron once in a while.

Ahem.

On paper, my job is easy. Make coffee. Book appointments. Keep everything in order.

Until I walk in on my boss, half-naked, wearing nothing but the kind of tiny white towel that dreams are made of.

Now, nothing is easy—except our mutual attraction. But he’s my boss, and you know what they say about mixing work and pleasure: unless you do p*rn, it’s just not worth it.

Or is it?

BOOK REVIEW: “Taking Her Turn”

November 26, 2018 1 Comment

“Taking Her Turn” by Alexa Riley

Blurb: Kingsley and Mina are newlyweds and everything in their life is perfect. Everything except one little thing.

Kingsley loves his wife so much that it drives him crazy. He’s too big, too strong, too obsessed with her. So much so that he has to hold back. He ties her down to keep himself in control and won’t allow himself to let go.

Mina loves her husband, but she knows he’s keeping part of him away from her. He’s broken his tightly held control only once and it was the best night of her life. Now she’s got a plan be the one on top, and there’s nothing he can do about it.

Warning: Find out what happens when an alpha unleashes a shot of pure, hot dominance. Spoiler alert…it’s filthy.

My Review: I’ve been in a reading drought, so what better way to pick it back up by reading something a little steamy?

Right from the start, I was drawn to Kingsley and Mina, mainly because they’re married, which not only made the story even better, it helped to understand them and their desire for one another.

If you’re looking for a short and steamy read (perhaps during your lunch hour or on a lazy weekend), I recommend this book. It was a H.O.T. one! 🙂

I give “Taking Her Turn” 5 stars!
